I voted for Friday's Child not because I didn't like it, but because it fit what I thought this concept of "generic" is, it has a Klingon, it has a red shirt death to show how dangerous it is, it has a small village full of people standing in for a planetary population, a people that are aliens but their only difference is their wardrobe and dialogue about 'differences', it has the Enterprise running around, it has action sequences,(good ones, actually) and it has a bit of a joke ending although this one isn't too bad. It very much fits a "generic template".

Yeah. If "generic" means "has a ton of elements in common with other ST episodes, or has a lot of elements emblematic of ST," then Friday's Child is a good choice. It's in my Top 10.

I went with Return of the Archons. It's very much "by the numbers". The crew land on an unknown planet, some important crew member gets captured, alien world looks just like Earth, and Kirk talks a computer to death. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the episode but I's very predictable.

Plus it's a bit frustrating that we didn't see them the first time around.
