The music on Star Trek Discovery

It's not very easy to hum. I can't really make out a central theme. Contrast that with the themes of Game of Thrones, all the other Trek series (even Enterprise!), and this one is kind of hard to grapple or grasp.

Other than that? Nicely arranged, and sounds very professional. The lack of a core melody seems to be intentional. Which I find a bit sad, but I can certainly live with it!

It actually sounds like a particular cheesy 80s theme song because the composer, Dennis McCarthy, wrote the theme to this:

Not to be outdone, Bill Conti knocked off the Williams Superman theme for the show's spinoff:

Someone's got their wires crossed. Dennis McCarthy had nothing to do with writing the theme for Dynasty. It was all Bill Conti's work - he was the 'go to' guy if you wanted either a grand, sweeping orchestral theme or a particularly cheesy one in the '80s, doing Dynasty, The Colbys, Falcon Crest and Cagney & Lacey among others.

As for Discovery's theme, it's fine. Nothing particularly memorable, but nothing aurally offensive either. The callbacks to TOS in the opening notes are nice, and the use of the standard Trek fanfare at the end works quite well.

No texture or contrast.. No counterpoint. The hook is predictable and safe--slow and meandering.

A good piece of music should be instantly unforgettable. But to do that it needs to possess the melodic qualities to do that. This has none of those. A good marker for a song (of any kind) is hear it once and then be able to hum it back a few days later.

This just doesn't have that. Take any other classic Trek theme--from any of the series or Goldsmith's stuff or Horner's and even Giacchino's--I'd bet just about anyone can hum them from memory cold. This doesn't have that quality because it's just too much like other stuff. Look at all the examples of "Sounds like X." There's nothing about it that sets it apart from the pack.

It's just another uninspired, cautious, and homogenized crumb from the production department. I swear, this show has no fucking identity.

ETA: I'll even add "Faith..." to the mix. You may not like her music, but Warren is a master at writing a good, memorable hook. And techniques, principles, and guidelines for writing a pop song are the same for writing a classical piece.

Meh.

It sounds like it belongs in one of the old Activision Trek video games.

I think this really needs some visuals to it. I must admit, the more I listen to it, the less enthusiastic I've become... and it is very rare for me to say something negative about Trek in general or DSC in particular. I loved it at first, but I thought the piece was just too deep for me to grasp at once, and that I would 'get' it on more listens. But the opposite happened to me... I realized there is -melodically- very little depth, I would even go as far in saying it really has no melody, it's more rhythmic progression based on two notes. I kind of feel bad about it, 'cause I had such high hopes. But... I have to put faith in the people involved, and I must accept that this is what they wanted for a main theme. I am hoping that with the proper visuals, it will fall into place, and that the series' score will be melodic and contain the melodies I miss now in the main theme... Cause I would rather have a series with awesome music throughout and a less that stellar main theme, than a series with a kick-ass theme and a mediocre score...

Which would be any of the three 24C series.

But even then, as bland as they were, McCarthy horns are instantly recognizable as '90s Star Trek.' It was the franchise's musical identity at the time.

I'm thrown by the decision to start with the tip of the hat to the Courage theme. That theme is so iconic, so dramatic, so unembarrassedly bold that it sets up an expectation for what's to follow -- an expectation that isn't realized. There's nothing wrong with a more muted, ominous theme, but juxtaposing the two makes for a jumble. To my ears, anyway.

I'm kinda meh about the theme, liked some parts, other parts felt stodgy. My ten-year old remarked twice that he liked it.

A new news article has been published at TrekToday:

In a new video, Trek fans can see Star Trek: Discovery Composer Jeff Russo leading a sixty-piece orchestra who are recording the...

Hmmmm. I'd say that's a 6 out of 10. Don't dislike it, but it doesn't strike me as particularly amazing, or an instant classic like some of the JJTrek themes. I'll have to see it in context. I definitely hear HBOs influence there.

By the way, I want a job where you can wear Vulcan ears to work and no-one thinks it's unprofessional.

Seeing reactions online now of goose bumps induced by the theme, and I must admit, that happened to me twice as I was driving. Softie<--

I was underwhelmed by both the DS9 and Voyager themes when I first heard them, and I grew to like them to an extent, without ever thinking either were terrific. I get a much better sense of this new theme, it's more exciting and less drawn out than those.

I listened to it on my break at work and my colleague said my face lit up in amazement - I honestly got shivers at how perfect it sounded with the fanfare. Clearly room for a narrative too - wonder if that's the trailer we got a few weeks ago.

Someone should mention to Russo it's "Star Trek", not "Star Track"! Otherwise, sounds good -- love the Courage fanfare at the end.
