Game The Most Disliked Of The Least Disliked Champions, 2025 Edition

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm going to follow up on my last post and save ENT: "In A Mirror, Darkly, Part II" - mainly for the same reasons as before, but also the Defiant is AWESOME and Empress Sato even more so!

How to one-up a big unstoppable? Why, make a bigger unstoppable stopping the big stoppable and place bets as to how long before they get diluted!

VOY: "Scorpion, Part I" (2021)

After TNG's arc ended and the big-screen flick "First Contact" watered down the Borg as a big budgeted gimmick, the franchise had two choices, of which one would become inevitable, but that was not the immediate choice taken. The choice taken at this point was to do a big shake-up with a new enemy that the Borg could not defeat or assimilate, all while returning the Borg to their origins of feeling like a Collective again, a la its original premise. And what better place than the Delta Quadrant, because if anybody were to say the Borg were created by humans and that their leader was actually Mr Rogers, nobody's going to believe you. Dang, I need to rewatch this one again.

VOY was shrewd and thoughtful in how they would utilize the Federation's big bad wolf (not 359). Indeed, there is even some rivalry between Janeway and Chakotay that sweetens the pot and the plot.

Now I use "thoughtful", even though the 2-parter is still more spectacle and a little gimmicky, as Species 8472 really feels more like a gimmick, in their own fluidic space that somehow opens into ours without causing a big puddle anywhere. It's still, IMHO, better than STFC was and it was a gamble. Plus, there's no Queen in this one either and everyone acts as if there's no such thing as a Queen. At least, for now.

Part two and the handling of Seven is really well done, with no easy solution for the Borg menace, while continuing to successfully sell Borg as a genuine threat, with a conclusion that satisfied.

There's also a need to mention John Rhys-Davies, who generally looks for roles he can relish, and really sells holographic character DaVinci, who is surprisingly integral to the plot, what with the line "When one's imagination cannot provide an answer, one must seek a greater imagination" and, indeed, VOY resurrecting the Borg gave them a whole new life, on multiple fronts - but more on that later... plus, nice since Picard uttered "merde" in early-TNG did we get a non-English real life naughty phrase quietly woven in: "Che cazzo". Which, loosely translated, means "what the F-word" (or "What the hell", but that's a bit merde, innit?).

Speaking of fronts, along with making the Borg the Borg again, which is impressive as nothing really compared to TNG's first two stories in crafting this big bad of a threat. We get a fresh take on deborgifying someone and helping them to reclaim humanity as a contuining saga or character arc. Someone who was integrated into the Collective for decades, and this opened up a TON of narrative possibilities for both this new character (7 of 9), crew interactions (good and bad), as well as exploring the Borg even more... Humanizing 7 was the better of the two continual themes but, for a while, the Borg remained fairly strong - but would finally became fragile paperweights complete with centralized systems for quick'n'easy plot victories, but in VOY's run that hasn't happened yet. This story just paves the way for new adventures, and where they took those hadn't happened yet. It's so well done that it can't be the bottom of any list.

(Footnote: There's a reason "Q Who" is not the better of the two of these remaining Borg stories, which I do place higher than the others, having sat here drinking a cup of coffee mixed with caffeine-plus cola because I don't drink booze anymore. My ex did, likely still does, but I'll explain later why "Q Who" is, of these four TV episodes, last place (which isn't terrible since they're all good-to-great)...)

(Sadly, in amongst the memberberries Janeway belts out, the logs don't mention the scooped outposts prior to Q flinging anyone anywhere, and the big sweeps week retcon in ENT based somewhat on STFC hadn't been scripted yet.)

DRAMA! And it's not the only bit of great scenes in this! :luvlove:

One of many great Borg moments and it's neat how they are already tinkering with augmenting the USS Voyager ship. Indeed, "Q Who" even seeded a possibility about exploring relations one day, and "Scorpion" is the best possible result.

I'm saving Rememberance. I remember so clearly the tangible palpible excitement as the premier of Picard loomed and for me it did not disappoint, seeing a Federation in a new state following the war and the devastation of the supernova and the synth attack we saw it less through the perfect peacetime lens of TNG and more through what we learnt it to be in DS9. Seeing Picard himself face this new paradigm expecting the halcyon days of old and finding that the world has moved on was such a good decision. The show was always at its best being itself, measured nostalgia and a whole new story.

The production's the thing...

TNG: "Q Who" (2021, 2023)

The story that introduces the Borg is indeed strong, but could be a little stronger. Still, given the turmoil behind the season's making, and in the context of television of the time, this is still far better than most sci-fi of the time. Or even normal shows, swap a big roving cube with a bunch of people going to an abandoned factory and finding something big and scary there. It's all good!

To be quick, the Borg are introduced, are given the link to the cause of the Federation outposts being scooped up (shhh, don't mention all the Romulan ones though), and then put aside when the real story - Q not micromanaging Picard and letting him ask for help with some dignity - finishes, all in the snap of two fingers and a quip.

There is some residual clunky dialogue littered here or there, the best one being "The captain is not on the ship".

A couple scenes needed reshoots as Guinan isn't even touching the keypad, and as she could also see the detail-rich big cube from the Ten-Forward window, why wander into a small room with computer screen?

The Borg also are fond of 5.25" disk drive bezels. Actually, they're a neat way to add some detail and they're not always noticed for what they were. Especially with 3.5" drives new on the market and either a factory overproduced or they went to a junkyard and found a ton of them to make use of, they really DO work and add a nice touch to give the look of utility rather than having blank walls, so don't get me wrong. :D

They even have a logo, which isn't often seen and not really scene after this story until "Descent", which raises questions - some of them being potentially good too as why they'd develop one and keep it around, even subtly without pomp until after Picard bestows individuality upon them and now you see it everywhere, but I digress.

For some reason, Engineering has a food replicator so anyone can order hot chocolate and then say "Durrh, I shouldn't have this here", then spill the liquid as a reminder as to why you don't serve hot beverages in that area in the first place, then use your hands because you didn't replicate a sponge and pat-dry the (likely higher-up) officer with. And yet, nobody gave a hoot about the carpeting that surely got stained. Oh well, at least this is only hot chocolate and not Riker's portable beacon set to "UV mode".

Granted, the Borg carve up a bit of the "D" in what looks like a very expensive scene, and the Borg doing this is what finally gives them enough information to finally decide to haul their collective heiney over to the Federation founding planet - Earth, in sector zero zero one* - next season. (Just scooping up outposts from the previous episode they're referenced in would only tell so much. It's an outpost. With an outhouse. Ever been to an outhouse? They don't tell much, thankfully say even less - not even the ones that have a bunch of "Dizzy Daisies" on the walls or seat cover because that was deemed art. Remember those things? They were vinyl hippie flower stickers popular in the late-1960s into the 70s, for which some come in a hue that glows under, you guessed it, UV light. )

A shame TNG's other Borg stories didn't make this list as, nitpicks and related issues aside, they dared to tell interesting ideas and not just trying to do a retread or hodgepodge of derivative ideas with a pinch of small universe building. That's saved for 1996, also now remembering that when you have a composer creating an iconic score and theme for an iconic baddie that's soooo good, please keep 'em!

* Because sector eight six seven five three oh nine isn't as interesting unless your name is Jenny and she's rightly more interested in hightailing out of there, only the eighties would do so many songs about what's otherwise creepy. As it's still early in the morning, I'm also hungry like a wolf but for this there's some cabbage and sausage left over in the fridge. Left over isn't synonymous with "regurgitated" either, but I digress before I digest, noting the other handful of early-eighties creepy stalky song titles just didn't fit into this pre-caffeinated stream of consciousness. Thank goodness.

What's left, between high concept sci-fi and an awesome character piece,

VOY: "Blink Of An Eye" (2017)

wins my latest vote. It uses "Wink of an Eye" (TOS) as inspiration, but does something proper new with it AND gets around the two-timeline disparity with relative ease. It's a rock solid sci-fi yarn that might have worked in TNG, but feels far more at home here with VOY. (Okay, a lot of TNG post-"The Naked Now" did occasionally look for inspiration, but didn't just do an outright remake-scribble of it and the quality of those not-remake stories is so much higher...)

Plus, it's got Olaf Pooley in it. What's really not to like? Well, if anything, the coy dialogue about the EMH needing companionship has jussssssst enough inflection to hint at something other than just being buddies at the bar belching brewskies brazenly.

Where have all the TNGs gone? You might conclude that the surviving shows were statistically better, or worse. The perils of omitting the most liked from the lesser-liked.

As I perceived it, the best of the best still has the least-best of the best, so we're voting for what we like most of this list and what's left is more or less the least-liked of the most-liked. TNG generally is more warmly received, so it makes sense they'd all be transported off the list the first. At least in this game format, as individual episodes go, for example, "Blink of an Eye" I'd put above a fair number of TNG episodes, but that's just me.
