Game The Most Disliked Sixth Season Episode, 2025 Edition

Sacrifice of Angels was a huge episode, ending the Occupation Arc and killing poor Ziyal.

The special effects when they were saving the station were incredible.

"Rascals" is a delightful chapter in the bizarre saga of Miles & Keiko's marriage. Over the course of it, she's aged down, their daughter is aged up, he (mentally) ages decades in a day, they've each been possessed and tormented the other, she had to deal with a replicant him, Rumeplstiltskin tried to steal their child, etc.

I so want to see their marriage counseling sessions.

Nechayev hits both Picard and the scenery home hard by his babysitting the Borg instead of taking a more direct opportunity to hopefully rid the Federation of a genuine and virtually unstoppable (and large) enemy that, by the way, they're still at war with and the Borg declaration of it was fairly pronounced in "The Best of Both Worlds", which didn't end just because Data enabled sleep mode by moving the clock timer forward:

Great stuff, though the idea of giving the Collective a fractal art Escher style painting to be locked into a loop with seemed improbable and dumb at most. Either way, the Borg would have adapted, with the main Collective largely undamaged (as VOY proved), with one, if not or two, splinter groups (such as the one in "Descent").

Not the best music, a big letdown in fact, but it's minimal in the episode, and the new ship design is nothing less than awesome. The Borg discovering art is sadly not to be explored.

Preceding that was a terrific use of Borg referring to others with names and killing mercilessly out of... a warped sense of fun. This story really had potential, making use of Picard's failed idea, especially part one. But, alas, it's season 6 and we get acting more wooden than in a toothpick factory, and droning fart musak and that big reveal at the end with... Lore... who somehow manages to work despite the garish contrivance to get him to say "Hi". Indeed, the Borg would likely go after a planet or base where the Enterprise would be nearest to intervene and it's clear they'd have enough proper revenge material for the story, as opposed to just a bunch of meanderers (hence the idea there may be more than this one group that Lore stumbled upon).

But the ideas central to the story alone are solid and has moments of surprisingly well execution. But still a whimper, even if it makes a lot of season 6 look like a much bigger whimper by comparison.

Great comedy and story for The Doctor. And great realization from Janeway that he just wants to be the best for his crew.

And this episode has a special place in my heart because Robert Picardo actually sang the Vulcan Aria with me when I met him!

Like all the best Trek ROTW's, "Second Chances" figures out a way to use off-screen backstory to sell the romance in a compressed time frame. A beautiful, moving episode. Sometimes I wish they'd gone with their plan to kill Will Riker and replace him on the series with Thomas!

It always made me sad what a bleak ending that character got. I'm so glad that Lower Decks established he was still alive and free from captivity by the time of that series.

DS9 and VOY have some goodies that never get old, but

DS9: "Time's Orphan"

won me over for yet another high-concept idea that outweighs the convenience of planet X having time distortion wibbly Y causing Z plot.

The acting is... phenomenal.

I've not seen it in a while, but I recall that the big moral dilemma overlooked something and had some treknobabble that was woolly, as Molly's life in the other place/dimension was clearly brutal and left her in an unevolved state. Given the circumstances were (a) not her fault, (b) she was caught in the middle, (c) the crew made a mistake, (d) an opportunity existed to get her back at appropriate age, the dilemma felt a bit cod.

Who couldn't shed a tear? (Well, being sci-fi and having to be invested in the plot sorta helps as many audiences wouldn't and sci-fi isn't everyone's cup of tea... and, yeah, a fair amount of the music in this scene makes up for the previous scene's miffy iffiness.)

(Some high concept goodness and I dig the idea of an anthropomorphized visualization of a landscape. How might adults with the right-brain creative ability draw a mountain with a smile?)

Wish I could find the moral argument, as well as the initial scene where lil' Molly goes into planet X's plot pool, but the episode's got plenty of mojo and making a good use of a Trek Trope with Teh Time Travel Tomfooleries(tm).

Like "Second Chances" which I just saved, "Resurrection" also cleverly uses sci-fi devices and backstory to earn emotional investment in a ROTW.

Also, they should have done so much more with Kira vs. Intendant in the MU arc, but at least we had this one rematch between the two of them after "Crossover."

How many more themes can there be jammed into a story and yet it remains watchable:

DS9: "Valiant"

I mean, "David vs Goliath", "Icarus & Daedalus", everyone siding with the jock, said jock also battling internal demons and taking drugs to try to stay calm, Red Squad's the best (just like the Red Kangs from that other franchise), etc, etc, there's a lot in this one. Indeed, the story almost bookends a lost cause (Nog and Jake being chased by a Dominion ship and pounded, followed at the end by Valiant going after a Dominion ship and getting pounded... a little recursive theme never hurts.)

yeah, gotta overlook how they got all the teeniebopper cadets to command a ship that's the same class as the Defiant prototype where moving too fast causes it to fly apart, or they added three more bolts on and called it a day or something... the funny thing is, the teenieboppers in this act more like a crew than a clique compared to the occasional TNG episode involving its bridge crew!

DS9: "The Sound Of Her Voice"

Yeah, there's some Treknobabble involved, but it's still fairly ingenious as far as plot twists and story ideas go.

Debra Wilson (comedienne famous for cable shows, MadTV, et al, who was a big fan so it's great to get her on board) steals the show with a character, during initial viewing, makes you really want TO get saved and to see her meet the crew.

She also gets to do a bit of comedy, which isn't overdone, and both contrasts and complements the story rather nicely.

The fact we never get to SEE her is almost a plus, because it begs a question: Could audiences at the time handle a comic actor appear in a serious role? Based on the debacle of a certain movie ("Flight of The Intruder", 1991) that had to have massive reshoots because everyone burst out laughing when a character came out on screen, believing him to be Al Bundy, the answer is too-often "No". Sadly, with many audiences if not most, typecasting is a problem that can hamper the tone of a film, and "Flight" is an example of one of the worst possible scenarios, in part due to the originality of the Bundy character making it almost inescapable. Definitely was inescapable during the peak of that TV show's ("Married With Children") popularity (1991), and MadTV was still in production. But that just goes to show both Trek's flexibility, creativity, and strength. This episode pretty much rocks.

A shame that the only video clips to be found are the hokey ending with hokey foreshadowing/premonition/yesDaxisobviouslygonnadie/etc

I was very tempted to continue backwards in the Dominion War arc but have deviated to "Who Mourns For Morn". A fun episode in which a regular background character who is supposedly very chatty but who we never see speak, becomes the title character in a episode in which they are presumed dead and almost entirely absent. We learn a lot of extraordinary things about a character who has basically been a running joke to this point. A nice touch - the Bajoran who is invited to "keep Morn's seat warm" is played by the actor who plays..Morn.
