JOne thing I did find distracting was during the intro sequence when the ringed planet passes by the stars in the background move in two different patterns. I hope they fix that when they start releasing the rest of the series.

If you're talking about the ersatz-Saturn in the season 3-onward credits, that mismatch was always there. They used the rings to hide the transition between the starfield used in the original ship footage and the starfield generated for the new opening visuals. They probably didn't correct it on purpose, as it's an artifact of the way the credits were originally created.

^Correct. And I believe it was already reported as a 'beloved mistake' that they'll be keeping.

Even though I never liked that mismatch, I don't think it's a big deal...I see it as a stylistic transition to a different scene, not as one long camera take. After all, where are all those planets when the Enterprise swings in that direction a few moments later? ;)

That was the one. I read about it once but I never noticed it on the low-res DVDs. In HD the individual stars are much easier to see.

For me it's the only fault in an otherwise flawless sequence. If it was there originally I understand and respect their views. If they're going to the trouble of fixing some other faults (like the energy beam in the pilot) something like this seems almost trivial. Just mask the old starfield behind the rings more should do the trick.

The exploding Batris

Unless this is just rough footage it looks like they've gotten rid of the really nice, fluffy trademark orange and pink TNG explosions for something rougher and more yellow and harsh. I don't really care for it. So the sploddies weren't captured on film? That seems odd. Interesting to see that even when scaled to the same size the crappy Amazon video is sharper and more detailed than the DVD screen cap.

Thats highly unfortunate because the replacement cg explosion sucks!

If you take a closer look you will see, that they used the same explosion twice on this model. They did not even change the timing!!!
The right explosion is a smaller version rotated by 90° counterclock wise of the big explosion on the left...

Come on producers, you can do better than that!

That.... actually works as far as making the explosion look "real" and powerful.
Yeah, BSG used this kind of effect whenever nukes hit the outside of ships. It gave nukes a real sense of power compared to the non-nuclear weapons.

I mean if you consider the M/AM reactors these ships have it makes a bit of sense the explosions would look awesomely powerful.

And I agree in keeping the mis-matched stars as the camera passes by the Saturn-like planet just gives a certain "something special" to things.

Looks the same on the original though. Albeit maybe offset by a couple of frames.

Noticed that since the first time it aired. Saw what they did at the time and figured there was no real sense getting worked up about it. I'm sure it's more noticeable in HD. It probably took more effort to recreate the mismatch since I'd imagine the entire starfield was replaced.

I'm far more curious how the Solar System intro looks from season one/two? I understand they were looking to add some more "spaced out" visuals for the later seasons but I always preferred the original (regardless of the glitch) To be honest I usually skip over the credit sequence anyway (although the dvd's sometimes misplaced the first chapter stop deeper into the first act :scream:)

Higher res copy of the new German trailer up at TrekCore!

Plus - full translation into English, and some points of commentary!

Great work as always!! Thanks for posting :techman:

Love the dubbing on Geordi, "Fire!!" Should get that guy to redub LeVar in english just for yucks!

The Batris explosion does look pretty damn good in motion.

And my god, do I love the look of the 6-footer... such a shame that the realities of TV production left us with the 4-footer for so much of latter-day TNG :wtf:

Can't wait to see more!! I'm way more excited by this then I ever thought I would be!!!

Let's just hope they go back and eliminate all footage with the 4 foot model... replacing it with a CGI model they used for the saucer seperation, the shot with the BoP and the Warp out scene from "The Inner Light".

I've read things like this from some people here, and all I have to ask is, why would they do that? That's WAY more work than they are supposed to be doing for this project. Unless it's VFX that needs to be recomposited or a damaged scene that needs to be reshot, they're not just going to replace the four-footer just because they think some fans didn't like it. I don't like all the re-uses of the movie models, but they're not going to replace those just because I don't like them.

Yeah even if they had the time and money, I'd much rather have the physical models on screen (even if it's the 4-footer) than a bunch of CGI models.

Plus, regardless of what you think of the model itself, they got a LOT of really cool and dynamic shots with that thing, which I would hate to lose.

Yeah I always assumed it was just a fancy scene dissolve to another section of space-- especially because the scale of the Enterprise seems so completely off from the planet we just saw.

Actually if there's anything I wish the new team could improve, it's the REST of the credit sequence, with the cheesy shots of the Enterprise zipping by. I know it's supposed to be a take off on the TOS sequence, but it's always looked so... cheap to me, and I wished they could have done something more imaginative than that.

Well, because the 4 foot model simply looks bad on screen. It looked bad in SD and will look horrible in HD. It's almost as bad as the Playmates Toy which was released in 1992...

It's really not a big deal to replace those shots. They can keep the pacing and the dynamic, just redo it with a CGI model that matches the 6 foot model in shape (I do not count missing windows ;) ).

I'm far more curious how the Solar System intro looks from season one/two?

Pretty much the same, just nicer. The Moon still spins off its axis and plunges into the Sun so they've not changed anything.

Cool. Can't wait to see it in 1080p. :bolian:

As for the Enterprise, I'm glad they're not replacing the 4-foot model outright with CGI. As said above, Image G was able to achieve some great dynamic shots, I just wish they had been able to keep using the 6-footer.

Well, because the 4 foot model simply looks bad on screen.

It looks different. It doesn't look bad. If you had gotten the 4 footer first and the 6 foot second you'd complain that the 6ft was too smooth and plain.

No, I don't think so. Most miniatures of Starfleet ships are pretty smoth - they are not plain. The 4-footer is the one that doesn't look... right compared to the other models: Excelsior, Miranda, the 6-footer of the D, Oberth, and later the Voyager and the Defiant.
