The Most Disliked Episode of DS9, Season 7: 2021 Edition...

You just beat me to saving "Shadows", another one I liked. So, I'll save Badda Bing, Badda Bang, our last "fluff" episode before the final push. I think the issue with Sisko was solved a bit too quickly, but the final sequence was cool, and the duet with Vic and Sisko was a treat.

Saving "BADDA-BING, BADDA-BANG". I know it's silly because even if they have to be "period specific" they could just get a couple of machine guns, while Vic is in his room, and shoot the whole gang who wouldn't be able to shoot back because of safeties...

Saving "EXTREME MEASURES"... No comment on account of people posting like crazy monkeys....

Edit: Added "Afterimage" that got lost in the mix.

I was thinking Badda Bing Badda Bang next. Not quite as solid as Take Me Out to the Holosuite, but still lots of fun.

I'll save Penumbra next. It's basically setup for what's to come later, but it's better than what's left.

"Covenant" is a prime example of fun guilty pleasure Trek. This episode is so whacked out in the most delightful way!

I kind of wish this had been reworked to become the climax for Dukat, given the misfire of his final arc.

I always really liked "COVENANT". Great look at how religion can be easily used for bad.

Saving "WHEN IT RAINS..." next. Still a solid entry in the final arc. It had the unenviable task of keeping things going after "THE CHANGING FACE OF EVIL" and being directly before "TACKING INTO THE WIND". Did a great job. And of course, Garak was in it.

It's a shame that Covenant was the last Kira/Dukat story. She really should have been an instrument in his eventual downfall, and with none of the Pah-wraith rubbish.

I will save Afterimage next. The Garak scenes save it from being a total snoozefest, even if Ezri trying to work out what was wrong with him was basic.

Saving EMPEROR'S NEW CLOAK. It has a few laughs, like carrying the cloaking device, and I tend to see Rom's confusion as commentary on how silly the mirror universe is.

PRODIGAL DAUGHTER

I understand that this story was pitched very late after a Sisko time travel story did not come together. However, the drama is languid, the acting uninspired. It just doesn't seem to have the energy of bad DS9. It just exists.

I can appreciate that bad episodes try to say something. This one does not try at all.

Yes, agreed. While New Cloak is one of the weakest Mirror Universe entries, Prodigal Daughter is mediocre at best. With DS9's seventh season being as strong as it is, mediocre is plenty bad.

The DS9 MU would have been better if they'd killed off the endlessly boring "my razor is broken" alt-Bashir and kept the nasty face-slapping "Rule of Obedience Number Forty-seven" alt-Odo. Or at least waited until this episode to splatter him.

Personally, I understand why they had to kill Odo, as a changeling he'd have been far too powerful to handle. Imagine all the sorts of nasty things he could do as a shapeshifter. As faux O'Brien said: "Look at how much damage only four changelings had done on Earth!"

I will allow "The Emperor's New Cloak" to not come last for one very simple reason – the idea of the cloaking device being itself invisible, and two Ferengi carrying it through the corridors of the station while trying to not attract attention like two bickering music hall performers, is screamingly funny. Everything else... meh. Deep Space Nine's mirror universe episodes were the very definition of diminishing returns. It's clear why the production team couldn't resist going back after "Crossover", and also entirely apparent why they very much should have.

Well, consider who we had...

AWESOME
A kinky Kira

INTERESTING
A sniveling Garak
A decent Quark - Dead
A cruel Odo - Dead
A pirate Sisko - Dead
An un-marooned Tuvok - didn't really do much, but gets listed as Interesting because if sheer crossover appeal
A very Klingon Worf
A polyamorous Ezri
A serious WTF moment with Vic - Dead

NOT SO INTERESTING
A generic Terran rebellion
An O'Brien who was similar to the real one
A Dax who wasn't that different either
A Nog who was basically our Quark (dead)
A scruffy and completely boring Bashir
A Jennifer who changed sides because... well, I don't know. I mean, "I'm a Terran"?Wasn't she always?
A couple of Obligatory Dead Ferengi

Too many of the interesting characters got killed off early, so about all we could rely on was Kinky Kira

Aside from the Ezri overload issues of this run of episodes, I never minded "Prodigal Daughter." It was nice to see some non-joined Trill, I liked the vibe on that planet. Nothing exceptional, but I didn't mind it.

Meanwhile, as the person who saved all 4 MU eps in prior rounds, I consider "Emperor's New Cloak" an atrocity and would happily burn every copy.

I never had much use for Afterimage. The idea that Ezri should be station counselor when she's probably the most neurotic person on said station is just

The Ezri overload in the middle of the season did no favours, and it shows that we just two of those four in the bottom three. :D

At least with It's Only a Paper Moon, she was brilliantly utilised.

The Emporer's New Cloak is a terrible closing chapter for the Mirror Universe.

Especially since you saw what the Terrans did when they were in charge, and you don't want that to happen again. Maybe they and the K/C Alliance will wipe each other out, and the Ferengi (who seem surprisingly decent in the MU) will take over.

It's kinda odd that women are often lesbian in the MU but the men are all straight... I am just as puzzled as Rom about the whole thing.
