How well do you think they're going to be able to re-create the Enterprise-Nil bridge from TOS in "Relics"? In that episode only a portion of it was built as a physical set the rest we see was edited in from, I believe, the original series' film stills. I wonder how much better this process will look when done today.

From memory (ie: Don't quote me :) ) they built a wedge of set which you can see Scotty walking on and sitting down in. The first shot when the doors open is a still from a TOS episode which featured the bridge empty, and the shot of the viewscreen is footage from a TOS episode. (Pre-remastering, naturally. You can even see a hair on the footage.) So hopefully, they'll use the remastered TOS footage for the still and the viewscreen. Surely they will.

I wouldn't be surprised if they go with a cg matte for the the empty bridge shot and view screen. Not sure how much sharing of footage from other Trek projects there will be with TNG-R, we will see!

Andy did not simply plop the saucer and nacelles of the D on Excelsior. He tried to find a design which suggested an evolutionary step between the ships. You might not like the design, but it's not as you're characterizing it.

Well I was just basing it off the side view drawing, but yeah, it does look a lot better in 3d, at least this shot:

Some of the others, I'm not so sure about.

As for TNG, I really look forward to The LAst OUtpost (I mean they really pushed to make that crappy set look good)< The Big Goodbye, 11001001, Datalore, Heart of Glory and WHere No One has Gone Before.

Ugh, I just saw Last Outpost for the first time in a while, and I'm not sure I even want to watch that one again in HD!

Between the tedious standoff with the Ferengi ship, and the cringe-worthy Ferengi acting everywhere else, this was one very hard episode to sit through. Even the mysterious, retro-cool planet set couldn't save it.

And I was just thinking it will be fun to revisit the corny episodes with the HD, the strange transporter effects, and of course all the ship model photography!

Watched a large part of Farpoint in HD last night, admittedly from a huge sized download rip. While being impressed for the most part with the picture quality, I found the whole thing suffering from the general awfulness of the script and much of the acting, particularly from Denise Crosby and Marina Sirtis, the latter having to come out with some of the worst dialogue ever written. Now, I know that has no bearing on the BR quality, but anything that makes me cringe tends to detract from the overall experience.

Frankly it looked horrible in 4:3 on my widescreen LCD. Luckily my HD media player stretched it to letterbox and it filled the whole screen for a much better viewing experience. So little picture was lost, CBS really should remaster the series in 16:9 for those who want it and don't have the TV facility to stretch the image.

I hate to admit it, but that for all the increased clarity and colour depth, I miss the fuzz. OK, the first few seasons have looked terrible for years, but season 3 onwards are still very watchable upscaled at 720p.

The first two seasons were pretty ropey overall, and with the DVD quality being good enough for the seasons I watch from time to time, I think I'll be passing on the BR sets, and just obtain a few select episodes in HD.

That is your choice, but I'm sorry that you illegally downloaded it, then stretched the compressed image and judge it based on this.

Yes the writing is awful, but at 1080p, the technology behind this remastering is just incredible, and the clarity is awesome. Sorry you didn't rent or buy the $14 Bluray.

I understand zooming in on a 4:3 show, but I don't get why people would want to ever watch a stretched image. I always find that distracting as hell.

God mine looks beautiful on my 55 in. And it doesn't change the writing or acting, but absolutely improves production values.

And when I ripped it to put it on my devices, it looks awful stretched, awful.

I really have no problem downloading them, but I also purchase them. I would have downloaded it, but for once it was actually faster to rip it myself.

That's more-or-less as I recall it, but I think there might be one or two scenes where we see parts of the bridge that wasn't built as an actual set.

This has nothing to do with anything... but I'm really looking forward to seeing Dr. Selar in HD.

She was yummy. :)

I was thinking today that the period costumes and film-noir type lighting used in The Big Goodbye will probably look really good in High-def.

I wonder when we'll get new preview screenshots and an updated trailer?

Quite the coincidence. It was these scenes that crossed my mind a few days ago when thinking about which episodes I was most looking forward to seeing from season one. I liked a lot of the 'period' pieces that TNG did (this one, a lot of Holodeck stuff in general, the train scenes from 'Emergence,' etc.) I'm not sure how much lighting had something to do with it, but I always thought scenes like the ones above had such a great mood about them.

I love The Last Outpost! Can't wait to see it in HD. :techman:

The end of that ep, with the finger traps, is pure cheese of the highest quality :)

There was a LOT of cheese in this episode. Like that cornball stuff about Uncle Sam and the flags, or Data and Geordi whispering smartass remarks to each other while Picard is conducting a tense dialogue with a new alien species. Or the Ferengi waving their arms around like a bunch of monkees.

And what was up with Spiner in that briefing room scene?? He sounded completely stoned off his ass, and delivered his dialogue in the softest, most un-Data like way I've ever heard him. :wtf:

Definitely a Guilty pleasure!

"they adorn themselves with gold....a waste of the precious metal....."

"they force their females to wear clothing..."

Aside from how the Ferengi act I think The Last Outpost is a good episode with some good character moments for pretty much everyone, a decent mystery and Riker's interaction with Portal and talking about Earth philosophers is good stuff.

Oh Gawd, I hope they don't do that!! The composite of Scotty over remastered TOS footage should look amazing.

Yech!! The 4:3 OAR image of Farpoint looks incredible centered on my 55" plasma, much like the blu ray of Casablanca. I can't imagine taking a pristinely created transfer and distorting it for the purposes of arbitrarily fitting the display.

This is ST:TNG in HD. Nothing more, nothing less. Filmed, edited and presented in 4:3. Re-scanned, re-edited, re-color-balanced, re-composited and presented in the clearest manner possible; the show we've been celebrating for nearly 25 years. Do what you want with the image, I'll be watching the show as it was created. "Anything else is a waste of material."

I wonder what the OP saw. As a comparison, someone gave me their downloaded copy of nuStar Trek in "1080p". I watched it on my PC for a bit, then compared it to my legit nuStar Trek Blu-ray. The difference is big. The file, sure it's "1080p" but only being about 4gb size, has lost a lot of data. You can see the high compression in a ton of artefacts that make it look like "very grainy" film. The image off the Blu-ray is crystal clear. Having said that, I wouldn't judge TNG-R based on a ripped file that was probably compressed to shit and looks like bad HD.

My whole take on the WideScreen vs 4:3 debate:
If the original film has the extra space to create a distortion free 16:9 image, then they show have gone for it. Anything that is not supposed to be in the image (mic booms, cables, etc) could be CGI'd out.
If the film does not have enough space to create the 16:9 without distorting it, then leave it as is.
I personally don't care, except for the fact that I own a Plasma, so I have to keep in mind always to no try and burn out my middle pixels while the pixels in my black bars go unused, so I will alternate between stretching 4:3 to 16:9 on occasion. You actually get used to it after 5 mins watching something and don't notice it anymore.
God mine looks beautiful on my 55 in. And it doesn't change the writing or acting, but absolutely improves production values.
I have no problem with Yar's acting. She is about the same as everyone else in quality except Patrick Stewart, which even here practically carried the episode. I could tolerate Troi's whining and crying, but the whole scene with the "Joy! And Grateiteute!" lines make me cringe horribly every single time. I mute the volume at this scene now.

I thought it was great. One of the better Season 1 ep's.
