Time for a silly question: The animated Corner Gas doesn't take the movie into account, does it? For instance, in the animated version...

Brent and Lacey aren't yet a couple, are they?

I never post politically-themed comments unless I think they're relevant. There's an element of connect-the-historical/cultural-dots to Columbus, Macdonald, the residential schools, the vandalism of the statues and churches, the current federal election, and the shitstorm going on in Alberta over the draft curriculum and how the government deliberately ignored the part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's requirement that teaching about indigenous issues begin in kindergarten, not years later, not to mention that it was a blatantly racist buddy of Jason Kenney who oversaw the social studies portion of the curriculum draft.

All these things are connected, but I suppose you're not seeing all the dots because you don't live in this region and aren't constantly surrounded by some of these issues. And if you have a provincial representative who isn't a bigot who supports racists, consider yourself lucky.

I have no quibble at all with considering The Beachcombers a national treasure. I have my favorite episodes, and that haunting song that Gordon Pinsent sang in one of the episodes still runs through my mind on occasion, even though it's been nearly 50 years since I saw it (my mind works like a tape recorder when it comes to certain kinds of music). My grandmother had a crush on Bruno Gerussi and I was at the age when I thought Bob Park (Hugh) was pretty cute. I was disappointed when he left the show, but by then I was getting old enough to agree with my grandmother's opinion of Gerussi.

My favorite episode, though, will always be the crossover with the Irish Rovers. And of course, due to an insane tangle of copyright issues and rights and the feud that led to Will Millar quitting the group back in the '90s, that's the one episode that will never appear on DVD (not that any others have; it's insane that CBC and the show's creators are sitting on a gold mine and insist on doing nothing with it).

Sometimes? Almost constantly, in my view. The only time we have an advantage is when the show isn't really worth watching (I'm referring to atrocious offerings like Picard).

I have no idea if it's on Netflix. I canceled Netflix years ago after my account got hijacked by someone in Italy and Netflix's customer service people did exactly nothing helpful to stop it. I bought the series on Amazon, including the script for what would have been the final TV movie that should have been a full 10-episode season.

If you've seen The Tudors, you'll recognize a few of the cast from that (ie. Ursula Bonadeo is played by the same actress who played Bessie Blount in The Tudors). David Oakes is in a lot of period shows (he plays Juan).

If you like the show, would you be interested in reading any fanfic? There's everything from adventure and romance to humor and really heartbreaking stories. I've been working on a crossover with Doctor Who (Fifth Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa) that's nowhere near finished, but there's a ton of anachronistic fanfics that cross The Borgias with The Tudors (they're anachronistic because they often have Cesare paired with Anne Boleyn, and in real history he was dead before she was even out of childhood).

Honestly, I don't think so. While it was fun seeing it happen in the movie, I don't think they continued that. The animated series is more of an extension to the live-action, and could possibly be taking place before the movie.

It's no wonder why they've often tried to reboot the show, afterall it went on for 19 seasons. The last time I think was with Dave Thomas replacing Molly as the restauraunt owner.

One TV show I wouldn't mind seeing a reboot for is an old 80's show called Seeing Things. It was like a precursor to Daily Edition by as much as 30 years, about a man who could see things happen before they happen. It also apparently had guest stars in the form of Bruno Gerussi and Gordon Pinsent.

That's a shame, and I think that is a very real issue whenever they license out music for a TV show. I think it's somewhat worse in Canada though since Canada has a problem with not archiving much of anything. Sometimes it just disappears into the ether. It reminds me when as recently as 2010 or 2012, when Alan Doyle wrote a song to appear on I think it was NCIS, a unique song written particularly for that episode. Well, it appeared on the first broadcast, but any subsequent airings had the song removed. Seems a little odd to me, especially given the fact that it was especially written for the episode.

Haha well, I didn't want to appear as if I were exaggerating, so I toned it down. But yeah, it's very frustrating when faced with that kind of problem. I've sometimes seen something become available as much as 2 years after the original airing.

They would have had to pay him $$$$ every time the episode was rerun.

Kinda like Robert Duncan McNeil's characters in Star Trek. He played one character in TNG and a different one on Voyager, even though both characters had an almost identical backstory and initial characterization. The reason it was Tom Paris on Voyager instead of Nick Locarno is because the author of the TNG episode would have had to be paid $$$$ every time the character's name was used. So Voyager still wanted the actor, but tweaked his name and background just enough that it could be considered an 'original' character.

^ And also why T'Pau became T'Pol on VOY (although T'Pau herself did make a later appearance...guess she had a lot of Heart and Soul ;) ).

Sure, and I could understand that, if it weren't for the unique song done especially for it. Not like they couldn't have come up with an arrangement to benefit them both. But to have it appear in only one airing and then not at all, makes me wonder why they went through the trouble of doing that in the first place.

Seems dumb to not pay for perpetual re-run and DVD and streaming rights, doesn't it?

I like to think it happens before the movie. That way you even get to end on a story with the original actress for Brent's mom.

I also think that most animated series tend to have an internal continuity of their own that doesn't necessarily follow that of their original counterparts. It makes it easier for syndication runs.

The first act of her term of office should have been to say "No."

I'm waiting for the demand that any $10 bill with Macdonald's picture on it be deemed non-legal tender (I still have one or two).

It's not too many years from now that Pierre Trudeau will be eligible to be put on the money (you have to be dead for 25 years and he's been dead for 21 years). Somehow I rather doubt that would ever happen.

Did Harold ever actually grow up? He acts like he's about 6.

Were you ever able to find this series?

No, and I think that's more or less why the concept is part of the joke.

I honestly haven't had time to look. I was away camping this weekend. But I'll look for The Tudors too. I think there's only one production of that one, right?

Not to anyone who has an understanding of how things are supposed to work.

The G-G by convention acts on the advice of the P.M. While she could have refused his request without solid grounds for doing so she could have triggered a constitutional crises.

Canada has already had one of those over an election call.

When the harper govt changed to the law so parliament could have fixed four years terms it left in the option for the government to go earlier and didn't set a minimum term so what grounds would she have to refuse trudeau's request.

Plus given that harper when early in 2008 to try and get a majority and the opposition parties talking of no confidence motions and of bring down the trudea govt early last year as the pandemic was starting, this bleating about the early election is pure blatant hypocrisy.

As far as I know, The Tudors is still available on CBC Gem. Just go to CBC.ca, find the TV section and there should be a link to the Gem section. You'll have to make an account, but it's free (though they try to pester people to pay for premium). I don't see any reason to pay premium since that content is already part of my cable package.

The series are listed in alphabetical order, so you'll have to scroll down quite a long way. I'm partway through the last season (ie. Katherine Howard hasn't been executed yet, but I think that comes next episode or two).

Come to think of it, The Borgias would qualify for that streaming service. I wonder if they ever had it there and I just didn't notice. The Tudors is there because of Canadian content, and The Borgias has at least two Canadian actors in the cast (Colm Feore is also in it; he plays Cardinal Sforza, and Francois Arnaud is better known in Quebec as much of his acting career has been in French productions).

I think this argument should be taken to the election thread, as I just noticed we're not supposed to talk about the election in this thread.

Yeah, I'll check CBC Gem. I have the app installed. No such luck on Netflix. I looked last night.

Yeah, I had mine earlier this week. Funny thing is, locally they've used a different kind of icing that doesn't harden and was kind of gooey and they weren't quite as nice as in the past years.

That's too bad, sorry about that. While I can't swear the icing on mine was the same as previous years, it definitely still hardened. The only difference I noticed was that they used a much wider tip for making the smile... which I can't exactly complain about!

Yeah, I did notice the wider smile. The eyes were a bit bigger too, and in conjunction with the icing they used, made the whole thing feel quite amateurish. They showed them on the news the other day and good god, they looked awful.
