The New Enterprise in 3D! ... NOW FINISHED (threads merged)

FYI... has anyone actually noticed that the "bridge window" doesn't seem to be visible on the model? Unless it's where we would have previously imagined that it was the forward topside scanner (the "lit slot")... but there are three of those, one to either side and one up-front... and the two on the sides aren't windows...

Maybe this means that the front "window" isn't a window after all? Or maybe I'm just missing it? Or maybe it's a HUGE continuity goof?

Well, that was my first guess when I saw the scene of Spock in front of the viewscreen/window, apparently looking out over the primary hull. I imagined the bridge being huge, perhaps utilizing all three of those windows, since the bridge does appear more spread out, with more tiers of stations...I'm OK to accept that the screen is JUST a screen, but, the shape of the window in the scene sure does have a similar shape to the "slit" in the model. And the scale does seem to coorespond. (well, somewhat)
Having said that, I have no earthly idea what the old traditional bridge dome above might actually be (if this is the case), with those slits being so low.
Maybe it's Kirk's private bachelor pad/sex yacht. We'll see it in the "cut scenes" option on the DVD. :)

Ah, it's the skylight... underneath that dome is a big hot-tub... the "Captain's Nookie-room" (later to be renamed "ready-room" by captains who don't seem to get laid very often, but want to be ready in case they ever do).

The neck isn't quite thick enough, and the outer shell of the secondary hull is too regular. It should have slight "love handles" on each side of the hull, just above the bottom of the "belly".
Yeah, I know. I was having trouble making the neck thicker and having it still line up with the slit in the front of the Secondary Hull. Same with the part of the "belly", I just couldn't make it look right, so I got as close as I could. It's still more accurate than Version 1, though. :)

I'm starting to like this Enterprise better than the original. When will you start on the space station or Spock's timeship?

I already started on the station, in a basic form. I will get to it with more enthusiasm after the Enterprise is done. :)

Then on to the Kelvin again. :)

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Oh yeah, she definitley looks better from other angles... especially behind.

:rommie:
Great post! "she looks better from behind." I hope she takes it as a compliment! :guffaw:
Great work to MadMan1701A, I think you've truly quelled some fears about the new/"old" design here today. And I agree... she does look better from behind.

Re: Ok, someone had to do it... The New Enterprise in 3D!

Quelled some fears, confirmed more. We are screwed.

And I really miss pudding pops. Why'd they stop making those?

This ship has some really sick multi-axis compound curves and blended things and creases that are hard to reconcile in ortho sketches, etc.
I think Ancient's ortho comparisons are a great help in shape and proportion, compared to the TOS E.
You are really doing an amazing job of fleshing this out, and helping to answer alot of questions as to how this thing looks. And I do think they are releasing conflicting/distorted images of the ship, making your job even more difficult. (The young kirk/construction view might be the least distorted, so far. but it is covered in scaffolding, and it's full of holes.)

Great modelling work.

At some point, I wonder if it would be viable to match up your work with Ancient's ortho studies, etc. etc. and pool together all of these things that we are seeing.
To get a cohesive, super accurate model. Before the movie comes out:) That would be cool.

Another thread perhaps.

Yes, that would be awesome, but I doubt we can get super accurate. :)

I can go ahead and make a matchup between Ancients ortho, and a side ortho of mine, when I get closer to done.

A pretty big update...

Hopefully more Updates soon.

I'm interseted in seeing how much the different versions line up too.

Oh yeah, I was trying not to thread-stretch too much so I never posted the full-size working version of my drawings. So here they are. I don't know if they're be any help to you, MadMan, but I hope they help some, I know this ship must be a royal pain to model.

EDIT: ARGH! You updated while I was posting! Great work, looks even better this time.

Beautiful. Looking forward to V2 being completed.

In my last post, I think I was more referring to spotting details, etc., that could be contributed, debated, and incorporated in a constructive way.

(I think back years and years ago, during TMP/TWOK, there was no internet or no home PC's with photoshp or 3D modelling software...taking little pencil sketches to school, and comparing notes:)....how times have changed:).

I think you've got the proprotions nailed, btw.

What is that blue "DeviantArt"-looking background you use in your renderings? I've always liked it, but kept forgetting to ask.

Thanks. :) Shouldn't be long, now.

The background, it's just something I threw together one day. I took the default Blender blue background, and just make a gradient, and then took that source image and did a motion blur on it. I think the original pic was of beams, or something. :)

Interesting....

I wonder how mine will line up.

I'll be right back...

Pretty close, huh? :)

That's kinda trippy.

Actually, they ain't far off. I notice your bussards don't have 100% clearance. I really pushed to get that, and I think my upper saucer structure is bigger. So my nacelles are really sitting up there.

Anyway, that was pretty enlightening, thanks for doing it.

Yeah, in that head on pic that someone posted, it looks like the Nacelles don't quite clean the saucer, but it could just be the perspective.

Your Drawings may me more accurate than my model, I think.
