So they are backpedaling on the Klingons then?

About bloody time.
Backpedaling? People have been speculating about this being the case from the beginning, right? Some time ago, I suspected a fundamentalist-metaphor to be a applied to these Klingons, and maybe these Klingons choose to loose all their hair, just like certain fundamentalists not shave off beards. I hope that -because in the article it is specifically mentioned that these 'ancient' Klingons look different and don't have any hair- we will also get to see Klingons that resemble what we saw on TOS/TNG.

It’s a 200-year-old ship. This is a group of Klingons who’ve gone back to a puritan way of life. They look very different: they wear armor that’s 200 years old and they don’t have any hair.
If this really is the case. That these are different from the "normal" klingons then I'm fine with it. I think that they could have spared the fandom a lot of grief and infighting by telling that earlier.

If by backpedaling you mean the details of the story that they've had all along are coming to light and the people that jump to conclusions and don't give things a chance are starting to feel a bit chasten...sure, they're back peddling.
Well it will be easy to know if that's true or not.

If the original story does a sudden 180 mid season then we know they backpedaled and re-wrote things for the episode they hadn't yet shot. If the story is all inclusive from the first episode with no obvious additions then we know they intended that all along and were just horrible at marketing.

I thought 'sarcophagus ship' was one of the very first leaks about this show?
Correct, leaked in June 2016! Was one of the earliest leaks, and it is amazing that the designs leaked back then have remained so close to the final thing..!

Veeery cool stuff. These Klingons are shaping up to be the most interesting incarnation of that fictional species/culture we've seen. Never really liked the Klingons on the TNG shows, but this new version has me intrigued. Looking forward to it.

Very similar but the design has changed. Also, that shot of it on the planet/planetoid is most likely a temp shot so it will be even more detailed in the show.

From what I can tell, almost everything visual is a reimagining. The Klingons are no different. We may have 200 yr old Klingons, but the holograms of other Klingons in the trailer are different from the Fletcher design. So I expect to see no conventional Klingons...though maybe one of the houses resembles them.

Now this is really interesting:

"[The] Klingon ‘sarcophagus ship’ — an enormous vessel (three times the size of its Federation counterparts — [belongs] to a 25th Klingon house that we hadn’t previously heard of."

"It’s a 200-year-old ship. This is a group of Klingons who’ve gone back to a puritan way of life. They look very different: they wear armor that’s 200 years old and they don’t have any hair."

Does that mean the other klingon houses have hair???? I would be SOOO happy!!

"In the past, Klingons have not really cared about their dead – they’re not like marines. But these Klingons are. The outside of the ship is covered in thousands of coffins. Some are 300 years old, some are just two days old."

This would be like the perfect explanation why those klingons look so different, and especially why this ship looks like nothing we have ever seen before. At least, this made me more interested in the final product. However, whether I will LIKE it or not depends a great deal on how they portray the other, supposedly 'familiar' 24 klingon houses. If they're a few background dudes with hair and the classic klingon look? I'd be madly in love with the producers. Will they look like T'Kuvma and his mullrat-klingons? Ruined the probably most iconic Trek species for me.
Let's wait and see. But this description has ignited a flame that has long gone almost extinct in the last few months: Excitement. If even only a little bit.
:klingon:

It's interesting to see the theories about the true age of these DIS Klingons, and I can't wait to see them in action. My excitement has been creeping up for a good week or two now.

That is the swanky side of town.

What happens when they run out of room?
Good question. It makes me wonder how much of it is ship and how much is stiffs. Welding your dead to the hull is an interesting idea, though I never thought we'd see Klingons with such a case of separation anxiety.

"Backpedaling" sounds as if you think the showrunners had a different plan for the Klingons in this series, but changed those plans mid-stream.

If so, what do you think the original plan for the Klingons was that now has them backpedaling in this new direction?

I thought 'sarcophagus ship' was one of the very first leaks about this show?
Yes -- the idea that these Klingons are associated with a sarcophagus ship has been discussed for several months. I knew it was "officially" just a rumor, but at the same time I thought that was a true rumor that the show leaked (either intentionally or unintentionally.

Granted and like I said, I don't think the idea of the sarcophagus ship was official until now; HOWEVER, I don't understand why some fans would be so surprised by it.

If this bald and overly ornamental design is just for this sect of Klingons, then it is absolutely fine. Though I really can't say I like the idea of a huge 200 year old supership. Sounds very 40Kish rather than Star Trekish.
