They don't have to "recreate" them, just re-composite the original elements. That's a touch or two "easier" to do that making entirely new shots with CGI.
Well, if I talk about creating a meal you probably don't expect me to raise the cattle and reap the corn either - they are being recreated from existing ingredients. Besides, davejames was just quoting the word Ross used originally ...
They are most definitely recreating the FX shots. Compositing the elements using more sophisticated methods than what were available during the original production, tweaking lighting, color balance, and levels between the various layers, recreating starfields and animation effects. This is far from trivial or 're-heating' leftovers.

Well, not to say what they are doing is easy or trivial but that for my definition is "re-creation." They're putting the elements back together, yes they're making adjustments, tweaks and maybe new elements like starfields, planets, etc. But, for the most part, the only thing being "re-created" is the final outcome of everything. They still have the film of the models and such so some of the work is already done for them.

They’ve got black capsule-shaped nozzles based on the 6-footer model rework for Generations. The 4-footer has some red squares taped on.

I think it's a pretty decent effort. As someone who is a moderate fan and wouldn't notice minor edits or knows where the RCS thrusters are it looks like TNG "should" to me. Though, some things like Data's holodeck double are really obvious now.
I haven't watched any reruns in a long time so it's been a fun way to reexperience TNG. I've always liked Farpoint because I always remember the experience and excitement of watching it for the first time so I'm glad they included that in the sampler.
Now I gotta wait for a rerun to see just how bad it really did look before.
EDIT: Shit, didn't notice the watch and review thread, sorry...
My brother and I watched about an hour of Farpoint, and I noticed in the holodeck, you can see Brent Spiner's natural skin tone; earlier, his lips are remarkably pink on the battle bridge, as if he'd been kissing Yar and got some of her lipstick on him.
The ship at warp at the odd angle is STILL there. Deneb looks a bit 'meh.' Especially with what seem like 20 of the same establishing shot without much, if any variation.
As someone stated before, the transporter effect doesn't reflect on the floor as you would expect if it were real. Also, when Riker along beams up to the stardrive section, his transporter effect doesn't look like it lines up quite right.
I'm getting my copy tomorrow from Amazon, so I'll be able to finish tomorrow evening. The image itself looks amazing, especially in comparison to the streaming versions on Netflix.
Damn. The ship at warp at the odd angle is STILL there.
