I.E. Transvestites enlisted in Starfleet?
Well, men wear skirts today, so I'd imagine they will in the future too. Or maybe not, who knows?
That, I always assumed, was Gene Roddenberry's apology for the miniskirts in the original series.
And they disappeared shortly thereafter, proving that this was the 20th century.
Roddenberry was smoking something when he came up with this skant crap.
I liked the skant and it's not as crazy as many people seem to think. Men have worn skirts for most of human history and they still do today, why wouldn't they wear them or something similar (skant =/= skirt) in the future, especially in a society that includes not only all of humanity, but dozens of alien civilizations.
Many fans like to claim that Star Trek (and by extension its fans) is sparkling with tolerance and wisdom and that the world would be a better place if we would be a little more like the federation, but as soon as a random extra is depicted wearing something that looks like a miniskirt all you hear is "ridiculoustransvestiteskirtcrap!*snort*".
I'm not saying Picard should have worn a frilly dress every third episode, but an extra in the background in a skant? Come on!

I really like the idea behind the skant. It makes sense that in Roddenberry's idealistic future we're beyond the essentialist bullcrap of sneering at a man wearing something we consider to be coded feminine. But alas, it was never going to fly with a twentieth century audience.

Thoughts? Judging by his expression, the guy looks kind of confused. Maybe he spent a little too much time at a bar down at Farpoint the night before and dressed from his wife's closet by mistake. Hangovers can be a bitch ya know.
It's George Jetson. He, once again, accidentally hit the "female" button in the auto-dresser this morning rather than the "male" button. Oh, George!
I don't think there was anything wrong with the male skant uniform and I actually wished they had kept it (along with the female skant uniform). It probably rankled most current-day male sensibilities--and may have been why it was ultimately abandoned shortly after it was introduced--but I believe it was Roddenberry's honest attempt at depicting a future where males and females in Starfleet weren't always defined by what they wore (or to show what's good for the goose is good for the gander in showing some leg).
I've seen a fan-version of the male skant (it may have been at Spike's Star Trek Page) which featured trousers underneath, which might have worked as a compromise for those uncomfortable with the original version...

Skirt+Pant=the spork of fashion. Has the features of both,
does the job of neither.
Not too appealing, but I don't really have a problem with it. It's supposed to be unisex, like a t-shirt. Suitable for man or woman. It's not about how men can now wear female clothing in the future.
Dr. Pulaski DID wear the skant during her time, although with the underlying pants to go with it. And that was an okay look we never really saw again.
