The Magicians makes Harry Potter look like it's for Children.

I really could have done without the seemingly pointless cumguzzling.

Otherwise I thought it was pretty good. Much improved over the first handful of episodes.

It certainly went somewhere. And then yeah, it went all over the place here. I thought the rapey fox guy was a setup for the villain they were hunting down next season, didn't expect it to play into the godseed power the way it did. I guess it was a good thing that she got her memories back after all, since she knew she may have the power to use the blade. And it makes sense since she was Jane Chatwin's wildcard this time around too. She was the difference.

But holy crap, that has to be one of the most annoying cliffhangers of all time. What a horrible time to cut to credits.

It was even more shocking than the dean getting his eyes ripped out, etc. I wonder why Martin hated his sister so much? And that mess about Julia? Seems like they introduced several new plot points at the last minute. And freeing Victoria was anticlimactic - thanks and so long!
I may have to read the book now.

Oh I agree with all of this. Maybe it made more sense in the books but it did feel like wtf was this Julia stuff for at the last minute? Maybe there should have been more build up to that.

I wonder if we will see Elliot's magic king baby in the next season, probably all grown up because of time shifting.

Was that Ryan Robbins?

Are you a good boy or a bad boy?

I watched the last episode, and the story finished halfway through a sentence. Quentin says "Julia!" and it just ends. However because I could, I looked at another download from a different piracy group, where there was a minute and half more to the story, where some serious shit went down.

Just to say this even more clearly.

If you watch this show via piracy, which of course, none of you do.

A flawed broken bad version of episode 13 was released that was missing the last 60 seconds, where Julia makes her deal.

If you saw the deal, you're fine, if you didn't see the deal, you have an incomplete/cropped story, so you'd best go looking for the missing section that you don't have.

I ploughed though The Magicians this weekend. Before eyeing this thread a week or two ago, I hadn't even heard of the show, but I gave it a whirl and am almost ashamed to admit how much I enjoyed it--waaay more than I feel like I should've. Total guilty pleasure.

Thanks so much for mentioning this Guy!

I don't want to advocate piracy or anything, but my tv has been on the fritz for a while now, so I've been downloading, but the cable bill is paid in full, so I'm getting the shows I paid for. I suppose technically it might be wrong, but I'll admit that I sure don't feel guilty, and skipping the commercials is great.

Burned me on this episode though.

Okay, so after watching the actual ending now, I'll admit that at least this felt a bit more like a proper ending/cliffhanger. Not sure I liked it any better, but it was sure superior to ending mid-scene.

Actually, now that I think about it more, I don't think I like it. Julia had a chance to kill the beast, but let him live? WTF? Screw the end of the world, she just wants revenge? Not cool. I guess she was feeling a little left out on the every-single-character-is-a-horrible-person train, so they made her an asshole too.

I like this show, but I'd imagine that I'd really like it if the characters were actual decent people.

The Fox murdered most of her new friends and raped her.

What exactly is the Beasts deal?

He wants to close the borders to Fillory.

Doesn't care about the multiverse or Earth.

And really now that his sister is dead... The Beast can probably retire from rampaging across worlds and bouncing within a time bubble, and be a three dimensional person finally.

The Fox is way more of a threat to Earth, considering all the effort it took to dig it's way into "our" dimension.

I binge watched this and liked it for the most part. Sort of "Harry Potter: University Years" though darker and with more emphasis on sex and the real world. Maybe not fair to compare it to Harry Potter but then they had to force in a damn Quidditch type game. Throw in a really attractive cast and lots of SFF easter eggs and it makes for a quite watchable show.

I think it only stumbled toward the end with everyone screwing each other over (oft literally) and a weak confrontation with the beast. I don't know if that's to be edgy for edginess sake but it seemed a bit out of character with what had come before. Maybe that's really what people are like and I don't want to accept it but either way I didn't care much for it.

Random Shit:
- I'm surprised this show didn't really generate much buzz.
- Can Syfy just let the f-word fly? With all the fuhs, fuh_ks and just outright fails this series had and I don't remember seeing or hearing one complaint (maybe because of above?).
- Speaking of that, with all the sex and nudity this would have been an epic premium cable show.
- The scene where
Penny loses his hands
looked like it was from an old FMV game (apologies to whoever said they worked on the FX above which looked good apart from that and whenever something vanished which looked to much like something being digitally erased).
- Quentin looks like a cross between James van der Beek and Seann William Scott
- The actor who plays Elliot looks really different in the behind-the-scenes interviews not unlike Felix in Orphan Black. They do a good job of putting on a more flamboyant character for the role.
- I loved that Margo took a
gun
to Fillory. I don't know how many times I've thought a character should do that in a fantasy/superhero movie. Her character was growing on me by the end, I found her really annoying initially but they found a sweet spot for her brand of bitchiness as the show went on.
- That cumguzzling looked NASTY, I was gagging.

Well, Julia was just severely traumatized after what happened with Reynard the Fox, and then found someone else who had been similarly traumatized who could help her get her revenge. I don't think it was the right thing to do, but from her perspective it was understandable.
The time loop reveal was interesting, and did make sense with everything we had seen.
I really enjoyed the finale. I did feel horrible for poor Julia.
I loved Eliot being the High King, I did not expect that.
The end was definitely a shocker.
I noticed that a big part of this show seemed to be people's fantasies being destroyed by a shitty reality. First we have Quentin idolizing Plover and Fillory, only to find out that Plover was a child molester and his victim had pretty much destroyed all of the good things in Fillory. Then we had Julia and the other Hedges trying to summon a benevolent goddess who could help them all, only for them to end up with a homicidal rapist psycho.
Overall my favorite characters were Margo and Eliot, they were great. Penny was cool too.
Some people were saying up thread that the characters were pretty shitty people, and while I'd say that is pretty much too, they were still interesting.
So how close to the book was this? Would reading the books give a good idea of where the show is going?

Yeah, censoring it is really kind of pointless at that point. I kind of wish they could just either not even have the words in there, or that the US networks could stop being pussies just put up a warnings and leave everything in uncensored. There is so much adult content in the show that I doubt a few "fucks" are really going upset the audience.
The popularity of HBO, Showtime, Netflix, Starz ect. are plenty of proof that the majority of people really aren't bothered by sex, nudity, violence and adult language.

People ain't bothered.

Parents want to protect their children.

Although, if the magicians is your three year olds favourite show, it's possible that your kid doesn't need protection.

If people don't like don't like it then they there are plenty of other things to watch, and if they don't want their kids to see it than they can either watch their kids better or put up one of those parental blocks on the TV.

Advertisers are assholes.

"We want to sell our products to good people. So only show our ads on good programs with good people, where nothing bad happens so that we can reach the broadest base of good people."

Just watched a bit about the monetization of youtube...
