I was going to save this for tomorrow, but...

TOS: "All Our Yesterdays"​

I think the author was pondering Earth's eventual demise via supernova, or at least took bits of Earth history, with a few token tweaks, to make it more digestible for non-nerds. Which is okay as nobody really noticed. (Or it's the most novel innovation on "parallel Earth development" made to date.)

It's nice to have a planet again; TOS season 3 often did bottle episodes. Out of necessity, true, and often not unsuccessful.

As usual, Ian Wolfe puts in a sincerity into his character that's nothing short of charming. Nice to see him more as a baddie, albeit of an indirect sort. He's more duty-bound rather than outright villain.

We never meet Zarabeth's foe, which is good. The episode was already cramped for time.

Kirk meeting who isn't the actor who played the Skipper from Gilligan's Island adds a nice moment as well.

Spock clearly devolve due to not being processed, yet McCoy doesn't, and certainly not consistently - though a line to Zarabeth ribbing Spock seems a bit more sharp than usual. That said, he's his real McCoy afterward so I'm going to say that he really didn't devolve. Spock later seems to realize the issue, citing his species' barbaric past - but humans weren't angels thousands of years ago, either. All while this is going on, relatively speaking, Kirk doesn't devolve at all and saying "he's Kirk" or "he's the Shat" or whatever doesn't cut it. It's a large enough of a nitpick, but not dwelling on it helps. The story's more than good enough to roll with it.

The shiny discs people froth over are not DVDs since they're not spinning and, more importantly, there's a built-in viewer mechanism on the thing that DVDs lack.

But all stories have nitpicks. So, does the tone, flow, character drama, situational events, and so on still gel?

You bet your sweet Zorkhan they do and, especially for latter-end season three, the episode proves there's still plenty of life despite the circumstances. It's a great meld of concept sci-fi and emotional-driven character drama; a great balance that doesn't go too far in any one direction. There are lots of neat little scenes that overcome the production's limitations.

TNG "The Defector" may actually be a top-10 Next Generation episode for me. It has a tense cold-war brinksmanship thriller feel to it, while at the same time telling an extremely intimate and effective character story. The performance of James Sloyan as Jarok was absolutely first rate as well, as is Patrick Stewart as Picard's dilemma very much echo's Kirk's from a century earlier in "Balance of Terror."

Wow, my favourite season of TNG goes up strong ones from DS9 and ENT.

TOS VS. VOY for me for the weaker seasons, whilst DIS was somewhere in between.

I'll go be boring and save one of my favourite episodes from DS9, The Die is Cast. It's an excellent follow-up to Improbable Cause, with tense high stakes as the Obsidian Order and the Tal Shiar fighting the Dominion. and the realization at the end that the attack on the Founder Homeworld was a setup.

Garak desperately trying to get Odo to admit something when he was being tortured is still a scene I watch behind my hands.

It's so useful for me to just have a button to press to start some Trek playing right away (if only they'd discover that TOS, DS9, and VOY exist...)

So I'm just going to follow @Seven of Five saving "The Die Is Cast", and I'll save "Improbable Cause." I do often say it's one of Trek's greatest scripts! There is not an off line in the whole thing. The unfolding of the plot is perfectly done and every emotional beat is compelling. It is a script without flaw. (And it doesn't even use the "Part I" cheat, because "The Die Is Cast" doesn't drop the ball. It's always easy to write an incredible Part I, if you free yourself from the burden of landing a satisfying Part II...)

I have twice used "Improbable Cause" to hook DS9 skeptics on the show. Trek fans who had checked out season 1 and 2 back in the day and didn't get it and drifted off. Show them "Improbable Cause", and they're suddenly binging the whole series.

I can't put it on right now, because it's TOO good, I wouldn't get my other stuff done.
