The New Mutants -- news, rumors, opix, etc;

"Nigh Invulnerable"

I hope they don't replace Sam in New Mutants. However, I wouldn't be opposed to replacing Sam in X-Force with Negasonic. I also would love to see Boom Boom and NTW together.

“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe,” Boone says. “There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”

A secret source close to the production also elaborated on the plot, which focuses on mutants during their teenage years, when their powers are new and they are the most dangerous to themselves and others.

Logline: “Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.”

Not at all what I was expecting to hear. If the second quote is accurate, it could be something interesting. I just hope this doesn't turn out to literally be a standard horror movie but with superpowers. I've no interesting in establishing a whole new team of mutants just to watch them devolve into character archetypes and get killed by a monster.

Yeah, this isn't New Mutants at all. Its another case of FOX doing "in-name-only" X-Men characters. At this point, its fairly obvious that no one cares less about the X-Men comics then FOX. In a time when most superhero movies have move past being ashamed of their source material and even darker stuff like the DCEU at least has characters that look recognizable, FOX still hates costumes. It also hates actually using characters that even mildly resemble the comic versions unless they absolutely have to. Deadpool is the one exception, but its also the one X-Men movie brand not being done by the same few writers/producers/etc that do every main X-Men movie.

The movie they describe is literally a movie that could be done by any studio with any license. Change the term mutant to metahuman and any company on Earth could make it. Sure, they'll stick some familiar names and maybe powers on their original characters, and we'll probably see that weird psychic bear from the NM comics and maybe a McAvoy cameo, but once again FOX basically just uses their license as a source of names and powers for characters and not much else. Plus, now its almost certain they're going to pointlessly kill some of them off. Ugh, FOX really does the worst with their licensed properties. If you're not going to do New Mutants, why bother? Its not like Fant4stic, they're not going to lose the rights to the X-Men if they don't crap out a pointless in-name-only film like new Mutants.

I'd rather they focus on the Gambit movie over this, and that is not a movie I think many people care if it gets made or not at this point, myself included.

So they're not even going to be students at Xavier's? I do think there's potential in the idea of doing one of these as a horror story, but for it to be more than just a generic teen horror movie, you really need to bring in recognizable elements from the comics. We could still be getting that, but it doesn't seem that way from the synopsis.

Yeah, I'm this film's biggest cheerleader and I find the synopsis very disappointing.

The worst thing is that The New Mutants is a great team. They have interesting members with unique powers and have many storylines that could be the basis for great movies. But, apparently FOX doesn't want to use something cool from the comics. They probably just thought "Hey, Marvel and DC haven't done a horror film yet", and then just picked the New Mutants name mostly at random and slapped the idea together. I think you could probably do a decent superhero horror film with the X-Men characters. Using the Necrosha or Dracula vs X-Men events (they may not have the rights to the specific Dracula design marvel uses, but they could really do any vampire and call him Dracula) would work well.

Heck, with Necrosha they could bring back dead X-Men, and in any era. It could be set in 2017, and still bring back someone like the First Class version of Banshee and it would fit fine. I suppose there not being enough dead X-Men connected to the present day movies could be an issue, but they could even set it in the 80s era and have some of the B-list X-Men we saw (like Jubilee who looked cool but only got about a minute of screen time in Apocalypse) fight some of the mutants who died between First Class and Apocalypse (Jubilee and whoever vs Banshee, Angel, Emma Frost, maybe even Shaw? I think it could work). That might even work in the present day. Have Kelsey Grammer as Beast (with the make up and stunt doubles I think he could still do it) and a group of students fighting dead X-Men he recongnises. The dead X-Men could be anything from relatively normal looking to more zombie-ish.

But, no, nothing like that. Instead, they've just shoved the New Mutants into some horror movie :brickwall:

Do the Brood have enough of an X-Men connection to use them, or are they more likely to be part of the MCU? They seem like something from the comics that it would be easy to base a horror movie around. I guess they might be a little close to the Alien Xenomorphs, but they could always tweak them a bit to remove some of the similarities.

I would say the Brood are almost absolutely connected to the X-Men. They were introduced there. They have strong ties to the Shi'ar and the Starjammers.

Are those original release dates of the three 2018 Fox Marvel movies still accurate? Just as New Mutants is actually released first (April 13th, with Deadpool 2 June 1st, and Dark Mystique November 2nd) but has gone into production last. Not that that necessarily means anything, just saying.

It might just be the least complex. It sounds like most of it will be in one location, so that alone probably makes things easier, if they're not going to having to travel to million different cities and/countries.
