Hey, we finally got one!! :D

Canada gets its own shiny viral monolith in Manitoba

Too bad it got taken down later the same day...
Fun fact: In the Civilization II: Test of Time game, the Midgard/Fantasy scenarios have a Monolith as a "goodie hut" in the Underground level of the map. Those are brown, though, rather than stone or metal.

I guess someone had a whim, and it caught on. There was a guy at one of the SF conventions I went to many years ago, who doodled up several pages of "monolith comics" and sold them in the dealers' room. I hope I still have the set I bought, because they were cute and funny.

And there are a couple of comic paperbacks called "Who Was That Monolith I Saw You With?" and "Son of Monolith". It's a combination of Star Trek (TOS), the Monolith, asteroids that always get in the way, and a space dragon (also turns up in inconvenient places).

So my city actually got its own monolith yesterday:

Unfortunately, they didn't really put it anywhere "clever", they just sort of plunked it downtown. It was hauled off later that day.

I didn't even see it make the local news? The image here is from Reddit.

So congratulations to us! Apparently this year we have practically stamped out a communicable disease that spreads easily, and can lead to death for certain members of the population.

No, not *that* one. I'm talking about influenza. The flu has been practically non-existent in Canada for this flu season:

Flu almost non-existent this year as coronavirus cases rise across Canada

It would have been nice if the article had looked closer at the science behind why this is the case, though. Is it just due to the increase in vaccinations? If not, then they should have gone more in-depth into why the our current public health measures are working so well against the flu, but not at all so well against COVID. I mean, I assume it has something to do with the fact that COVID is new (and therefore we have virtually no immunity to it) and that it is possibly more transmissable than the flu, but it would have been good to have the reasons spelled out for us.

On a completely unrelated note... I know this comment is more Ontario-specific than it is related to Canada as a whole, but I'm going to say it anyway: Rod Phillips had better lose his cabinet position over his shenanigans.

Yep either he resigns or ford fires him.

That claims that he regrets the trip ring utterly false. his deceptive practices (putting up social media posts to make it look like he was still here) show deliberate intent.

He's not sorry for the trip, he's sorry that he got caught.

Not a good look for ford either. He now admits to having known two weeks ago means he have found out about almost as soon a philips left the country.

/*edit*/
philips has fallen on his sword.

Good. Hope the trip was worth it.

it's been a very expensive trip.

As a cabinet minister his basic pay (so before allowances etc) was around $165,851. As a backbencher that will drop to $116,550.

That's $49,301 less in the pay packet.

Plus anyone he employed in his ministerial office directory rather than coming from the public service are probably out a job as well.

This is kind of a small thing, but I'm curious. Any of you who live in, or have been to, Quebec City, do you know if Jean-Lesage Airport ever got around to getting US border preclearance?

Reason I ask is that once we can all travel again I was thinking about finally doing a trip to the winter carnival. I would only go IF the airport has border preclearance....because I hate the thought of having to go back through security when making my connecting flight home (happened to my dad and me a few years ago when we flew home from Germany). Seriously, we had like a three hour layover in Chicago and we still almost missed our flight!

On a vaguely related matter, it still pisses me off that Air Canada got rid of their nonstop service from Omaha (where I live) to Toronto. I only got to use it for one trip!

Hockey Night In Canada starts tonight. (RIP Neil, although I know you'll wake up everyone in Heaven with a Holy drum solo.) Habs vs Leafs at 7 (my time), with Joe Thornton coming home to land on the first line. Canucks vs Oilers at 10.

Frankly the Canadian (so-called "Northern") division has got me more excited than I've been in years. I hope this catches on and becomes permanent. We could have a Canadian division trophy every year.

might be good for this year but if it was full season I think the fans would soon get tired of seeing their team play the same teams week-in and it's an issue that I think also plagues MLB where most of the season will be the Blue Jays playing the same 5 other teams.

I guess you didn't enjoy the World Juniors, or the Olympics, or the Canada Cup?
No offense, I grew up with the Original Six. Never got bored of that, and neither did anyone else in the country (especially in my living room). The inter-city rivalries in Canada are taken pretty seriously by fans. TO vs Mtl or Ottawa. Edmonton vs Calgary. Anything East vs West. From a marketing standpoint, this builds a brand.
And it's not like anyone in Florida or Texas cares if a Canadian team comes to town. (OK, maybe one or two people.)
In a situation like this, the amount of games each team plays in conference, they are figuring each other out, finding weaknesses, finding solutions. This is a real crucible. Something didn't work this week? We'll try something else. And end of the season we're looking at our national team. And then we have competitions we could only imagine up to then.
Give it a try and get back to me.

Those as are all short tournament, not a 80 game season so not a valid comparison.

Secondly people watched the original 6 era teams because that's all there was so you either watched or didn't watch.

Going to have to guess that it's maybe down to the fact that we've been told to wash our hands often, and use hand-sanitizer, and that ultimately the flu didn't stand a chance with the increase in both.

Was watching the fights tonight with Simmons and Chiarot on the first card. Then a hockey game broke out.
Nylander and Tavares with 6 points between them earned their pay for the night. Genius pass by Tavares for the winner.
Anderson looking like a great pickup for the Habs. (Domi will be missed still.) I've been loving Suzuki and he didn't let me down. Clear the track, Reilly's back. Great game.
Wish there was some way fans could dial in and the actual cheers and boos could be piped into the arena. Guess we're a few years away from that kind of tech.

Canada is now up for a new Governor-General as payette has announced her resignation in the light of the independent review of things at Rideau Hall.

From the CBC article on the report I'm not suprised she resigned and saving boy-blunder from having to ask the Queen to fire her.

Going from the article she's turned Rideau Hall in to a nightmare to work at and her primary aide (normally a senior member of the public service) a) has no idea how things work in the public service and b) also very unpleasant to work for but also the payette has form for this sort of behavior.

bit more due dilligence next time justin okay?

My in-laws are still waiting for their golden wedding anniversary certificate to come from the G-G and they don't normally take 6 months (the wife does the requests as part of her job). Apparent the F-i-L wanted one signed by payette (to complete the set there's even one from trudeau's office).

That's really unfortunate... I always admired her as an astronaut and a woman of science. I guess it just reinforces that you don't really know what famous people are like when they're not in the public eye, and that even former astronauts can be Terrible Bosses.

Yep. She's got a laundry list of accomplishments that qualify her for the moniker of "Modern Renaissance Woman", but of course that doesn't mean she's required to have a pleasant personality to go along with all that.

Last year, on BBC Earth, I was watching a series in which Chris Hadfield was part of a team of former astronauts conducting tests in the UK to find qualified applicants for the space program. The idea was that the group of them would go through a battery of tests and would gradually be eliminated until they had a final group of 3... which would be whittled down further to a winner (the others could re-apply later if they wanted, after taking steps to remedy whatever had prevented them from winning this time).

Part of the tests were psychological, and were conducted both simultaneously with the other tests and partly via interviews. Now I understand a comment Hadfield made about testing for compatibility in a crew. He said it hadn't been stressed as much during the tests for shuttle crews, and as a result there had been a few contentious incidents. He didn't name any names, but now I guess I know at least one of the names he wasn't naming (I don't recall if he and Payette were ever part of the same mission). What puzzles me about her shuttle missions is that if she's always been so difficult to deal with, why did they let her go up more than once? He did say that they were putting more emphasis on psychological and compatibility testing now because they're searching for the best candidates to train for a manned Mars mission.

This is a shame. It was so refreshing at first to see a GG who was genuinely interested in science and who openly encouraged women and girls to consider the sciences when choosing their advanced education programs and later careers. Her speech at the science symposium where she belittled astrology doesn't bother me at all - I was glad that someone was speaking up about that.

It's sad that she let so many people down in other ways, though. And in the end she didn't even have the grace to offer an honest apology. She used the typical disgraced politician's excuse for her resignation: "I'm leaving to spend more time with my family."

Nope. She left before she got thrown out. At least the Queen didn't have to be involved in this any more than just a notification that she'll be getting a new vice-regal representative in Canada at some point this year.

And what really annoys me about the commenters on CBC.ca is the number of twits who belittle her just because she was an astronaut. They're entitled not to respect her, but have some damn respect for the job itself. It's not an easy one.

Yeah, it really is. I'm hoping people will still be able to appreciate her accomplishments she's done for the sciences. Like you, I've admired her, and she seemed to be a good fit for the museum she was the head of before getting the GG job. At some point, you kind of have to wonder where it all went wrong? Wow, what baggage. I feel bad for the people who've had to work under her.

That does puzzle me too. I have to kind of wonder if something went wrong in her life after retiring from being an Astronaut, or if it was a problem all along. From watching many different documentaries and even meeting a few astronauts such as Alan Bean and Chris Hadfield, I've always had the impression that astronauts came away with a different, almost spiritual experience from seeing the Earth and the Moon from different perspectives, and I can't imagine any of them would end up feeling any negatives that would manifest themselves in such a way. They've all come back and applied their newfound inspirations in new ways, and with Alan Bean, he'd started painting the unique perspectives he'd had from the moon.

There's another possibility that I'll admit is only my own speculation. There could be a medical problem that causes this behavior. Remember how Margaret Trudeau acted out for so long, doing bizarre things, and then much later it was discovered that she's bipolar? It's occurred to me to wonder if there might be a medical reason that's become more problematic after her shuttle missions (obviously she wouldn't have been allowed to go if she did have something going on; they'd have caught it and grounded her).

Of course nobody likes to learn that their heroes aren't nice people. In this case, I can respect her scientific and other accomplishments, but that's all.

I suffered working for an abusive supervisor, with an unsupportive manager and an HR that wouldn't take sides. (I kind of get HR, they aren't going to take sides.) Thankfully that is the past.
Anything she accomplished as an astronaut doesn't convince me I should admire her as a Governor General. Spending years developing your own career doesn't make a good leader.
