the needs of the many! health care

No they don't. I don't see hordes of people from other Western countries wanting to live in the USA.

For example

Australians living in EU countries - 416,942 (of whom 220,000 live in the UK)

Australians living in North America - 131,630 (of whom 42,000 live in Canada).

Yep, that's why most everyone wants to live here.

Well, compared to a poor third world country America is fantastic, but you're pretty far down the list of developed nations. I doubt there's many Western Europeans dreaming of making a new life for themselves in America.

I believe that the USA has lower taxes than most Western countries.

And, coincidentally enough, those countries with higher tax rates have higher quality of life ratings.

Yep, that's why most everyone wants to live here.

Nope, not true. The US pays the most for health care and has worse outcomes than other countries with UHC.

Health care reform will result in lower costs and savings to both people and gov't.

Here are some things I know:

The WHO rates America's health care system at 37 of 191 -- we come in after Costa Rica.

1 in 6 Americans are uninsured. Thousands more are losing their insurance each week. Of those who do have insurance, about 22% of their claims could be denied. They are at risk of losing their insurance if they lose their jobs, or if they become ill. Insurance premiums are rising fast. Even those who are insured often struggle to pay high co-pays.

The number one cause of personal bankruptcy is medical debt.

A public option would not force people who are happy with their insurance to give it up. A public option would promote competition among insurance companies, and competition is good for consumers. A public option would help to check the immoral practices of insurance companies, like denying coverage to women who have been victims of domestic violence or who are pregnant because those are considered to be pre-existing conditions.

So far the only reasonable (reasonable, but unscrupulous) argument put forth against the public option is the cost. Though the logic there is still somewhat flawed. People are already paying for the uninsured with their own higher insurance rates (the hospitals have to get the money for the uninsured they treat from somewhere, and this is one place).

I also know that I am uninsurable. I have type 1 diabetes and bipolar disorder, too many points against me. Right now I'm suffering severe withdrawal because I've chosen to stop treating my bipolar, and coming off the meds isn't easy. It's not a choice I wanted to make, but I can afford to continue taking psych meds or insulin -- not both. I know I'm biased because of my personal experience. I also know that were I perfectly healthy, had my mother not gone bankrupt when I was 12 because she couldn't afford my hospital bills (even with insurance), had I not lived half my life as personal witness to the injustice of the American medical system as it stands, I would still find those opposed to a public option morally deficient, appalling, and truly the scum of the earth.

No. The USA has the best health care and finest doctors in the world and it's not even close. I do agree we need to reign in cost and increase availability though.

No, it doesn't.

Keep dreaming. Oh, and I'm sorry about us scum of the earth folks being too morally deficient to pay for YOUR health care.

Matthew 25:34-46

34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
