Game The Most Disliked Recycled Title Episode

I've been saving a lot of Streaming Trek, and I'm going to keep at it. "Anomaly" by Disco. This one was pretty dead-on as well. Great character work, nice tension building.

I am slightly surprised that it is the only EXACTLY reused title in the 850-ish eps so far. Throw a "The" up there, people! "The Anomaly"! Done!

I'm going to save "Project Daedalus", as it's one of my favourite episodes of Discovery's second season, which is my favourite season of Discovery. It's a bit of the shame that the unusual focus on one of the bridge crew was telegraphing their inevitable demise, but it was nice while it lasted. Plus I liked the daring run through a minefield where Burnham's epiphany and the combined efforts of the bridge crew... leads to them basically hitting every mine along the way. Can't win them all I guess.

"The Vengeance Factor" I love how powerfully they distill the essence of the 80's into this one. Every detail is so delightfully 80's!

Apropos, as it was the very last episode to air in 1989. Sending the decade off with style.

Gonna go new-school again and take out "Terror Firma." Some interesting character revelations about the crew, as well as some character development: Dal shows signs of actually becoming a captain, and poor Gwyn gets hit with a painful home truth that shifts her allegiances. We learn more about the unique nature of the Protostar, and there's a delightful scene where Hologram Janeway gets to "clean house."

The Vengeance Factor" I love how powerfully they distill the essence of the 80's into this one. Every detail is so delightfully 80's!

I would have saved that one long ago if not for the obvious alternatives to the ending (Tackle Yuta. Stun Yuta a few more times. Beam Yuta to the brig. Beam the other guy to safety. Beam Yuta to Riker's quarters).

My next save is Starship Mine. While it would have been better with Worf and a lot more bad guys, Die Hard on a starship is going to be good no matter what. Plus, Data does small talk.

PRO, Season 1: "First Con-tact" because I really liked the design of the alien species the crew makes first contact with. One of the great things about these animated series is that they can really showcase alien aliens, instead of a human with something stuck on their nose.

The ep is a good introduction to the prime directive for young viewers, and I also, the Janeway disappointed-mommy dress down when Daw and co screwed up.

TNG, Season 2: "A Matter Of Honor"

This one is "TNG season 2 meets Aftersk00l special", but it largely keeps the mystique set up in "Heart of Glory", as well as exploring the Klingons without getting cheesy or diminishing them - something TNG would end up doing in later years, but revitalizing in DS9 because DS9 allowed much more leeway in where they could take things, and with more depth than a veneer of rubber stamp meme too.

I forgot the Benzite's name, but while he wasn't paying attention in class, Picard could have been less than a rabid donkey in his response. Especially if they're trying to show the differences between both empires.

Riker is the perfect candidate to go, and even gets to be captain of the Klingon ship - woohoo!

Wasn't the Klingon captain also one of the Pakleds? :D Actually, I recall he certainly proved himself as a good character actor in doing both roles...

Ga'gH is cool. And best when served live. The robins and sparrows would agree with that... But a human eating it might possibly gag then sig'H too... But that's the other thing; not all foods can be eaten by all species. Dr Pulaski alludes to this in another episode where she has a tea ceremony with Worf in what's a cool scene and she preemptively prepares an antidote for herself. Crusher would never do this, which is okay but this exemplifies to me why Pulaski is the better Doctor. She's clinical, has her ducks in a row, has empathy just like Crusher but takes it to the next level, and so on. But back to the main point - if you don't think all foods are compatible, look up how you don't give a dog any chocolate. Which is fatal, but lots of articles on mal-nourishment can stem from eating only the wrong foods not designed for you... which reminds of yet another tangent (I'm loaded with all those sorts of things), it was also pretty ballsy in 1988 to do the dining hall scene.

Definitely a must-see TNG episode. One day I'll remember the episode that started with the "Klingon Tea Ceremony" too... the dialogue was a tad simplistic, but the story's actions more than made up for it.

Mudd's Women. I know it's a dodgy choice, and I know all the reasons that it's morally terrible, and I agree... But in the right mood and on the right day I can appreciate it as a bit of hopelessly out of step period TV Sci-fi. They knew not what they did. Mudd is gud.

TOS, Season 3: “Wink Of An Eye”

is next for me. The idea of multiple time continuities was not often explored back then and might even be the first. Haven't really looked, but either way it's a pretty nifty idea. Of this story, Tron, Tron Legacy, and Blink of an Eye, only the original Tron and Blink don't commit the continuity problem of how to tie in events from the faster timeline into the real timeline. (Tron keeps them separate, Blink mindfully crafts its story around a different set of events while namedropping its influence, all to great effect. And what @Captain's Coffee said earlier.)

The episode's title alludes to the different time continuities, in relation to those in the slower timeline noting what is missed if they wink at the faster one. Probably. There's also one commercial break scene that confirms that Kirk made the meme for real, at least twice. Blink and you'll miss it, but the second known instance is confirmed by the presence of David Marcus as being mentioned as being his son...

That said, many inventions and products start out basic and ideas and solutions per the original invention not seen at the time (never mind script deadlines and such). Either way, this episode is a standout for sci-fi and Trek's third season and definitely had an influence on sci-fi long after it aired and to great effect. Am surprised it's not attempted more often, but gems like "Blink" are rare.

Back to "Wink" again, I won't discuss the biological impact of damaged cells, since any number of things cause damage all the time. Especially by friction, which opens up the blood stream for infections to waltz right on in, so either which way Kirk would have ended up dead in a blink of an eye after that wink of Deela's eye. Oops... Sheesh, the one week I opted to stay awake during biology class...

Nevermind, I'll save LDS: "Second Contact" because it is the first episode (although not the best) of my favourite Trek series! And Rutherford gets to strike a cool 'phasers-on-stun' pose as he manages a date and an infestation of rage zombies.

Ditto.

Carmel is quick to make Mudd iconic. (Though DSC's incarnation of Mudd is pretty cool in my book too.)

Eve's speech at the end is definitely having to appease the censors ( :( ), but within it are the forward-thinking ideas trying to get out. It's a bit of a stretch to try.

That, and the anti-drug message is a little woolly as the beauty bestowed is shown on screen as being literal rather than metaphorical. (The ending where Eve takes a placebo gelatin yet she's still purdied up doesn't make any sense either.) Mudd gives a Muddy speech about what he thinks the drug does, for laypersons' terms - I'd guess. If Spock was standing with them, he'd probably go all Sheldon and say how the drug exudes a huge cloud of pheromones to make the other people respond, or whatever. (The fact the story still hinges on physical appearance as being the one-and-only thing*, which seems as relevant today, is also disheartening...)

But this one's more clear cut when it comes to 60s censorship and how only the men:

COMPUTER: No decipherable reading on females. However, unusual reading on male board members. Detecting high respiration patterns, perspiration rate up, heartbeat rapid, blood pressure higher than normal.

The law of probability is that there'd be at least one woman who would react like many of the men, and not all men would react as strongly to their presence.

* The script oversimplifies way too much, but the basic message of appreciating a real person and working together as equals could have been a bit tighter in the script, which hints at it- but not anywhere near perfectly so. If only the script focused on that instead of "you were made into something you weren't by a drug so the marriage is a fraud" -- the episode is a mishmash of ideas that ends up poorly. The anti-drug message some two decades early is a nice bonus, but - as with the story itself - is superficial and as such solipsistic...

Carmel truly saves the day for this story, a story that could have been more and how much of it was due to not wanting to upset audiences and how much the scriptwriter was cramming in too much for its own good without ironing out the rough edges...

"The Alternative Factor" was pretty confusing, but it did have Robert Brown, who, despite the dodgiest beard this side of Dodge*, made a good case for totally being the guy you wanted if you needed an actor who could veer between painful sincerity and complete over-the-top madness in the same episode. And the ending bordered on tragic, with the only solution being alt-Lazarus making a heroic sacrifice.

*Dodge the city, not Dodge the astronaut in Planet of the Apes (1968). Dodge the astronaut had a proper beard.

Choosing ST, Season 2: "Children Of Mars"
Off-the-beaten path episode; different is good.
Successfully evokes the tone of the seismic shift in life that can result from an unforeseen major attack, when the relatively petty concerns are just melted away.
Given our generation, undoubtedly 9/11 is the reference point.

I'm going to save DIS, Season 2: "Brother", for introducing us to Jett Reno and Anson Mount's Pike, and for being a pretty decent episode as well. I was hoping that Discovery would take a turn towards being more fun in its second year and Brother gave me just what I wanted.

"The Trouble With Edward" is a delightful Short Trek, probably the best one? The craziest thing is how effortlessly it weaves it's absurd story into existing continuity. I never expected a real explanation of how the Klingon/Tribbles conflict came to be!

I love the moment in these games when the ginormous long list has suddenly reached a length where the whole thing can fit on the screen without any scrolling needed.
