The Maple Leaf Lounge

I've been told that Law & Order: Toronto begins tonight. If any of you folks manage to see it, feel free to comment. May be awhile before it's broadcast down here. :(

Unless Peacock gets it, which is probably unlikely.

So, anyone else use CBC Gem? I noticed yesterday that it now prominently says it's brought to you by Amazon....

I have been using it to do a full watch through of Made in Canada, but, coincidentally, I finished the series last weekend. There was no mention of Amazon at that time. Interesting to hear that that's the case now. I wonder what it means for the future of the service?

I've been told I should give Ghosts a try, so maybe I'll be back to try that, assuming it's still on the service.

You were (slightly) misinformed. It actually premiered last night.

I'm not really that into police procedurals. I did watch some Law & Order shows back in the day, because someone I was with at the time liked them. It's been a hot minute, though. That said, I might actually be curious enough to try watching L&O: Toronto, except for the fact that a) I gave up cable a while ago, and b) I don't really want to pay $5/month for CItyTV+ to watch a single show I'm only mildly curious about.

I know you've probably never had to look into this, because the US is probably one of the most well-serviced markets in the world, but would it be possible for you to sign up for CityTV+ if you used a VPN? I know some services won't accept foreign credit cards, but since this is through Amazon, maybe their payment methods are a little friendlier?

To tie the two replies together: one procedural I do keep meaning to check out is Tribal, on CBC Gem. It was mentioned by another poster here, and I think I watched the first episode, but I wanted to get through Made in Canada first, and that took a while. (I don't watch a lot of TV! )

Could be that the CBC has just outsourced their CDN to Amazon rather than the cost and requirements of running it in house.

some wags have raised serious credibility issues such as the detectives able to to get around without getting held up by road works

though I do think the writers of piece in yesterday's Toronto Star have no really idea on the CI concept and how it's different to the other L&O shows.

I’ll be watching it soon (my wife and I watch the original show and we’re curious about the Toronto one). I’ve seen every season of the original, and many seasons of SVU and Criminal Intent (my second favourite back in the day), so I think I can be a reasonable judge.

@Avro Arrow, I appreciate the thought but I don't think a VPN would work for me. I've never used one before, I know I'd manage to screw things up somehow. And I'm afraid that MLB.TV - which is where I get my baseball - would find out I'm using a VPN and kick me out (I'm sure they come down hard on anyone caught using a VPN to get around the territorial rights issue).

On a vaguely related matter, I was DuckDuckGo-ing about this very topic and I found out that Vincent D'Onofrio wants a revival of the original Criminal Intent! Now THAT I did not expect.

I hope he gets his wish, BTW, 'cos he knocked it out of the park as Robert Goren and I'd love to see him again.

That would be awesome.

@wayoung 's comment about CBC Gem and Amazon.

Open it up. TV, App, web browser, doesn't matter. It now has "Brought to you in part by Amazon" prominently displayed on the homepage.

Today it says it for the Black Stories section. I remember it being a more generalized statement when I posted the other message

Just when I had recently given Doug Ford credit for something, he turns around and reverts to his true colours.

(Hopefully at least one of those is outside of the paywall?)

"Like-minded judges" :brickwall:
Saw that yesterday. It’s pretty sad that, despite this nonsense, Ford still has at least four premiers who are worse than him.

I had a phone memory of Feb 28 pop up, and it was the aftermath of a giant snow storm from 11 years ago.

Today is supposed to hit 16. Then rain and a flash freeze down to -11.

I just cannot get over this winter. I mean, it's good for me personally, but it must be terrible overall for the environment.

Yeah, it was fairly warm yesterday feeling like a Spring day, and last night we even had a thunderstorm, and today a flash freeze sending the temps down to -28 with the windchill. Had to do some errands today and the wind was brutal. Walking into the wind was hurting my face.

They called for a thunderstorm this evening. I was looking forward to it, I haven't seen one over the river at my new place yet. Ended just being blustery and rainy, no lightning.

Flash freeze is coming....

I watch it occasionally. They're really pushing the premium service, which I have no intention of going for. CBC is a Crown corporation and I'm not paying extra for it.

On another note - and why this wasn't listed first on the news feed, I don't know, but Brian Mulroney died: Brian Mulroney, one of Canada's most consequential prime ministers, is dead at 84 | CBC News

I hated him, I consider him a coward, and if not for that "Right Honourable" in front of his name, he should have ended up in prison.

Since they are selling so many tickets, Cineplex and Landmark have increased ticket prices for Dune by $1/ticket vs normal prices.

This is while Cineplex is dealing with the fallout from a online service fee lawsuit.

For comparison, Cineplex actually gave about $10 worth of scene points to anyone who bought tickets to Madame Web opening weekend, and are still giving $7.50 in equivalent points to go see it.

This is why it's a good idea to have competition in the industry. Sadly, where I live, we don't have that competition for first-run theatres.

No comment about Mulroney? I suppose he'll have a state funeral and the UCP/CPC will pretend to care about the old party they hijacked.
