Personally, I was hoping it was going to be... me. Sure, I don't like the monarchy as an institution, but I could pretend to like them for $360K per year. But no, I guess they decided to go for "qualifications" and "experience" and "general suitability for the position" instead. Whatevs.

well she won't have the critism faced by Mary Simon for her lack of French but I wonder chosing some-one from Quebec was a counter move against the seperatist movement?

Don't we kind of have a tradition where we alternate between anglophone and francophone GGs? It was a francophone's "turn" this time. (Guess I wasn't eligible anyway, then. Oh well.)

Nothing about monarchical institutions makes Quebec separatists happy, regardless of who fills the role, so I wouldn’t count on much respite from the PQ, nor would I grant much credit to the idea the federal government chose Arbour for her potential appeal to Quebec. Nevertheless, the strength of her record and her character will make it difficult for separatists to gain traction in any attempt to denigrate her individually, regardless of their views on the office she holds.

Well, technically if you take a ferry from Newfoundland to St-Pierre et Miquelon, you can be in France. So we can kind of imagine what it might be like.
