[Summer Solstice]

"We'll Always Have Paris". The special effects were pretty good for the time. We see a side of Picard that we don't usually. I think Jenice may have been Picard's ideal partner: she's clever and interesting but isn't in Starfleet and she doesn't seem to want children. She is definitely long since over him by this point, and he's thinking about what could have been. The fencing scene means this is one of a small number of episodes where we see Picard spending his downtime with members of the crew who aren't the senior staff - "The Big Goodbye" is another one and I think there's another episode where Picard is fencing - in contrast to how he usually seems very distant to the crew.

While, disappointingly, ENT: "Daedalus", wasn't about the Daedalus-class starships, this tale about the inventor of the transporter, and his (and his daughter's) connection with Archer works well. The transporter 'ghost' stretches my suspension of disbelief to breaking point, but I liked the effect and the emotions it brought forth in the characters.
I also like seeing the 'Elite Observation Vessel' again, this time up close, and it got a name: Sarajevo

Another charming story despite some grandiose oversimplification of ideas (and "very 60s" in its approach, wave your big green translucent hand if you agree and without saying "Hulk happy *grunt*!" ) story since there's no way anyone would attempt the same tropes identically today (especially with Trelane's parents being the cringiest aspect about TOS and all), though I'd dare any modern day show to not just reproduce the simplicity of many TOS episodes, but to also show the old deities closer to their truer states from what historians can tell - which means an inevitable disclaimer for the squeamish (regardless of which side of the camera they're on... )

I've a soft spot for this one. Not that spot since I'm not yet of the age where those little pills are needed, but because there is something alluring about "the simple life"- until you realize all of the nuances behind what made it simple aren't as possible anymore, and were honestly never really that simple despite the surface-level veneer of it all. The episode even distracts from every possible exploration of depth by having Kirk be a stubborn stick - oh, I'm sure he knows all of the nuances, but without a little exploration then he'd better be as entertaining as Q-- oh yeah, Q often pulls that omnipotence stunt too and Kirk's just a walking two-by-four plank in this one. I'd also bet Q will never need any of those pills to remain omnipotent...

Notice that this story covers some of the same themes as "The Way to Eden", albeit loosely, regarding the ostensible debate over "living with technology" versus "herding goats and playing music and smoking up various forms of grass and weeds all day". Except "Eden", shoving in too much and not doing anything with its ideas either, deliberately made a snark ending to neatly kill off half of them... whereas Apollo is just a raving egoist and - let's face it - not unjustly so, who'd be genuinely kind to his subjects, as long as they sing and dance and get on their knees for him once done tending to the fields by the river* and so on... Okay, maybe he's a little fickle but if variety is the spice of life and everyone gets a turn then I doubt many would actually complain. So that's the real issue, Kirk was just jealous? (He has no need to be, we've all read the memes... )

* for one person, a garden of 3000 square feet and more is needed to raise enough crops for a year... and how much time it takes. If you can wade through the Kentbrockmanesque treacle, you'll realize those little herb gardens on your windowsill don't even amount to enough for even an anthill colony...

And until there's a time machine where we can go back and observe and directly write down their society's methodologies and beliefs since there's no proven consensus just yet (not even the Greeks as to what the believed Apollo was able to do), it makes more sense just to lean on some of the known theories, of which some I like:

Granted, posting a dozen links to a bunch of boring history sites isn't as fun, and some of those other sources mannerisms and even theories on what their deities and societies were like have aspects even my ex wouldn't believe despite his understandable romanticizing, which I can't oddly blame him for... (But given human evolution requiring the eons it took and all, some of it probably wouldn't be giant a surprise for me either... would be for him and he wouldn't like it...)

Which may be the point of the episode - are the deities of yesterday really outdated, regardless of how the society works? Even Kirk mentions "we find the one as adequate" with a veneer of possible sarcasm. The question is, is he right since DS9 offers, in its own way, a more resounding "Nope!" since nobody is acting all Peakirky on them, thankfully. Peacocky? Kirky? It's all good...
