The Mirror Universe?

My favorite episode was Through the Looking Glass because it was fun and we got to see Jennifer again. I also liked Crossover and Shattered Mirror. After that I didn't enjoy the mirror universe. It felt like t was becoming dull and while I liked Berial, I didn't need to see him again. I did like mirror Ezri though.

A mirror universe where the just out of WW3 semi primitive Terrans overrun technologically advanced and physically stronger aliens like the Vulcans and Andorians etc? ROFLOL who came up with that crazy concept?
But I have fun watching the episodes.

A real mirror universe woud have the warrior Solkar's ship as an invasion force taking over Earth and using the planet for its natural resources. Now if TOS had gone down that road arriving on a ship where Spock is in charge and humans are nothing but menial servants. Imagine the script for that!

I heard once that the intent in "Parallels" was to have a MU Ent-D be the ship that tried to blast Worf's shuttle, but then they went for the one from "Borg, everywhere" universe.

What is everyone's opinion on the Mirror Universe as it is portrayed in DS9?
A complete waste of time; it appeared in every installment DS9 counterparts were getting killed off. There was 1 ep. where I thought the writers would actually do something interesting but didn't. Jennifer Sisko died in the normal universe but in the Mirror U. she was still living, but of course as predictable with the War seasons she dies... again, it would have been interesting to be with a man who was nothing like the sociopath she once knew and adjust to a boy who looks at her as his mother--reborn.

It would've been a new form of Stepmother, I prefer Jennifer in any form than that 2 faced criminal Yates. Plus Sisko had grown to becoming a stronger man, and Jake was becoming a man. Oh well, I was really asking too much for that show. The show was mainly about exploitation, death and sorrow, and forgot about being explorers after the 3rd season.
Star Trek was about hope, and Kirk gave that mirror universe hope, and all DS9 did was present "hope" as a futile, failed effort, and a big, waste of time.

Kirk interfered. Mirror Spock failed.

LOL! Just the good shows & movies I consider Star Trek. Star Trek is utopian and about hope, if there's a show which alters that message, then its not Star Trek.

The vaunted "Utopian vision" was something that Roddenberry developed well after the fact of Star Trek.

He promoted it on the convention circuit in the later '70s and onward after developing his personal philosophy, and then it was deeply infused into the DNA of TNG (which I don't consider to be "real Star Trek"), but it never figured into the original series because it didn't exist yet.

I think it's absolutely great that Deep Space Nine came along and subverted and deconstructed the new-age Utopian gobbledygook of TNG.

Star Trek has been around for 50 years. It has been so many different things in all of this time that there can't be any consensus over what 'real' Star Trek is. I'd go as far to say that as long as it's entertaining, it's doing it's job.

Originally I was reading this thread because I enjoyed the Mirror Universe mostly. Mirror, Mirror was one of my favourite TOS episodes, and the continuation on DS9 was also a lot of fun with Crossover, Through the Looking Glass and Shattered Mirror. That should have been the end really, as Covenant and The Emperor's New Cloak were awful.

In a Mirror, Darkly is a funny one. I think that was the most entertaining some of ENT's cast had been throughout that series, but it's a shame it had to be a two-parter as I got a bid fed up with it all. However, they made up for it as we know that they had to spread the cost so that we could have that magical moment onboard the Defiant.

I honestly did not know the point of "In a Mirror, Darkly" besides another re-writing of TOS and it's Mirror Universe. If the Defiant is the prototype to rule and conquer; then the Empire's technology would have advanced 200 years ahead of Kirk's technology. Like most of the Mirror Universe side stories, they don't make any sense.

Imperial engineers were probably not that bright to begin with - just look at what their engines did to Trip. It seems clear that engine technology in the MU is very crude, prone to radiation leaks, and badly constructed.

So their engineers must not have been able to effectively reverse-engineer the Defiant's technology. They're just not very good at that sort of thing.

And Empress Hoshi probably implemented some kind of technological chilling effect to prevent anybody else from using the technology against her.

I find Mirror universe episodes fun but absurd from a Star Trek universe perspective. If all the aliens are mirror images of their Prime universe then The Vulcans would be still violent like their ancestors. There is no way Solkar's ship would not have invaded and taken over Earth. And 'technology backwards and physically weaker than Vulcans' human beings able to reverse engineer alien technology to conquer the quadrant? ROFLOL

You're taking the term 'mirror universe' too literally.

It's no different from any other alternate timeline, just with arguably more radical departures than what we tend to see.

Oh I get that, but the premise although fun is not credible to me from a Star trek perspective. Just imagine the 19th century Zulus not only defeating the technically superior British at Rorkes Drift but taking over the British Empire and ruling 25% of the world's population... Yeah right.
Or from your cultural perspective the Native Americans not only defeating the European colonists/invaders but taking over Western Europe and remaking it in their image for 500 years....
