So I was just curious. Has anybody heard any news or rumors regarding the new companion after the ponds depart? I was wondering what direction they might be going as far as casting this time.

StScoop would probably have already posted any information on a new companion if it were available...haven't heard a peep about about any legit info.

There's been surprisingly little revealed so far. Apparently a number of episodes have yet to actually be written (which isn't unusual), so it's possible the lack of "leaks" may be related to the fact the episode that introduces the new companion(s) hasn't been written yet (for all we know he or she might not be introduced until the closing minutes of Episode 14*). Certainly there's been no indication of casting. I would guess we'll know by summer. Given the nature of the series, there's of course no way to predict what would happen. A human female in her 20s is the template, but there's no hard and fast rule on that, of course.
The only guarantee is people will love her/him and hate her/him in equal measure, as is the case with all companions, perhaps amplified if they pull another Catherine Tate and cast someone vilified by the fanbase for some unpopular character they play on telly, only to have the critics silenced within the first 5 minutes (as was the case with Catherine Tate).

I'm flattered. (And you're probably right.)
For a while Sophia Myles was doing her best to make people think it was her, which pretty much makes her the one actor you can rule out.
I'm guessing we won't have any actual news on this particular topic until later in the year...perhaps a little bit after series seven has started to air?
Basically the two most realistic dates are (a) in a couple of weeks at the Official Convention or (b) in mid-to-late May which is when she/he/it will start shooting.
