Suggesting someone isn't American because of an unusual typographic practice is a personal attack? :vulcan:

There are over 307,000,000 people in the United States while there are only 111,000,000 Mexicans. Why are some people so worked up over the Mexicans crossing the US border when there's so few people there?

That's a fair translation, it's basically what I took from it.

To the original poster, people are concerned that their tax money will go toward those who pay no taxes to begin with. More people on a public system (particularly those here illegally) inevitably means higher expenses for citizens. 111 million people is no small number, particularly when there are already millions of illegal immigrants in the United States (though the actual figure, estimated between 7-20 million, is very difficult to nail down). These people do not have preventive care (unless they pay, of course), while some receive Medicade and everybody is granted emergency care.

There's a valid argument to be made that if somebody is here "illegally," yet they have healthcare, a residence, a job and a state drivers license... what does "illegal" even mean? It's hard to talk about healthcare when U.S. policy on the issue of illegal immigration is already controversial and completely bipolar.

Frankly, I think it's a smokescreen. It's shooting down a possible solution to one problem by bringing up an unrelated issue. One bill is not going to address healthcare and fix illegal immigration in one fell swoop. There is no evidence from Europe that UHC leads to increased illegal immigration (Germany, for example, has UHC and borders or neighbours countries in similar states, healthcare wise, to Mexico. Yet its illegal immigration is comparable to US levels). So the problems can be viewed independently, and approaches can be made to fixing one without the other getting 'in the way'.

It helps to look at it this way -- one out of every six people lacks access to health care because they are uninsured.

One out of every six.

Put in those terms, why are one out of every six Americans being failed by the system in such a fashion? Why is the system broken in such a fashion?

There's your answer. One out of every six.

By the way, 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few' is a rather unpleasant, if not downright evil philosophy. It is noble when you are the few, but tyrannical when you are the many.

That's incorrect. The 47 million number includes between 12 and 20 million criminal aliens who do not deserve health insurance in America. It also includes millions of younger people who have access to health insurance but CHOOSE not to carry it so they can spend that money how they see fit. The # of people who are out in the cold is somwhere around 1/2 of that 47 million. Insurance for these fols needs to be made affordable and available, of course.

It should be "the needs of the many doesn't give them the right to rip off the few" :techman:

I completely agree. The 'needs' of the 5 out of 6 do not give them the right to consign the 1 in 6 to the gutter and deny them the most basic of dignities for fear of a 'socialist' bogeyman.

So by not giving MORE of my money to able-bodied adults who can earn their own I'm putting them in the gutter? Thanks. You made my day.

Ah yes, I remember that famous bible quote:

And Jesus said unto the crowd; When you see a poor man on the roadside, do not share with him your money or your possessions, for there is a chance that he is just lazy or foolhardy. And 25% of them are probably from another land and therefore undeserving of the charity of the true people of God. Instead you should ignore the plight of the poor man even if he is genuinely stricken with poverty, because compassion is not worth as much as money. Praise be the lord.

To be honest, I was never convinced that that was a true bible quotation because it doesn't fit with everything else Jesus said, such as giving away all your possessions and doing good works for those in need. Plus, it seemed to be written with a blue biro.

The key word there being "charity". Not stealing from people.

Didn't Jesus also say

“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s, and unto God the things that are God’s”

which means that Christians should pay taxes.
