The Lonely TREK

What Star Trek character, via the events of their life, is the most alone. Is it Kirk? He gave up love, family and that so called other life.

Was is Zeppy Chochran who lived many years alone until the energy cloud brought him love?

Is is Pike? He's lived out the rest of his life in a Cage; lured to love a woman, so that others could experience it.

Was it Spock? Estranged from his father, no real romantic love in his life as far as we know...

Data? Always searching for those like 'him'. He creates a daughter who dies...his mother can never know her real being...And then Data dies trying to save his father figure: Picard.

Ro Laren? She has bedded many men it seems, and yet was there, or is there, any love in her life? Or is she just doomed to live her life as a fighter.

Which character's journey through STAR TREK's vast universe has been the most lonely...

I'd say Janeway or Kirk.

Janeway was engaged when she was lost in the delta quadrant and her beau Mark married someone else thinking she was lost. Then she was in a totally new quadrant which was unchartered

I think Odo- he was alone and used for so long, and the couple times he found someone, he always kinda lost them... and I have a feeling even in the link, he's "alone" too.

It's Lazarus, stuck fighting a version of himself in some stupid cross-universe tunnel for all eternity. All of eternity is a long time.

Spock, imho. Never fitting in with either side. Never being understood or accepted by his parents. The one best friend he had got killed.

I would go with James Kirk, not only because command is a lonely place to be, but because Kirk always seemed to me to be a man who keeps his soft core very closely guarded and heavily armored. So while some of his loneliness is self-inflicted, he always seemed to me to be the loneliest of the Star Trek captains.

I definitely don't picture Pike as a guy who went home and hugged his parents or ever had a beer with a shipmate. The "loneliness of command" thing and weight of responsibility seemed very present in the writing and Hunter's performance. Then again, getting to spend the rest of one's life in illusory paradise with Vina doesn't seem so bad. ;)

All of the main characters in the Trek Franchise seem to be alone. Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway had to be lone wolves so to speak. It would have been too complicated to have spouses, children and other family members in every episode.

It seemed in ST that family members were a pain and an embarassment in an amusing way of course. Worf's and Deanna Troi's family comes to mind. Spock's family, Sarek, Sybok, and Amanda were interesting but would have complicated episodes and movies. Dr. McCoy has the apocryphal rebellious daughter, Joanna. Scotty has his nephew, Peter Preston. the list goes on.

Most of these folks ended up being killed orestranged so they wouldn't be making trouble for our heroes.

I never really thought of Picard as being alone or lonely. Yes, in GEN when he lost his family I got that feeling, but overall Picard had his family--that was his crew. Particularly Data. There seemed to be quite a closeness there. And then there is his closeness to Guinan as well.

Yeah, well, while they're not in every episode, the existence of Jennifer Sisko, Jake Sisko, and Kassidy Yates seem to make one of these Captains not quite like the other three.

All the above mentioned are all worthy candidates, however, I feel Quinn the sucidial Q in the Voyager espisode "Deathwish" gets my vote...

Resistance is Futile

Here are some of my picks for loneliest characters:

Worf- First he was the only Klingon in Starfleet, and rarely was around his own people up until the latter seasons of DS9. And his first love, K'Leyhr, was murdered. When he and Troi seemed like they might have a relationship, that never happened. Then Jadzia was murdered by Pah-Wraith possessed Dukat. And when Dax was put into Ezri, and they had a little fling, she eventually chose Julian. Overall, I think Worf is one of the most loneliest characters in Star Trek.

Data- For obvious reasons, Data was always somewhat of an outcast. The only Android in Starfleet, always trying to be human and alot of the time the subject of jokes.

Geordi-Probably the most stereotypical lonely person in Star Trek.

Kirk-Though he had many loves and alot of friends, he was always keeping them at a distance. He is the essence of what a romantic captain has always been in literature. Married to his ship and his career. He suffered many personal losses, such as his only son's murder, his best friend dieing, among many other things. Probably the most distant captain of all the main series captains.

Picard- Picard is lonely to the point of pity. He is constantly by himself when he is off duty

Geordi-Probably the most stereotypical lonely person in Star Trek.

I caught Nemesis on AMC last night. And you really see Geordi lonely at the end, after Data dies. He looks around and sees Troi and Riker holding eachother, and he doesn't have anyone to hold. And he gets ordered to do things while Picard goes of the his ready room. I really felt bad for him, as Data seems to be the only person in his life, and they seemed to have a "special" relationship. :)

So, I give post NEM Geordi my vote.

Honestly, the Geordi-Data friendship was one of my favories. It's really a shame that it had such a minimal role in the movies.

I always felt really bad for poor young Charlie.

I hadn't thought about charlie...good pick. I wonder what ever happened with him? He really got dealt a bad hand in life...can't really blame him for how he turned out...

Good pick Bones...
