The music on Star Trek Discovery

I've listened to it a few times, and I am not sure how I feel. One time through I feel it is lacking something, and the next time I am completely engrossed in it, with my heart starting to pound just from listening.

This is how you do a callback.

It should just be an intro to a theme that holds its own, not a crutch.
Whatever we may think of the movie itself, that was some really awesome, memorable theme music for the ages.

Which was my point up thread. No matter the quality of the show/film, you could always count on the theme to be excellent.

I mean, the universal stamp on TFF/INS/NEM has always been: "Well the music was really good..."

i mean, it's better than the theme from p̶a̶t̶c̶h̶ ̶a̶d̶a̶m̶s̶ star trek: enterprise.

I donno... I definitely hear a melody. It's not a bad one, it's just not given much time for exposition to stand rightly on it's own. I definitely think the Courage callbacks take up too much time.

I rather liked it. The callbacks to the original Alexander Courage score were nice, but the segment in the middle was compelling and unique as far as Trek themes go.

Discovery could use some help, so here:

That is by far the least succesful, most boring attempt at this style of music I've ever heard. The DSC theme is way better than that, even with people talking over it.

It's a good piece of music that fits perfectly with a premium television series in 2017. Throw the visuals in there in two weeks time, and you'll have exactly what very other premium show is doing these days: combining mood building music with strong visuals, setting you up for a compelling hour ahead. These kind of shows aren't trying to create theme music that you can sing along to yourself each morning, so let's stop judging Discovery's by that criteria.

I really like the Alexander Courage fanfare but I think the DSC theme leans too much towards it. More than half of the theme consists of the fanfare or a variant at the beginning and at the end. The middle part is similar to some Hans Zimmer works (I hear slight resemblences to "Da Vinci Code" and "Pirates of the Caribbean") but lacks a catchy melody. At the moment when you expect such melody instead the fanfare plays again.

I think the impact of the DSC theme will be very dependend on the pictures it will accompany in the intro. But I for one would have prefered a theme that works on its own. (And I don't know why that should not be a criteria to judge it.)

But but....is it canon and made like in the 60's???
....Hehe oh gods....Basicly I do not care, most Trek music never did anything for me!
Even the old stuff often gets too pompeus and selfimportant...
The Farscape and B5 styles was more to my likings....

The music didn’t blow me away exactly. I think there’s some influence from Game of Thrones. At least that’s how it sounded to me. I’ll make my final judgement in 12 days when I see the whole picture (sound & visuals) of the intro.
