The Maple Leaf Lounge

IIRC, Lower Decks is indeed made in Canada but I can't remember where. I think it's in the closing credits.

As for the Manitoba, its name has indeed been mentioned but not its class. Although it is probably Parliament class. I'm afraid to edit the Memory Alpha entry 'cos it will probably get reverted. :sigh:

Edit: I took the easy way out and filed it under "Background information". :D

Yes, it appeared in an episode of Lower Decks.

If you haven’t watched the show: there was also an episode (in season 1, I think) where the USS Vancouver appeared. And in the most recent season, a USS Manitoba was mentioned (but not seen).

Yeah, I haven't watch many of the new series as I don't have access to Paramount+.

I looked up the production company and they appear to be headquarted in LA with, with offices in NY and in Vancouver, and it's said they were the first animation studio in Canada to join a union. So, all those Canadian references might have something to do with that.

^ Good to know. I haven't watched CTV Sci-Fi much, if at all since its rebrand. If I do, it's usually via my DVR's on-demand, which for some reason doesn't seem to have all content.

with the federals parliament prorogued until March 24th, I expect ford to call an election for the Ontario in the very near future.

He'll want to get another 4 years locked in before the poilievre gets elected.

Not Polievre! Not Polievre!

I wish Charlie Angus would run for PM. Now there's a man with integrity who will stand up for Canadians, one who's not afraid to call out others for what they are. I've been really impressed with him as of late.

the local news service did a vox pop bit on trudeau's resignation.

One guy said it was good cos he hated trudeau and hated the liberals.

Look to the wife and said it was as if they were talking to her father.

I agree with you. But unfortunately, I think it's going to take some kind of miracle-level occurrence for him not to win the next election. Sadly I don't think it matters who the Liberals pick as leader, the Conservatives are still going to win, and the only consolation is that maybe the right leader can limit them to a minority... and even that seems far-fetched right now.

What are you proposing? That he quit the NDP and make a bid for the Liberal leadership? Because I don't think Singh is going anywhere right now.

Time for another ridiculously stupid question...

"prorogued"? :alienblush:

Prorogation is basically the end of a parliamentary session. It kills any bills before parliament. Parliament doesn't sit until the next session starts, and committees aren't allowed to conduct business either. But it doesn't actually dissolve parliament, and so it will reconvene for the next session, in this case starting on March 24.

The Crown (through the Governor General) is the only one with the power to prorogue parliament, but the GG always acts on advice of the Prime Minister. So we have a bit of a history with PMs requesting, and receiving, prorogation to avoid, or at least put off, tricky political situations.

Once the next session starts, a throne speech is required, and votes on throne speeches are generally always confidence votes. So there is a good chance that the government will fall and parliament will be dissolved shortly after they resume the new session.

So who is everyone's preference for the new Liberal leader? I'm honestly not really a fan of the idea of Carney getting the job. I'm also worried that, whoever it is, is going to end up being a Kim Campbell-style sacrificial lamb.

I dunno. Just a wish. But he could possibly run as an independent, and if Liberal leadership is up for grabs, I could see him switching. Crazier things have happened. And I feel he's definitely leader material.

On the other hand, I remember when Glenn Thibeault crossed the table from being our local Federal NDP rep to being our local Provincial Liberal, and earned a lot of ire for doing so.

Basically a freeze on any activity that can be done via the House of Commons. Usually used as a delaying tactic. It's not used very often, but Stephen Harper used it and that's been the only other time I remember.

But the way our system works, you can't become prime minister by running as an independent.

If he crossed the aisle to join the Liberal party to run for the leadership, I don't think he'd probably end up with a lot of support. Now if the Liberals and NDP "united the left" and merged their parties, then maybe he could run for the leadership of the combined party? But I don't think a merger is very likely, and even if it was in the cards, I doubt they could pull it off in the couple of months available before parliament reconvenes.

Yeah, especially after Singh put his support behind the Conservatives. I would never be able to see a merger, but more of an alliance like in the past. But even that seems very unlikely at this point. It's a frustrating situation, to be sure, and worse yet, I'm at a loss as to who could become the new Liberal leader because nobody really comes to mind. I think they're going to need to regroup.

I personally like Freeland. Although I don’t know how electable she is, because people who don’t like Trudeau are probably going to closely associate her with him.

I’m not on board with either Carney or Joly.

I also like Anand, although we haven’t heard much from her lately. I could go either way on LeBlanc. I don’t feel I know enough about Champagne to make an informed opinion.
