So I can’t say I’m particularly happy about the government capitulating on the Digital Services Tax.
Meh. It was kind of a shitty tax to begin with. If that's what we had to give up to keep the orange orangutan happy and at the negotiation table, it's not a huge loss.

I would find it a relief if Canadians could read and post news links on FB again. It's insane that we can't post articles to refute the BS that the right-wing/MAGA twits make up and spread.

Yeah, same. It has the side-effect of silencing our voice at a time when we've really needed to be able to offer the opposite points of view of us as an affected party. That's very much a form of censorship even if that wasn't the intended result.

I was on the radio with my Dad around Father's Day and I wasn't even able to share the link to it to toot my own horn as FB flagged it as news.

but as I posted elsewhere, how long before trump finds something else to use as excuse?

If Edmonton had won the Stanley Cup he'd probably have used that as excuse saying it the NHL was biased against American teams.

Probably not long. Unfortunately, we're just not in a strong position when it comes to dealing with him, and he knows it. We're going to have to capitulate in some regards, at least while he's in power.

The Ford govt would have no problems with hiking the price of Hydro to the U.S, nor would the Bloc in Quebec.

Pity we can't say the same for smith and oil in Alberta.

Say what you will about Ford, but I'm glad he's my Premier. He has won over a great many liberal supporters, myself included. I honestly do believe he cares a great deal about Ontario and Canada. He's been our pit bull since this whole mess started and, all things considered, he's done pretty good.

The Online News Act and the Digital Services Tax Act are different pieces of legislation, and us capitulating on one isn’t going to affect the other, sorry.

ETA: You probably already know this, but it bears repeating at every opportunity: it wasn’t
the Canadian government that caused you to not be able to post news on FB, it was Meta itself, because they didn’t want to follow the legislation and pay, so they thought it was easier to just block news completely. Even though they agreed to pay in Australia, when they had previously enacted a similar piece of legislation. Canada was the canary in the coal mine, and Meta has now also refused to renew their payment agreements in Australia anymore, either. Same as with the DST, large tech companies feel they should be able to operate anywhere, without paying for anything.

Meh. It was kind of a shitty tax to begin with.

I am in favour of the DST in principle, so we will have to agree to disagree on this point. Hopefully the international community will at least double down on getting the global DST framework set up. The reason we ended up going with our own was because the global version was dragging on much too long.

Trouble is, we know “walk away” is one of Trump’s standard strategies, and now we’ve given up one of our bargaining chips with (seemingly) no concessions in return.

Besides, you know he’ll just find something else to be set off by, anyway. Oh wait, he already has, revisiting his rant against supply management on Sunday.

big tech (and that's extending it to include the likes microsoft) has long ducked taxes so it's about time it was made accountable.

And the thing is, this sets a precedent, as the Trump administration has already stated they'll go after other countries and their DST following Canada backing down on it.

Every time Hoekstra opens his mouth I dislike him more.

Oh, look, Hoekstra opened his mouth again, and the pattern holds.

Trump's 51st state comments can be taken as 'term of endearment': U.S. ambassador

I don't usually talk like this, but... Mr. Hoekstra, kindly shut your condescending pie-hole.

Don't worry, I'm sure I mean that with as much "endearment" as Trump does.

Just as an aside, I don't recall seeing the guess host Catherine Cullen before? I thought she did a really good job with the interview.

And just to finish off on happier note.... Happy Canada Day, all!

Wow. Well, Danielle Smith decided to put covid shots out of reach for most Albertans, but at least people in group homes, long-term care, and people like me (on disability) will still get them for free. Or at least until she decides to kick us off AISH next year when some government-paid "doctor" reassesses everyone without being familiar with our long-term medical histories.

She's a rabid anti-vaxxer who won't even make measles shots mandatory, thus putting children and anyone who's at-risk or somehow missed getting 2 shots in danger.

Then she blathers on about "there are still some other shots that are freely available."

Yeah... like you can substitute one shot for another.

Seriously, if anyone here is thinking of coming to Alberta, make sure you get your health care needs seen to in your own province. Alberta's government has gone insane.
