Spoilers The new (massive spoiler) ship!

Other than the nacelles being angular, none of those DSC ships looks like the other. And most of them look like ships that would be operating post-TUC. SNW is starting to get it right, though.

Yeah, the more that SNW gives us their take on TOS ships, the more unimpressed I am of DSC S1. They basically put the equivalent of 21st century Navy designs in a war of 1812 movie.

In my head canon, I'll assume Traveler-Wesley farted and went back later to fix the aesthetics.

I disagree completely. To me they look like an in between of TOS and TMP. Most of them have TOS-esque buzzard collectors with blocky nacelles, Connie Refit style phaser emitters, and physical deflector dishes like the Connie. They're almost a hybrid of the two aesthetics just with a darker hull colour.

The Shenzhou is the odd one out.

Remember, the Enterprise is already 11 years old when Discovery Starts, and 20 when TOS Season 1 starts.

Look how much Starfleet Design aesthetic changed by the time the Enterprise-D would have been 10 years old (around the same time as First Contact).

In my head canon those designs were largely experimental as part of the larger Federation integrating new members. With the losses suffered in the Klingon War updates were made based upon performance, moving towards the Constitution style, and influenced by Daystrom's work.

And I'd still take those designs over the 24th Century. Or, hell, even the Excelsior and Oberth class ships from the films.

Eaves's headcanon from before the show aired, because he didn't actually know the plot of Discovery outside of there being some sort of experimental propulsion drive, was that the square nacelles were needed to use that drive. Now we know that's not true, but interesting none the less.

Honestly, the Bussards and deflectors look like afterthoughts on most of the ships, and don't look like the TOS Enterprise or the TMP refit at all.

I'm not big into the tech side of the franchise - it's cool, but I don't tend to dwell much beyond 'hey, that looks neat' - so I don't have an issue with this. In fact, hey, that looks neat.

I feel the same. I can't get too hung up over every little detail. As long as the ship looks neat and fits with its surroundings I'm happy.

I don’t see why SNW couldn’t have the Kelvin show up now, especially since they already referenced it in dialogue. Someone can correct me if my info is wrong.
It certainly can show up, but I'd expect it to look different, as every single thing in SNW does.

Same layout, but made of Disco/SNW ship parts and probably somewhat smaller.

I think it could be said that we already have seen a little bit of Kelvin influence in the Discovery era ships. I mean, the Bridge module of the Shepard Class is basically the same as that of the Kelvin. The Shenzhou is armed with Phaser Cannons, virtually identical to those on the Kelvin. Plus, I see more then a little Kelvin influence in the bridge of the Shenzhou.

Nice to see those side by side. Definitely some similarities there, which I appreciate.

Yeah, when I saw the Shenzhou set, my first thought was they'd based it heavily of the Kelvin. I just miss those random-ass antennae and cables the Kelvin bridge had everywhere. And crewman wearing headsets with mics (and all the cool augmentations we saw on early Discovery season 1 crewpersons, there were people wired into their consoles!)

EDIT: Also there's an interview somewhere where they openly say the Section 31 ships were based on the Vengeance from Into Darkness (not that there could be any doubt)

Yeah, I'm with you on loving the strange little oddities that we saw on the Kelvin. Honestly, I'm fine with the "JJprise" and all that came with it, but I LOVE the Kelvin. The ship, bridge, uniforms, shuttles, all great! You can see how alot of it built off what we saw in Enterprise, and how it could evolve into what we saw in TOS or even SNW.

The D looked ugly as fuck when it was first shown.

Well, I'm different. I love the D from the first time I saw it in the TV, long time ago. But I hate TOS Enterprise, maybe because of it's 1960's visualization that didn't age well when I first saw it in television.
