The man in the dress

This poor guy not only has to see himself wearing a dress on TNG all the time but with that damned expression as well.

I think it would help a little bit if it at least looked like the normal uniform a little bit.

It might be worth pointing out, if this isn't already known, that he has that dim expression on his face because this occurs, IIRC, around the time Picard makes a ship-wide PA that they're going to try and to out-run the Q glowy ball thing. So that dim expression is the poor actor trying to convey "listening to the PA" even though he has a strained look on his face as if he's stuggling to hear it. Rather than just stopping and listening like pretty much everyone else in the scene does.

My wife picked me up some new sweatshirts at K-Mart last week, and they're a size too gob. I was walking around the house in one just before bed last night and I realized it's exactly the same length as the skant!

Not a great outfit for an action scene. I'd have hated to see security guys wrestling bad guys in that thing, as it rides up and reveals their panties.
Like the ones the professional wrestlers wear?

Meh, I don't watch that shit.

That wasn't the issue, but people don't seem to have any problems with most pro-wrestlers grappling with each other in only "panties."
:)

For all intents and purposes, the skant--for both males and females--is merely a very long tunic worn over matching trunks. Heck, in that regard, the skant could even be throwback to what some soldiers and sailors in bibilical times wore...

But there is also the issue of modesty in a society that's set centuries ahead of own. Values tend to change over time, and what might be considered inappropriate attire today, might be a big fashion trend for a future generation.

showing how enlightened Humans are by TNG's first season.
I.E. Transvestites enlisted in Starfleet?
(growling noises) And what could be wrong with that?
Ummm... nothing, please see my second post in this thread - #19. My only isuue is the skant is a crap costume design and looks silly on both men and women.

EDIT TO ADD: I don't know if you were trying to imply anything, but you don't know me, if you did, you'd know I was one of the most open-minded people you could meet. I certainly don't carry any prejudice of that nature.

He's clearly in a red command-track uniform. The materials they used for the uniforms throughout the series had difficulty taking to the dyes consistently well leading to bizarre stuff like this. Probably the most bizarre thing that occurred with this dye problem was the problem it had with blue dye for the Medical/Science uniforms. This is most notably evident in the "Remember Me" episode where Beverly walks with her mentor/friend down the hallway. Her mentor, also in the Science/Medicine track, has a uniform on that's teal, hell it's downright cyan. Compared to Beverly's standard blue uniform it's a pretty strong contrast and odd since this "teal" department color is never seen or assigned to anything specific and the visitor was supposed to be on the same department grouping Beverly was. I think the blue uniform was the one they had the most problems with when it came to the dye and I think the problem was mostly worked out by the time the final uniform designs were adopted in Season 4 (there's subtle difference between the S3 and S4 uniforms.)

Perhaps officers are given some leeway as to the precise shading of their uniform as long as it's not going to be mistaken for a significantly different color.

Whether it's teal or cyan or sky, it's blue, as opposed to red or gold or...

In-Universe that could be.

Out of universe it was because the dyes and materials sucked. ;)

Case closed concerning Colours.

One of the things I liked about this scene is the officer's gormless expression. It's like he hasn't the faintest idea what picard is saying

Yeah, the actor is trying too hard to "listen." Makes me think of a scene in a MST3K movie/episode where a character is doing the "strained face" thing to act as if he's looking for something (the Grim Reaper-character) Crow quips, "Look harder."

This guy makes me think something similar, "Listen harder." I mean there's standing and listening with a bit of a cocked neck with your eyes maybe looking to the left to show "thinking" then there's looking like you're severely constipated.

All I can think of when I see this is....

"Secret Asian Man..Secret Asian Man...
They've given you a scant dress and taken away your name...."
