Ah, I'm really looking forward to seeing "Ephraim and Dot" - I know what happens (I've looked a screencaps), but I just want to see it! (And "The Girl Who Made The Stars" too)

Anyway, back to that DS9 or Ent save: It's going to be Ent's "Carbon Creek". While I loved the main story in 1957 - fish-out-of-water Vulcans trying to blend in with the natives (Stron-the-plumber's exasperation, particularly) - The framing part with T'Pol, Trip and Archer is just a delightful little look at how they've all become friends (Jolene Blalock is fantastic as T'Pol). And the purse reveal at the end just makes it!

I'll next save "Looking For Par'Mach In All The Wrong Places." This is another of those episodes that impresses me by being a difficult concept that's actually executed in a way that somehow dances around all the landmines. Probably the area where Berman Trek struggling the most was sex and gender roles, and "Par'Mach" is ALL that. Yet in this one it works!

I mean, in a franchise filled with deeply OFF sexual messaging, it is not easy to stock an episode with violent choking-out sex yet avoid having it communicate anything unhealthy! This episode is a high-wire act that feels easy, though it could not possibly have been.

Removing Worst Case Scenario.

If you can ignore that there's no way Seska would ever make this program unless she knew she would be caught, which undermines the whole premise, it's one of the most entertaining holodeck episodes. The idea of the crew finding a training simulation written by Tuvok and using it to pretend to betray the crew for fun is brilliant.

A truly fun episode, it was a growth one for The Doctor, who was a breakout season 1 character, thanks to the talents of Robert Picardo. And vikings... on STAR TREK! I always have the urge to play "Immigrant Song" when watching this episode...

Though it has always struck me as an extremely peculiar choice to be the penultimate episode of the series**, "Renaissance Man" is a lot of fun. And I'm so glad they brought back the Overlookers for one last go before the clock ran out! They were such original adversaries for Trek at the time, a wonderful change of pace.

**which I realize is a characteristic of Berman Trek -- the last eps of TNG season 7 are mostly weirdly random premises, as is true for DS9 season 7 preceding the final arc... those writers rooms must have gotten so weird in the last sprints.

I'll save Ménage a Troi. It has some good moments. I like Riker playing chess with the Ferengi, And Picard's scene at then end is pretty classic. Probably the only Lwaxana Troi episode in the franchise I'd put above the bottom 25%

Time to save "Badda Bing, Badda Bang" - which, quite frankly, I can't believe is still here.
What a lovely break from the doom and gloom of war! The whole crew and other major players are all in on this low-stakes "mission" to save their photonic friend. I love the costumes, the characters, the "hero walk" down the promenade, Sisko pointing out the historical inaccuracies - particularly the racial tensions - for not wanting to join in and Kasidy reminding him that things have changed since then and they shouldn't impose limits on themselves anymore. And Kira. Wow! She certainly has changed a lot since "The Way of the Warrior" when she couldn't get into her holosuite role (and the yummy Malko!), and now she's throwing herself into the part!

I'm going to save Take Me Out to the Holosuite. I will say I avoided this episode for a long time - even skipping it during my DS9 rewatches - because I detest sports and I presumed it would thus be as boring as watching paint dry. But it's a great example of a low-stakes, low-key episode that works...doubly so because it's during the final season where there's just so much dark shit going on. Great performances from Brooks, Auberjonois, and Grodénchik as well.

I've always guiltily enjoyed "Ferengi Love Songs." Not the Rom/Leeta subplot, that's just trash, but I have fun with all the nonsense on Ferenginar. Basically Shimmerman, Cecily Adams, and Jeffrey Combs force it to work through their performances, with little to no help from the too-broad script. But that still leaves a lot of enjoyable acting to savor in this one!

"The Q and the Grey" is saved partly for Q returning to rebel form (after being an enforcer of the status quo in "Death Wish"), partly for some cracking-good dialogue, and mainly for Suzy Plakson as "Suzy Q," who is exactly the woman -- er, Q -- that Q should end up with.

Q: I know that you're probably asking yourself, "Why would a brilliant, handsome, dashingly omnipotent being like Q want to mate with a scrawny little bipedal specimen like me?"
Janeway: Let me guess: no one else in the universe will have you.

Q: Oh, I see, this is one of those silly human rituals; you're playing hard to get.
Janeway: As far as you're concerned, Q, I'm impossible to get.

Q: I was wondering, Kathy. What could anyone possibly see in this big oaf anyway? Is it the tattoo? Because mine's bigger.

I always had a soft spot for Rules of Acquisition, as I wasn't finding the Ferengi episodes DS9 annoying by this point. I always like the fact that it's the Ferengi who discover the Dominion first.

I wish we could have seen Pel again, or even had a reference to her when Quark first discovered his mother had been earning profit.

For me, DS9’s “Dogs of War” is the best remaining episode on the list. It’s wonderful to witness Rom’s extraordinary transformation from having been Quark’s somewhat bullied subordinate to leader of the Ferengi alliance! The scenes on Cardassia are even better and nicely ramps up the tension for the series finale.

It's a cool concept, and despite it feeling more like a TNG episode, DS9 pulls it off. We did need more encounters with other Gamma races, though.
