^ I have used a modified spats pattern to create economical boots for costumes over the years. They are quite easy to make really. It is nothing more than a two seams, some heaming and elastic. Of course adding additional details will make them more complex, especially the buttoned ones.

I think "pince-nez" have found glory again due to Morpheus of The Matrix. I love them in theory but fear my nose my complain.
Personally I'd prefer a lorgnette and to complete the look, a huge martini and a wrap with an animal's head on it
Exciting update on the tailcoat lining stupid adventure...
It is 23.12 and it has taken me over 300 years to make this lining for this coat...
Ok it's Christmas Eve and obviously I didn't manage the time extremely well to finish the project. But, but, but I was busy working and flaming son never disappeared for days as normal and kept staying in. Damn snow, damn MSN, damn sandwich toaster
I am so nearly there ~ lining fits (to my great astonishment) and is all sewn in but just needs a few finishing touches.
I have given up for now as too tired and don't want another 2am finish. So coat is wrapped up in the Christmas box, enclosed in tissue paper (to hide the mistakes) and if it doesn't fit him I'm going to cut one of his arms off so it does
Will post photos of his either 'tremendously grateful', 'dreadfully disappointed' or 'humouring my mother' face in due course!
And everyone was right ~ it is a dreadfully difficult thing to do. Really just buy a new coat

Oh Snow, how I really wish that could be true
As you can see from the time of post I did indeed stay up and finish off coat. My fingers got slippery, my eyes got weak, my wine bottle got emptier ~ but the spirit of Christmas saw me through and I knew I would not be able to sleep without doing it!
God sometimes I hate being a Mum!

Thankfully son loved it ~ it was a dropped jaw 'Oh My God' moment when he opened the box. So here it is...
And although we got very odd looks taking photos of him in the copse ~ here it is on...
It is a tad 'snug' and he desperately needs other clothes to go with it ~ Holdy your advice would be appreciated, I was thinking pinstripe trousers?
But it does go to show, that at any age, there is magic is giving a Christmas present that is so joyfully received

That lining looks absolutely luxurious. I have a wool coat that needs the lining replaced but I would never dare undertake such a job... you seem to have done a pro job.

It's so not perfect but you'll be dazzled by the colour not the stitchwork! And after Man and Mum told him how many hours it had taken he is grateful or dead ~ oh reminds me of a band

. Son just asked permission to go out in it to meet friends. First I'm delighted he wanted to show it off and second that he asked if it was ok to wear it or was it 'just for special occasions'!
As much as I complain about him he is a good chap and the huge hug he gave me was worth every minute.

In an alternative universe ~ Man is extremely pleased with the £2 fingerless gloves I got off Ebay for him! This year I totally rock at presents!

Traditionally, of course, tailcoats are part of white tie, so would be paired with a white waiscoat, shirt and bow-tie and black trousers with twin stripes up the outseam of the legs. That form of dress is pretty much reserved to diplomatic functions these days, so unless your son gets invites to Royal Banquets and the like, a more relaxed interpretation would be required.
Modern spins on traditional outfits aren't really my forte (I'm a traditional fuddy-duddy at heart), but I'd have thought sticking with dark/rich colours for the shirt, adding in a waistcoat of some description, and some mid or charcoal grey chalkstripe or pinstripe trousers should do the trick.
If I were going to wear something like that, I'd probably go with black skinny jeans and a snug white v-neck t-shirt and white silk scarf to off-set the formality of it. I could see him going on a night out with his friend's like that... maybe he'll start a fad with them.
