The Little Stuff

How about, why Voyager's original XO (Cavit) was so clinically stupid that he figured it'd be a good idea to go running across the bridge right when the ship was being attacked?

What was he doing? Was he running toward the helm? Why?

We have absolutely no idea. There's no logical reason Cavit should have left his post, let alone go running across the bridge like that, in the middle of a hostile situation.

Out-of-universe, the only reason is of course because Cavit is 1) not a main character on the show, and 2) supposed to get quickly killed so Chakotay can take over. Guess this was the quickest way the writers could kill Cavit off: by making him an incompetent jackass.

^I wouldn't blame him if he hates chilled Tea, Tea like Coffee should only be served hot.

Unless it's a bottle of iced tea I completely agree. The first person who tried to make me a cup of tea chilled instead might end up finding it is their last...

And about Cavit. I originally thought for some reason he was rushing to his chair to sit down. That makes no sense I know, but it seems the only thing he could be doing. What better place to be when the ship is attacked then putting your feet up in the First Officer's chair, most comfortable place on the bridge supposedly? :p

Honestly, a more fitting death scene would have been for Paris to kill Cavit in a fight, guess they didn't want to get that edgy.

They could have lessened the edge by having him spare the human doctor, because he addressed Paris by name.

Well, I don't give him too much credit for that (did he have a name by the way?). Here are two schmoes giving Paris the back of their hand and I don't believe either one even knew him personally. I think we kind of knew what kind of character Paris was going to turn out to be, any Locarno association aside.

Now the doctor had to die for obvious reasons, as did Cavit, but he was considerably more boorish and dismissive towards Paris, so he was made to look as ridiculous as possible in his headlong rush towards his demise. Yes, I think that pretty well explains the seemingly inexplicable.

On screen, no. In fact, he's listed in the credits as "Human Doctor." The novelization of Caretaker named him Dr. Fitzgerald, which seems to have stuck for most other tie-ins as well.

Would have been more interesting if one of those guys lived and someone who was nice to Paris was killed.

(Disregarding the novelization name for now).

So, the EMH having trouble to choose a name thoughout the series wasn't without precedent! Too bad there wasn't a scene in the pilot with Janeway tapping her combadge "Janeway to human doctor" :)

"Janeway to human doctor" :)

Perhaps there were other nameless doctors of other species on the ship and she needed to specify.

Well, we do have a character named "Number One" from the Cage. So Human Doctor is in good company.

[the crew is on Voyager preparing to leave for the Briar Patch]

Human Doctor: I changed my mind. I wanna go back.

Janeway: After the fuss you made about getting left behind?

Human Doctor: Yeah, but that's when I thought I was the Doctor that stays on the starbase, and something is there, and it kills me. But now I'm thinking I'm the guy who gets killed by some monster five minutes after we start the mission.

Janeway: You're not gonna die on the mission, Doctor.

Human Doctor: I'm not? Then what's my last name?

Janeway: It's, uh, uh - -I don't know.

Human Doctor: Nobody knows. Do you know why? Because my character isn't important enough for a last name, because I'm gonna die five minutes in.

Janeway: Doctor, you have a last name.

Human Doctor: DO I? DO I? For all you know, I'm "Human Doctor"! Mommy... mommy...

Tom Paris: Are we there yet?

I always assumed Tom Paris's problem with the replicator in Caretaker was related to the fact that Voyager was a new ship and the replicator computers hadn't yet been personalized by the crew yet.

It sounds like a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy to me.

What, like Decker in TMP? ;)

Well, he was a fairly good looking guy as I recall. Maybe for kicks they could have given him a name like Chase Logan. Something to remember him by, poor bastard.
