The New Artist's Thread (Warning: Large Image Size)

^^

One of the reasons I'd probably never be a hardcore artist; that thing looks finished right now!

This was something I did a while ago, way back in December. I had a piece of plywood and nothing else to do with my acrylic paint, so I figured I'd do something simple. Usually when I paint anything, the paint isn't the main piece of what I was trying to do.

For example, while ago I was thinking about making a movie, until I realized that my camera records in a format that is nothing but a serious pain in the ass. But before I realized that, I created this little guy:

I eventually painted him silver, but problems with his eyes (i.e, they fell off constantly) and the little string by which I controlled him (it kept tangling) led to him being chucked... somewhere. I'm sure I still have him, but I honestly don't feel he's worth digging up.

I always mess up the proportions and/or placement of limbs, unless I make a very careful template for every character, which can take up to 10 minutes per limb.

That actually sounds about right, and may be conservative. There's an old saw about 50 lines for every one you can (or should) actually use.

I would be mortified to admit how long it actually takes me to produce decent work.

Anyway, I like the crab monster.
Dear lord, I could never work like that! Art only works for me in a frenzy. If the lines aren't coming out right the first time I give it up for the night, or sometimes the week, or even month. I am only active as a visual artist probably a combined two months out of the year. Over a period of a week or two a vast amount of work pours out of me and then the visually creative juices run dry for months on end. This means a lot of unfinished pieces, or at least pieces that I leave only to return to months or years later when the mania strikes again.

I'm the opposite. I compulsively and continually finish art, to the extent I'm reasonably sure it's a personality disorder. An extremely watchful viewer would have noticed that the Brainiac picture above has changed three times.

But then I go a while without practicing, because it's exhausting to do it that way, and I wind up with little personal growth in skill because I fix-fix-fix instead of abandoning or re-doing.

I mean, I'm still not 100% pleased.

I should practice more, and develop a portfolio and some sequential work. I'm not sure if I'm really professional-grade, but there are enough people who aren't who still somehow get work. And it would obviate the need to practice something as insipid as the law.

The following was done at the tail end of my last visual arts outburst, and while it really has only an hour or two's work left to go, I just can't bring myself to pick up a paintbrush and finish it:

It's a terribly inefficient and unprofessional way to work, but I can't seem to work in any other way.
You should totally finish it when you get the impulse, though, it's pretty great.

Although I'm unsure what a guy with symbolic vaginas for eyes is supposed to represent? My guess is humanity, or possibly a Bizarro Corinthian. I like it.

lol. Actually, it's nothing to do with sexual symbolism (at least not consciously!). The image just came to me while I had a thing for painting people with flowers for eyes. I did one of my little sister too. I posted it before, but the picture was still wet. Here's a new pic, they photograph better when dry:

And Georgia O'Keefe was just painting cow skulls and roses... :shifty:

But it's good work.

Probably the last Supergirl I'll do for a while. Or maybe not, since I want to do some Legion work, and she might be in it. Also, Cassandra Cain.

Gotham is easy. Krypton is hard.

A MAD Look at Dada?

Regarding Champions, I hadn't thought anything of it, since I had no idea what it was. Checking into it, it appears to be an MMO like City of Heroes? Well, I'm sure it's fun for folks who like that sort of thing, but WoW with superheroes is still WoW to me. :p

Well, anyway, like I said, I did some Legion stuff.

Hey, some sequential work. In the Phantom Zone!

[edit: see couple posts below]

Seriously, this guy has a supervillain's origin. Incidentally, working in grayscale is just as hard as working in color, and the layering effects required for this one were a pain in the ass.

I'd give the full size ones on the last two as well, but my Imageshack account is all fucked up. I'm not 100% sure the first will be visible to anyone but me.

Neat. :)

Well, I'll use the Photobucket one even though it is small and weak:

Or was this already showing up?

This is something I'm proud of because even though it isn't a work of finesse it makes me giggle, and a good 900+ people on tumblr have likewise enjoyed it in the past day so I'm thinking someone here might enjoy it too hehe =D
