The Misterious Rooms....

I have it on audiobook as read by John DeLance. It's an excellent story read quite successfully by him. It would've made a great two-part episode.

Sentient, communicating dolphins? Wow... I'm glad they never went there.

Why? That's exactly what dolphins are in real life. Probably not intelligent enough to serve as navigational specialists on starships, but they're undoubtedly self-aware, thinking animals, and there's no question that they engage in very rich, complex communication.

Certainly a dolphin that lacks the level of sentience to converse with a human on daily politics could still be a very useful addition to a starship's complement...

Captain Picard: "Lt. Flipper, report!"
Lt. Flipper: (Dolphin Chatter)

Re: The Mysterious Rooms....

^ No it would be:

Picard: "Lt Flipper, we're about to be destroyed by the Borg cube!"
Flipper: So long, and thanks for all the fish!
(Vanishes in a flash of light.)
Picard: "Merde!"

Re: The Mysterious Rooms....

I like to think the Enterprise had a number of sentient freshwater and marine crewmembers or civilian personnel. Cetacean ops is just where the whales and porpoises performed their duties. The amphibious crewmembers might work in the dry part of the ship but eat and sleep underwater.

Re: The Mysterious Rooms....

It's actually proof that the Xindi (or at least the Aquatics) joined the Federation by the TNG era.

Never made that connection, but yeah there could be Xindi serving alongside the dolphins and orca. Good thought!
