So, according to here and here, Season One has a release date of the 23rd of July. And it's for pre-order here for £50.99.

Pretty cool if true... about 2 months earlier than we expected. Though, in US dollars that's $80.87. Still, that's just a pre-order price. Let's hope. ;)

I really hope that they will enlargen the language options for audio AND subtitles, especially in the European release. However, I get the feeling that they will not do much about, having seen "the next level" which was a big disappointment in this regard. I will most likely just stick to the DVD sets I already own. Btw, for the same reason I did not buy the remastered TOS seasons.

Would you mind sharing your reason for this preference? You seem to have little to no trouble with the English language. Wouldn't you prefer to watch the show in the language it was originally performed? Also, remember, the more language options they add, the more they have to lower the video bitrate in order to fit everything on the discs. There are 23 official languages of the European Union. Which ones should stay and which ones should go... and how far are you willing to lower the video quality to accomplish this?

Subtitles, on the other hand, wouldn't use up much space at all, so I can't argue with you there.

First of all, thanks for flattering me for my English skills. ;)

You are right, it is absolutely the best experience to watch (any) series with the original language it was performed in. This is what I do in 90% of case that I watch it for the very first time (and 99% of them is American English). However, I like Star Trek very much which is, besides very few others (e.g. Friends), my favarorite show. So after it watching it several times in English it is a welcome change to watch it in other languages, which I did in Spanish, Italian and French. Funnily enough I enjoy it the less in my mother tongue which is German. So I intent to repeately watching Star Trek until the end of my days and I hope they will give me the opportunity to watch in other monguages at well.

For me, it is a very useful tool to work on my language skills, the audio to practice listening, the subtitles to memorize vocabulary etc. In fact, I try to learn (Brazilian) Portuguese right now, and this is missing on my DVD sets (not even subtitles, they are only available for TOS).
I would enjoy to have besides English, French, Spanish, Italian and German audio, also Portugues, Russian, Turkish or any other European language (e.g. Czech, Polish, Dutch) however, some might not have been dubbed in the past, so they would/could not put it there. If they really put Japanese there as in the "Next level" it will be very welcome by me as would be e.g. Chinese, Arab or Thai which probably have no existing dubbing either, all with the corresponding subtitles too.

I would really enjoy to have a version with virtually all the existing dubbings in the world, for me much more useful than for instance the commentary audio track or other bonus features. Even if they would need reduce the video bit rate a bit, although a stereo or even mono sound track would not ask for much space.

I have bought and watched the next level, and the improvement of the image is not sufficient for me for buying the Blu-ray while I posses the DVD sets of all TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY. Maybe my TV is too small with 32" to have the best impact.

Maybe my expectations are a bit special and not for everyone, but speaking various languages is an important tool for me and other (especially in Europe) in this modern world with all the international connections to be developped/maintained. I still hope to get something out of the blu-ray sets, but, probably, I will be disappointed and not buying them.

That's really cool that you understand that many languages and it's great that you want to practice them more, but what you're suggesting is adding 14 additional Dolby Digital 2.0 foreign language tracks at 224kbps. That's nearly 1GB more data per episode... and on a disc containing as many as 5 episodes, that's just about 5GB of space needed just for those tracks.

So CBS would have to either reduce the video bitrate of each episode from an average of 17Mbps* to <15Mbps... or alternatively, reduce the number of episodes per disc, which would increase the disc count of the sets and therefore the price.

I have no problem with that, as long as they do it in Region B. Region A should stay with English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese.

* On the Next Level disc, which has one double length episode and two standard length (equivalent of 4 episodes), the bitrate is 22Mbps on average. One reason they look really good.

Awesome news - and much sooner than we expected. Hopefully prices from Amazon and Play and the like will be even less than Sainsburys (as they tend to be at a higher price point normally anyway). Would be great if we could pick this up for around the £45 mark!

Don't forget there was that voucher with the taster disc, so that would be a fiver off to start with.

£2 an episode's a pretty good price anyway.

I didn't get a voucher when I bought the NoAm version from Amazon. Maybe it was just a UK thing?

Okay, so the price is pretty much as expected. The TOS blu-rays are still 50 pounds to this day. It's still on the high end though. HBO BD releases go for around 30 pounds (even Game of Thrones, which cost 60 million dollars to make). Not to mention that the TNG DVD sets are now sold for around 11 pounds. It's a first day buy for me, but I'll be shopping around for the lowest price.

If you check out Robert Meyer Burnett's twitter feed (@BurnettRM) he's been posting some photos from the TNG edit bay over the last few weeks. Here's a look at the new crystalline entity from Datalore:

^ Wow, pretty nice. Especially when I compare it to the original shot at Trekcore.

It does look pretty good in comparison. Here's the original for everyone else:

Screwed at £60 per season for the DVDs back in the day.

And now CBS are trying to screw me again for £51 per season for exactly the same episodes on Blu-ray.

I'll wait 18 months, thank you. The Trek movies 1-10 Blu-ray boxset was £120 for ages before going down to £75 a couple of years ago. That's still stupidly expensive when you consider the complete Bond Blu-ray set (22 discs) is on pre order for £89.99. These will drop in price. Don't let CBS/Paramount screw us all over again. In two/three years time, these sets will be £20 each.

Say no to being ripped off.

Two things to consider:

1.) This is one retailer's pre-order price three and a half months out. It may go down. They may also be a terrible place to buy from generally, for all I know.

2.) Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 Blu-ray came out three years ago this month and it is currently £44.89/$56.99 -- nowhere near £20/$32.

True, but the complete TOS on Blu-ray is £100. (£33 and a sparrow's fart per season). OK, so £20 maybe a little optimistic, but we'll see £30 in fairly decent time. Amazon had the Alien Anthology on Blu-ray for under £10 last week. It was about £35 when it came out last year.

We're in hard times at the moment, stuff isn't selling, and retailers are desperate.

They could have screwed us a LOT more if they wanted to. This price actually seems pretty reasonable considering all the hard work that was clearly put into it. And compared to the price of the original sets.

But if you want to wait for a lower price, so be it. There's no one out there saying you can't.

I averaged paying about $62 a season for TOS on blu-ray. This looks like it'll be a similar price point. :techman:

Not particularly good comparisons. HBO only does 10-episode seasons of things like GoT, compared to 24-26 for TNG. Plus GoT was made for High-Def and needed no conversion (if anything they probably had to do some sort of rendering for the DVD version). And of course DVD sets are going to be cheap because they're getting rid of DVDs.

I've been seeing quite a bit of harping over of the cost of the thing, but I don't see the problem. If people all decide to not buy it at that price, then don't hold your breath to ever see the other seasons released. And the "double-dipping" argument doesn't make sense because that's like someone whining that they have to buy the DVD releases after spending all that money on videotapes. It's a different format.

Just as an aside, I understand that for a lot of folks money is tight, whether in the US or the UK. I do find it weird that sometimes (and no I'm not claiming that the "sometimes" includes any discussions on Trek BBS) you hear folks harp about the cost of Blu-rays or DVDs, and the next thing you hear they're shelling out $60 on a PS3 game (Mass Effect 3 is a great example; I'm buying mine in 6 months when it's knocked down to $20 at Walmart) or hundreds on the latest iPad without batting an eyelash.

One of the weirdest knocks I read is over on another forum where someone says TNG shouldn't cost so much apparently based on the criteria that it is an old show. Yeah, so? It's Star Trek we're talking about, not My Living Doll! ;)

Gods, £50 is a *bit* more than I thought, but its certainly not terrible. Not by a long shot. And besides, knowing the UK supermarket competitivity, you can bet there'll be some form of a price war on it, with places like Tesco, ASDA and Morrisons vying to be the cheapest. I'm not saying we'll see it thrown away for £30, but we'll at least get down to £40-£45 before launch I reckon.

Hell, I'll be buying it.
