The Obligatory Mid-Off Series Companions Poll

Vote for your FIVE favorite companions

  • Total voters
    54
Could you imagine the reaction a year ago if somebody claimed that Donna would get more than twice the number of votes than Rose in this poll?
That's one of the things that I was intrigued to see in the poll results. When most people have voted (say in the next few days), I'll post the results from the poll I did a year ago.

I think Donna's benefitting from the immediacy factor. It will be interesting to see whether her popularity has legs, a la Sara Jane.

Meanwhile, even though she wasn't in my top 5, I'm stunned at the relatively low total for Romana. Tied with Tegan :wtf: fer cryin' out loud! And Ms. Jovanka is on my list of all-time most annoying companions, along with Peri and Mel. And are there no old-timers out there with a thing for Polly or Ben?

Sic transit gloria mundi.

Brig, Sarah, Tegan, Ace, and Captain Jack. Romana I in the other thread...

Jamie, The Brig, Sarah, Leela, Romana....

Might have voted Ian and Babs, but they really come as a package deal and with only five choices, there wasn't room

The Brig, Donna, Liz Shaw, Sergeant Benton, Sarah Jane.

I also wanted to vote for Teegan, Romana 2, Rose, Harry and Jack. Maybe next time. :)

I went for Sarah Jane, Ace, Rose, Donna & Martha.

(And I still say Martha should come before Donna chronologically, at least as far as being a regular series Companion. IMO, Donna didn't achieve Companion status until Series 4. In TRB, she was more of an....Acquaintance.) :) And don't get me started about Adam!) :D

I voted for Ian, Barbara, Romana, Rose, & Mickey. Although, now that I think about it, if I could, I would rescind my vote for Rose and give it to the Brigadier or Sarah Jane instead. Oh, and an honorable mention for Harry Sullivan.

Romana (I) has always been one of my favorites. The chemistry between Mary Tamm & Tom Baker is part of what first got me into the series.

I voted for Mickey because I always felt like Mickey needed more friends. (Rose was such a cloying bitch towards him sometimes.)

And since I just finished re-watching "The Daleks," I find Ian & Barbara absolutely charming. I think the pacing of their episodes is a bit too slow but the characters are bang on. I think perhaps I'd like to see the 11th Doctor have a companion kind of like Ian. I like seeing someone other than the Doctor driving the story forward while the Doctor himself is a bit of a distracted X factor.

While 'tis true that Adam sucked, he fits the bill of a Companion a lot better than several other people on that list. The Doctor did invite him to travel in the TARDIS, or at least gave Rose permission to invite him.

*sings*

Donna's in the lead, Donna's in the lead, Donna's in the lead!

Yeah, but 500 quatloos says SJS will win in the long term...give it about a year.

This is a good place to draw out a larger point. It's struck many of us, myself included, that Donna and SJS are very much alike in terms of the sort of companions they were during their run. Rose is the companion that had the serious romantic thing for the Doctor. That part of his relationship with SJS was retconned by RTD in School Reunion. It was never actually something we saw in the classic series. It strikes me, then, that perhaps keeping the companion/Doctor relationship more along those fraternal lines is something that is better for Who in the long run.

Sarah Jane and Donna? I think Tegan and Donna are much better parallels, especially if you compare Time-Flight and "The Fire of Pompeii."

Dr Liz Shaw (My first companion)
Ace (companion of my era)
Sarah Jane (Best companion)
Donna Noble (Best used of the nu-companions)
Martha Jones (My favorite of the nu-companions)

Well, one of the things that I think helped keep romance out of the classic series was that none of the classic Doctors were as conventionally "sexy" as Christopher Eccleston & David Tennant. William Hartnell & Patrick Troughton were both old. Tom Baker, Colin Baker, & Sylvester McCoy were all goofy character actors. Peter Davison was the most handsome of the classic Doctors but I also feel there was an intense asexuality to his performance. Jon Pertwee was probably the sexiest of the classic Doctors but even that was in more of an older, Sean Connery sort of way.

So says you. I know there are plenty of people who think each of the previous Doctors were sexy. ;)
