Of all the characters to turn grayscale, Riker is the perfect fit. It's a tad shoehorned into his backstory, if not causing some arguable contention, but is strong enough that (IMHO) it doesn't matter. There is a really great story in "The Pegasus". It makes full sense and fits into Riker's character so nicely, as well as leading to a number of terrific scenes and debates between so many characters and it all flows perfectly. A real standout for the season, post-season 4 TNG, TNG as a whole, and Star Trek as a whole.

The f/x budget was wisely allocated for this one as the asteroid effects are magnificent. For practical effects of the day, they were astounding. Would the story have worked as well if they had the same budget used in "Gambit", where audiences were salivating Pavlovianly when Robin Curtis was going to activate the Romulan artifact and (drum roll) it's a 25w incandescent light bulb being lit by a stagehand and nothing more? Very probably IMHO, but even I have to concede that well-placed and well-timed good effects to counter "what works within constraints" can be as integral to a visual medium as having balanced sound is. It took a few Doctor Who special release DVDs with new CGI that won me over, as well as certain episodes of TOS-R. But they had to be made just right and in the right spirit - yet another "not an easy task"...

As with "All Good Things" and a number of other episodes, poignant plot pieces (by the seashore) are sadly never used again. I wish DS9 would have followed up on it - if not, better yet, a TNG movie using part of it as a prelude to something bigger, in one or more directions. Was Khan brought back because of existing popularity*, or because his character the most meat to a worthwhile sequel stemmed from that character that would build popularity? TOS had numerous plot strands, but few were big enough to really do something grand with. Even "Insurrection", under different circumstances, could have made use of Pressman's antics and the Treaty of Algeron, not to be conflated as Flowers for Algernon (IMHO, a rather poignant sci-fi novel and movie adaptation as well, if not controversial in other ways, but yet again I dabber in jibberjabber...)

* Which begs a question - how were the conventions in the 1970s and was Khan always brought up in the way Borg have been in the 1990s through today? (Both possibilities are A-OK, I only recall that Nicholas Meyer had watched all 79 episodes and found something more in Khan than in Shahna and Gault from Triskelion to follow up on.)

The acting just shows how much the actors were relishing this. Can't blame them.

And the incidental music is one of a handful of greats that came after season 4, as it adds to the proceedings instead of being the sort of frog bog designed seemingly to distract (if not unintentionally detract). On the plus side, those handful of greats truly are generally great and not just "great by comparison". Granted, the other extreme is music being loud and for the sake of being loud, and I still can't fathom which is worse... either way, it's not an easy balance to make for sure...

"Endgame". Janeway vs. the Borg Queen, count me in.

The Borg were overused and diluted, but the acting in their scenes was spot-on. It's by no means the worst Borg episode either. Janeway "doing a Kirk" to end run around rules to save her crew was pretty cool, and is something VOY managed to keep fresh despite using that theme at least twice that I recall... And I'm a sucker for good Tuvok exposition too...

#60 "Future's End" is the most fun you can have with the Voyager crew. Every time Trek visits contemporary Earth, it's fascinating.

It's weird how they shoehorned them getting to Earth from the Delta Quadrant on a Sunday - it's easier for me to get to Dairy Queen for a sundae... and how to get them back after the story ends effectively... but that bit did somehow work, and there is much fun to have and a fairly decent plot when all is said and done. Sarah Silverman was pretty decent as a dramatic actress as well, while letting her comedy seep in at just the right times.
