The man in the dress

star_trek_man_in_skant.jpg

All I can think of when I see this is....

"Secret Asian Man..Secret Asian Man...
They've given you a scant dress and taken away your name...."
Fittingly enough, when I was little I always thought they were singing "She's an Asian man" :p

I always assumed and hoped that they did away with the skant when they realized its incompatibility with the transparent floors on the second level of engineering. Look up to check the warp core and ... AWKWARD!!!

"Ah, Ensign <secret asian man>, I see you're not wearing any skivves again today."

A skant, pretty much by definition, cannot reveal underwear to a "below looking up" person.

Imagine Picard on the bridge in a skant. Okay, but would he be any less in command?

I think Patrick Stewart could make it work, though he may have needed to tug at his uniform more often.

In-Universe that could be.

Out of universe it was because the dyes and materials sucked. ;)

Case closed concerning Colours.

One of the things I liked about this scene is the officer's gormless expression. It's like he hasn't the faintest idea what picard is saying

Yeah, the actor is trying too hard to "listen." Makes me think of a scene in a MST3K movie/episode where a character is doing the "strained face" thing to act as if he's looking for something (the Grim Reaper-character) Crow quips, "Look harder."

This guy makes me think something similar, "Listen harder." I mean there's standing and listening with a bit of a cocked neck with your eyes maybe looking to the left to show "thinking" then there's looking like you're severely constipated.

Soultaker!

Great episode.

While the women in the original series (especially Nichelle Nichols) thought of their "skants" as a sign of liberating feminism, the simple truth is that Roddenberry thought they would attract male viewers. He was right. In the sixties, no one wanted to see men in dresses. In the 80's, no one wanted to see men in dresses. In the 21st century, no one wants to see men in dresses. Yes, kilts and the like are worn in various parts of the world, but they are not "mini kilts". Regardless of how "progressive" you consider yourself to be, the simple truth is that men's legs are just not sexy. Women, in contrast, look very sexy in miniskirts/short dresses. It is enjoyable to see women's legs. It is NOT enjoyable to see men's legs. Men just look stupid in this sort of thing. Women do not. This will probably generate a few angry posts, but the simple fact is women in skimpy outfits draw viewers. Men in skimpy outfits, not so much.

The 70's and 90's were always my favorite decades! ;)

Ahhh the silliness of a hetrosexual male trying to assume everyone views the world in their own image.

I love the Skant because of how it brings out the homophobia of many Trek fans. It shows how humans have evolved and how many "fans" of the show don't quite understand that they are the ones being mocked.

But I suppose it's that type of attitude that has made Star Trek a an absolute disgrace when it comes to gay and trans issues. So sad when you look at the history of tolerance that Star Trek once had.

Homophobia? Are you serious?? Don't you think your taking that a little to far? As I see it. EVERY individual has their own preferences as to what they like. Some people like men in skants, others don't. I don't think it has to do with if you are gay or not. I know some gay people who would also say that a man in a skirt is silly. To me, do whatever you want; wear a skant, but I don't have to like looking at it, that's just dumb.

Welcome.

That's a skant, a crazy idea made by Roddenberry showing how enlightened Humans are by TNG's first season.

None of this is unusual..it wasn't a "dress" as such, but more along the lines of this idea:

No one seemed to think it was a good idea.

This is just opinion, there is no universal truth that men's legs aren't "sexy" cause mine are damn sexy...

If we did think our opinions were correct, we wouldn't have them.

That said, One a skant is a dress. Two there's nothing sexier than a guy with great legs showing them off ... by wearing shorts or a swimsuit.

Exactly..trust me its not just gay men who like men's legs:guffaw:. I get comments on my calves in shorts all the time from women.

Hmmm. If a heterosexual male thinks women are sexy, that makes them a homophobe. By extension, would that make a male homosexual who finds men sexy a heterophobe? Reminds me of those who are labelled a racist if they disagree with any viewpoint of Barak Obama. It is amazing how those who consider themselves to be "Progressives" immediately resort to name calling and accusation. Very sad.
