The Most Disliked Episode of DS9, 2023 Edition - Season 5...

Farscape One

Admiral
Admiral
Welcome to our bi-yearly 'Most Disliked Episode' games! Now that the 'Least Disliked Episode' games hosted by BlueStuff (who inspired me to create these games, so thank you very much for paving the way) have concluded, we can begin the opposite side of that coin.

Here's the game. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. I'll provide a list of the episodes for each season and you need to eliminate your most favorite or the one you deem the 'best.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed. Finally, leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you feel they would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win. Pretty simple. Enjoy!

I'll start season 5 with the season finale... "CALL TO ARMS".

This had EVERYTHING you could want in a season finale, and then some. Great moving of the overall story, great action, character beats for everyone, including the secondaries. The station battle was one of the last to use stop-motion, and what a way to end that era. Just breathtaking.

And that final shot... damn! My jaw dropped when it first aired, and it still never ceases to impress me. That summer was grueling, waiting for season 6.

Behr and Wolfe wrote very, very well together, and this is just another example of their scripts working flawlessly. With Allan Kroeker directing, they hit gold.

This was not only the best season finale of DS9, but the best in the entire franchise. And yes, I am including "The Best of Both Worlds" in that assessment.

Nor the Battle to the Strong. The quintessential Jake episode, exploring his outsider view of war and duty. This is where the concept of keeping Jake outside of SF, but surrounded by officers, pays off. Bashir is pretty good. The only fault I have for this episode is Farrell's strange turn of mood when talking about her past host's daughter.

ETA: For my money, this is the best season of Star Trek. Or more precisely, the best run of episodes starts with For The Cause in season 4 and goes through to You are Cordially Invited in Season 6. There's only one bad episode, but everything is highly consistent. Moreover, this is where all the narrative threads from the previous seasons are pulled together and intertwined, creating great complexity.

What to pick? What to pick?!? There are so many amazing episodes here so I'm going with the one I want to watch most right now (and keeping with the Jake-theme Bad Thoughts has started): "IN THE CARDS".
Lions and Geigers and bears, oh my (;)) this is a wonderful episode and I wish there were more featuring Jake & Nog like this. That it also features Weyoun and Kai Winn (with another one of her civil-sounding but scathing put-downs, this time to Weyoun: "No, we are nothing alike") makes it all the better!

I've just realised that it's rather like Lower Decks - this is just the sort of adventure we'd see Mariner & co. caught up in while the bigger picture stuff is being dealt with by the senior officers.

Javert approves:

"FOR THE UNIFORM"

The best installment of the Eddington arc is also the most controversial and thought-provoking. There's even an awesome in-joke/namedropping to "Traken" of Doctor Who lore, as if Argolis and a handful of others sprinkled throughout TNG wasn't good enough - they saved the best for DS9...

Agreed about the run of episodes being the best of STAR TREK, but I'd go as far as saying from "THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR" to "YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED".

While I will still call season 4 the best franchise ever got (with only the A plot of one episode being mediocre, which is "THE MUSE"), I would call season 5 edging just behind season 4 with only one full episode being bad. (I won't say the name as it might influence votes, but I'm pretty sure we are thinking the same episode.)

Only 1 and a half episodes being bad out of 59 in a row? Outside of FARSCAPE, I can't think of a single series that accomplished that feat.

"IN THE CARDS" and "FOR THE UNIFORM" were actually next on my list. Perfect episodes, both of them, for different reasons. So I am forced to choose between two I have in mind, and I'm going to go by production order.

My next save is "THE SHIP", DS9's 100th episode.

it gave us a rare look at the cost of command decisions when Sisko is talking with Dax at the end. Excellent scene. Bonus points for Worf's 'apology' at the end in the form of him standing watch with O'Brien to keep the predators away. I could never tell if it was a real thing or something Worf made up as his way of not just apoligizing to O'Brien but also honoring Muniz. Either way, it was honorable and tugged at the heartstrings.

Superb episode, all around. My favorite 100th episode of the franchise. (The others being "Redemption" and "NOTHING HUMAN" and "TIMELESS", depending on whether you go by production order or airdate.)

Sometimes, fanservice is meh. Sometimes, it's a disaster. But sometimes, it works. "Trials and Tribble-burgers... I mean, Tribble-ations" is an example of the latter.

If it were just a matter of quality of the episodes, I would agree. I don't include the beginning of season 4 because it feels less like a consistent narrative. People often comment that it was a reintroduction to the series, with Way of the Warrior acting as a second pilot. For better or worse, a lot of season 4 is coming back to the main characters, giving us exposition to explain their viewpoints and motives. Rejoined, for instance, is a great episode, with wonderfully quiet direction from Brooks and Farrell showing new subtlety. However, it doesn't feel connected to Indiscretion or Starship down. And there are great episodes--better episosdes-- after YACI, but there are also lots of places where it feels like seasons 6 and7 sputter.

YMMV. I wouldn't argue against your assessment.

"Children Of Time" is such a compelling story. Fabulous material for Nana Visitor. She was always beyond exceptional in that role, and this was one of the eps that really knew how to use her. And it's a clever way to move the Odo/Kira story forward.

Saving The Darkness and the Light. The episode destroys the notion that a pregnant actress (postpartum by days, in reality) can't act. And it's the debut of Mr Fuller. DS9 didn't do horror as well as Voyager or Enterprise, so this is its most prominent achievement in this category.

Ah, the interconnectivity from the episode points you described. Fair point, and using that as a barometer for that string of episodes, I certainly agree.

Good call.

My next save is for:
"LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN..."

It's not the best, but it is not the worst. Season 5 had its ups and downs, but this one's more memorable to me than most and largely for the (bulk of its) ideas it wants to talk about.

While other episodes hit a home run with some weighty ideas, never was it explored before where open planets like Memory Alpha and the various orgyoink planets like Wrigley's, Risa, and so on, would be easy targets for the Borg and so on. There were some weighty issues here. It dropped the ball because it didn't want to break the status quo, even if it wanted to break the status quo. But this is crawling up to when the TNG movies couldn't figure out if they wanted all the high-level Federation to be rogue or just Admiral Squishyhead who also got a similar death in "Licence to Kill" (1989). But INS is another story, and one far more inconsistent and messier than this DS9 outing could ever hope to be...

Monte Markham is quite good as the lead of the new traditionalists and he's overlooked too much. Sadly, of all the clips people want to show on YouTube, he's barely in any, only one - and he makes this episode better than the rest. Also look up some of his other show's roles. He covers the gamut, which is quite endearing, but I digress.

Worf's backstory explains fair enough as to why he was hesitant to let humans see his backside (or any other side, teehehehe) -- though Betazeds aren't that much stronger (and why aren't there weaker sentient species than humans? Oh well...) and Worf was quick to jump in after Riker left, but TNG was out of steam by then so it doesn't matter. his wedding episode proves that even more and that one's worse than this outing. IMHO, YMMV, EIEIO. :nyah:

The episode does shove in too much - all the silly snu-snu talk and here in Mr Rodger's Dating Service is how we cordially break up with folks but it sure would be nice if everyone did waste more precious screentime away from what clearly needed more dialogue accorded the characters, especially with that rushed ending. But is the story a total flop? Nowhere near close.

And, of course, this episode flagrantly ignores how Worf made a big mess on the proverbial carpet. That is egrgious, but is not episode-shattering in of itself - the fact it's hurried at the end only amplifies the script's ultimate problem.

And if it helps and I think it should: At least nobody in this episode belches out the Sluggo Cola jingle tune...

Also, the following is the version of the story that most people prefer, unfortunately:

As Bud Bundy might say, "Whoops!!" Also, the sets in this one were reused for the INS movie that came out a year later...

In Purgatory's Shadow is the beginning of another great DS9 two-parter. We find out that Tain survived the battle in The Die is Cast, and of course the brilliant twists with the real Martok and Bashir being in the internment camp. Garak and Worf are there to help add more class to proceedings. Awesome.

Also knocked The Ship back off as it seems to have reappeared on the list.

The fifth season is easily my favourite of DS9. It has three episodes that I rate as stinkers, Let He Who Is Without Sin, Ferengi Love Songs, and Empok Nor.

Those aside, I love the ongoing narrative that shows the buildup to war.

S4 is definitely more consistent with only one stinker, but the overall story doesn't quite grab me as much.

The things about the fifth season stinkers (which I only count Let He Who Is Without Sin) is that I am already into the episode some good ways before things go south. The comedy bits in the replimat and runabout are a little dated now, but they are good explorations of "the battle of the sexes," how the perspectives and ambitions of women and men in relationships tend to clash, but it does not fundamentally impair their commitments to their relationships. If I'm binging, I can get a fair bit into LHWIWS before I'm fed up, at which point I do some chores rather than turn it off.

"Let him who is Without Sin" is a classic example of the nature of this game... regularly regarded as a stinker by many, it has a person who appreciates it, and is safely off the list.

"Apocalypse Rising" is my next save. It doesn't quite live up to "Broken Link", but it allows several cast to stretch a bit. And I have to say, Avery Brooks made an awesome Klingon.

The fact Quark doesn't run is intriguing already. Dax would also be good in CinemaSins...

Forget Doctor Who's "The Leisure Hive" and TNG's "A Matter of Honor", this story takes the idea of officer swapping and learning about other cultures and puts them to far more interesting use, though the previous aforementioned episodes were already paving the way for full-fledged outings like this one. Grilka's pretty awesome, too. You can also see the painted decals on the holosuite wall!
