Taking out DS9, Season 4: Rules Of Engagement

A reasonably entertaining courtroom drama, which I think can be a nice change of pace, since we don't get to see them that often- even if they're usually mostly bottle shows, we still get to see the cast in roles that are different from their usual ones (i.e. as witnesses). Also, it's one where we get to see how devious Klingons really can be (in the form of that advocate Ch'Pok), which is something we don't get to see too often in Berman Era Trek.

[Oddish]

The Bajoran coup three-parter was a really good story, and laid the groundwork for DS9's trend toward serialization. Lee Nollis was a great character, a man who found himself in the unenviable position of being revered for something he never did. So, "The Homecoming" is removed.

Another episode that isn't perfect, but is by no means the worst from this list, is:

TOS, Season 3: "The Paradise Syndrome"

The idea of The Preservers is pretty cool, Margaret Armen (as usual) writes some decent Spock/McCoy dialogue, and this episode's ending has got to be the grimmest in all of TOS - it's also the third confirmed time that Kirk oinked (or twice, prior to TWOK... so the meme stands, even if my earlier count was off by one...) Granted, I wish more of the episode was good as the ending would have more impact, but the acting and screen chemistry of Shatner and Scharf make up for it. Which is saying something.

The Enterprise trying to alter an asteroid's trajectory or split it or whatever it takes before the pizza gets there* is also good, but the episode relies on so many coincidences that it's hard to keep suspension of disbelief going at times... that and, being season 3, even the writers were locked in "kirk.Spock.McCoy mode" as if the other characters were just two-legged props and it's only one of the big three that figures it out, despite the number of experts the ship ostensibly carries to handle any number of problems...

* or, rather, there becomes pizza... or a really big pancake

Also, is this story a possible influence on "The Inner Light"? (Weird alien space probe thingy alter's captains mind. Captain lives another life full of bliss and oinky-oink. Something big and tragic happens at the end because the end credits roll in 1 minute, 47 seconds...)

It doesn't have a great rep, but I do enjoy "New Ground." One of the first Trek eps I saw. Nice balance of personal A story with ship jeopardy B story.

Also, too bad no one in Disco's future thought of picking up this soliton wave technology post-Burn! Could have solved a lot of problems for everyone.

I suppose I should save DS9, Season 1: “Babel”, seeing as I'm the only one here who actually likes the episode. It's got Odo and Quark running Ops and trying to keep the station from blowing up! It's got the heroes failing to cure the virus and Kira literally kidnapping someone else to save them! It's good TV!

Alright, so I'm that 'Mudd' guy. Mudd's Passion. A strong instalment for TAS. Lovely to get Carmel back. A rogue love potion on the Enterprise. That's a perfect set up for 25 minutes of animation.

"The Time Trap" had just about enough plot for an animated episode -- which, luckily, it was! -- and used a very Trekkish theme: "we must cooperate to achieve our goals." Nice to see Kirk's old nemesis Kor show up, though it would have been even nicer if Kor had been voiced by John Colicos, or at least looked more like him. (Though perhaps it they didn't use Colicos's voice, or at least tossed him a few bucks. they couldn't use his likeness? I dunno.)

Some episodes of modern Trek can be accused of dragging the season arc out in order to reach an episode count, but not DIS, Season 2: "Light And Shadows". It's like they took two Burnham stories and a Pike story and squeezed them into one regular-sized episode. They even found time to have Pike and Tyler fight a tentacle robot from the future, while Georgiou and Burnham had a fake fight on a Section 31 ship. It worked for me!

The Icarus Factor has some decent scenes between Riker and his father, but the episode is much better when it focuses on Worf.

The episode almost certainly doesn't deserve it, but I will save "The Omega Glory" for the sheer cheesetasticness of the whole thing. For a Canadian actor proclaiming the glory of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution to a roomful of savage "Yankees" and primitive "Communists" in a case of "Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planet Development" dialed up to 11 in a way that made even adolescent me goggle at the utter absurdity. This is just cheesy McCheese with a side of cheese, and can I have some more cheese with that, please? This episode gets a save for sheer audacity -- and I will probably hate myself for it in the morning!

I bet the rest of the cast were jealous of De Kelley, who got perhaps the only decent line in the script: "I've found that evil is often victorious unless good is very, very careful."

I just watched it a couple of days ago and it was kind of a badly edited mess... but it ended with McCoy and Sulu having a picnic with Alice, the White Rabbit and a giant two-headed fire-breathing dragon, so it's clearly of greater value than the other three stories.

You know what, after a litle research I've discovered that I like more in "Profit & Lace" than I do in "Terra Nova" (In fact, I probably should have saved it before "Second Sight"). There are some great lines and scenes in P&L (like the relief of Quark and Rom when they discover that Zek is alive and Ferenginar hasn't been invaded by the Dominion), and if only that last scene of Quark going after Aluura had been cut, the episode would have ended with him having learned something about what it's like to be a woman, and been much less bad for it.

So, our 'winner' is ENT: "Terra Nova" (sorry Trip - even you on a horse couldn't save this one )
