He was even on Corner Gas once. Played Oscar's old childhood bully.

On a completely unrelated matter: Is there anything that your Pizza Pizza (which is delicious, BTW  ) can do to stop Little Caesar's from stealing their name? They say it all the time in every ad I see. Hell, it's even in their Twitter handle. Can't Pizza Pizza claim trademark/copyright infringement or something like that?

Oh, there was a big suit years ago. I can't remember exactly when, perhaps in the late 90's or early 2000's. Basically, it lead to Little Caesar's not being allowed to use that tagline when advertising in Canada. So, the advertising we do get for them is a bit different.

    Ow, my ears!

Thanks for the thought, but I'll stick to my current musical go-to, which is a group from Ecuador, playing lots of good stuff on panflutes and other instruments I don't even know the names of.

So sad to hear about the Snowbirds plane crash in Kamloops, B.C. :(

Reports are saying the sole fatality was Captain Jenn Casey, who was the public affairs officer for the group. The pilot lived, but "sustained serious injuries". I haven't seen a name provided for them yet.

The whole point of this tour was to try to lift Canadians' spirits, with everything that has been going on. I had been a little skeptical as to whether that would actually work, but I figured at least it shouldn't hurt. Now it's hurting. :(

The fortunate news is that apparently the couple who owned the house that the plane crashed into are both OK: she was in the basement, and he was out back at the time.

ETA: I read on CTV that the injured pilot is Captain Richard MacDougall. His injuries are serious, but not considered life-threatening.

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow Canadians!!

Are you going to do anything special to celebrate today? I'll just be spending a quiet day at home... much like all the other days recently!

Been watching the local celebrations on TV. We've had a great lineup of musical performers, from Lennie Gallant from Nova Scotia in a songwriters circle featuring other acts, local to my area Patricia Cano, and finalizing with Jim Cuddy.

I have to admit, when I first saw this headline in the Trek Today news feed, my first thought was, "Wow, Andrew must be really desperate for some post-leadership work!" ;)

Scheer Joins Star Trek: Lower Decks

Turns out that the character's first name is 'Andy'!

so tonight we find out who the next federal tory leader is going to be.

If it's mckay or o'toole who says conservatives don't believe in recycling? lewis might have been okay but she's a social conservative and sloan should have been booted from party.

which would lead us to the next election which could come as soon as November. If blunderboy had thought things through he could have romped it home on the back of his covid handling approval but no he had go a fuck it up.

I doubt we'll see any new policies from the tories but they'll be busy sucking up to Alberta but should escape unharmed from the fuckup that is jason kenney.

the ndp are going nowhere backwards and really screwed the pooch when they dumped mulchair (not that i'd vote for them anyway).

what a shit sandwich of a choice.

I predict MacKay, because they want someone capable of defeating Trudeau. How quickly they forget (or don't care) that MacKay is a misogynist, entitled POS who sold out the old Progressive Conservative party to Stephen Harper in exchange for a slew of cabinet posts he wasn't remotely qualified for.

Triggering an early election would be stupid. Elections Canada can't handle a normal election without disenfranchising some disabled voters; if there's an election during a pandemic, the housebound voters will be screwed.

And... I was wrong. O'Toole won.

I'm not that familiar with him. I don't get Prime Ministerial vibes from him, though.

He's out of Ontario but launched his leadership campaign in Alberta in order to appeal to the right of the party and that has done the trick.

he's been elected leader on the choice of the social conservatives - the same ones who have us scheer and ford.

I have dual citizenship, by birth. My dad was born in Nova Scotia in 1918. His ancestors came to Nova Scotia in the 1750s, from Germany. My grandfather moved the family down to Connecticut and then New York State in 1924.

I have long felt the draw and lure of Nova Scotia. My wife and I would love to live there.

Six years ago, when I was 47, I investigated possibilities.

I learned that Canada actively recruits people into the military up to age 57. The story also goes that Canada is desperate for workers, largely due to the fact of a declining birthrate for quite a long time.

The problem? Every government worker in Nova Scotia whom I spoke with in 2014 said basically the same thing: Even if you have citizenship, if you have not lived in Canada it is held against you and may be an insurmountable obstacle. Even more so if your spouse is not a citizen, which is the case for my wife.

I also found out something that is downright crazy. If a husband is out-of-work and he and his wife are homeless, officialdom views it that he is committing domestic violence against her, because he is not providing for her welfare. :wtf::crazy:

I have some spinal issues and some other health problems that simply require some reasonable accomodations. I still feel that I have a lot to offer, to a decently understanding employer.

If Canada is so desperate for workers, why make it so difficult for people who genuinely want to settle there and make a difference?

Do the other provinces handle things differently than what I was told about Nova Scotia?

My understanding is that O'Toole himself does not hold social conservative views. However, as you note, it appears he basically won by courting the social conservatives and picking up the majority of Lewis's downvote support. That might make him feel beholden to them.

I do wish that MacKay had won. Although I am by no means a CPC supporter, I would have felt a little more comfortable going into the election with him as the CPC leader, since he was the most progressive of the four.

Although he finished in last place, I was unpleasantly surprised at the number of votes Sloan actually received. I expected him to get blown out.

or he could do a ford and flip them off.

and speaking of social conservative tania granic allen, who was a big ford backer until he told the social conservatives to sod off threw her wait before he walked back changes to the sex curriculum was backing sloan.

as for sloan, my tory loving, trudeau hating father-in-law lives in his riding and isn't impressed with him.

    gotta say this is bullshit.

I've lived in Canada for 11 years now, citizen for 5 and never had anyone hold that against me though admittedly I've never tried joining the miltary.

never heard that one and think you need to provide a link.
    a) many countries have restrictions on the ability for people to immigrate when they have health issues.
    b) immigration is a federal matter. They set the guidelines for who can and can't immigrate to Canada. The provinces merely set guidelines such as how long it takes to qualify for the provincial health care programs (in Ontario for example I had to wait 3 months for OHIP coverage).

@Marc thanks for the info. I have no idea what was going on at the time, but we talked with 4 different people in official capacities and that is the crap that they dished out on the phone.

I think that my wife and I will wait until next year, see where Covid-19 is at, and depending on that perhaps make a new round of phone calls....with the hope that we will not encounter any of those same types again.

I'm watching the Yankees/Blue Jays game now...and there are Toys R Us ads behind home plate. Are they still a thing in Canada?
