The Legend of Korra: Book 4

Although I'd say it's highly likely that the bandit who stole the food from Opal and Kai was working for Kuvira, given how his acts played right into her agenda. I was surprised we didn't get a tag scene revealing that.
Could this be the same person even though the hair color is a little different?

By the way, we got a bit of an electric guitar riff when Meelo did his pose.

Which bugged me a bit, since I doubt electric guitars have been invented yet in the series' timeframe, and they'd probably be electric guzhengs or samisens or something instead.

But then, strictly speaking, they shouldn't have strawberry pie either, since strawberries originated in Western Europe.

You mean the guy on the right side of the image? The wardrobe and facial structure are similar, but the eye color is different too, and the hair looks longer in front. So unless that's an animation error, I'd say they're not the same guy.

They've used electric guitars before in the Avatar music. My favorite example is the episode, "Sokka's Master," when Aang was in that ridiculous armor... and couldn't move! :D
ETA: Meelo looks like a cross between Aang and Sokka...

Am I the only person waiting for the big reveal that Kuvira has been secretly in control of the bandits (or, at the very least, their leadership)? The bandits obviously fit well into her plans (as long as they stick to attacking rebellious towns). She could probably extend the tactic to Republic city next (using the chaos as an excuse to 'bring order' to that city).

On the contrary, multiple people have suggested much the same thing already, myself included.

Although I don't think she's responsible for all the bandits. I mean, let's remember, three years ago Zaheer brought down the monarchy and the kingdom fell into chaos. Obviously there would've been plenty of real bandits and raiders and the like, and that chaos is what's motivated Kuvira's quest for order and unity. But I certainly wouldn't put it past her to stage bandit attacks on those occasions where it helps her convince a given province to sign her contract.

This was a pretty good premier. I really like where we found everyone one after the time gap. I was pretty surprised with where Korra ended up, but it does fit her character. I wonder what will end up convincing her to come back to Republic City.
The stuff with the Kuvira and the Earth Kingdom is interesting. I wonder if we're leading up to a Earth Kingdome civil war?

I would have thought that Kuvira was a member of the Red Lotus.

Oh, hardly! The Red Lotus were anarchists. She's the diametric opposite of that, someone who believes in strict order and discipline. She's spent the past three years fighting the anarchy that befell the Earth Kingdom, and that's driven her to become more and more strict in her imposition of order, to the point of excess.

She's from the metal clan, this much has already been established and as far as we know, they have nothing to do with the White Lotus.

It's quite clear that she's just a typical military dictator in the making. Personally I like that the alternative to her being in charge is a foppish Prince who'll likely end up either running the kingdom into the ground for good, or become an empty figurehead like the old Earth King. Makes it kind of hard to disagree with her on at least a basic level.

My only issue with Kuvira is that I think they should have done more to introduce her character last season than her very brief introduction. With the time jump it just feels like she kind of came out of nowhere, from being a random member of the Metal Clan to suddenly leading a vast army that's (almost forcibly) bringing order to the fractured Earth Kingdom. I'm sure they'll explain how she made that jump as the season progresses, but for now it's just really weird.

Saw it last night. I really enjoyed it. And Prince Wu is such a twit. Kubota is Sozin, Earth Kingdom edition and Korra... she must've decided to fight things on her own terms.

^Who's Kubota? Do you mean Kuvira?

And Korra's pretty clearly given up the fight, except in the literal sense.

Darned tablet... didn't catch it. And Korra might seem down but to me it seems that she isn't out. But for over two years, she dealt with people giving her the message that things would be okay, that she'd go back to normal, blah blah blah. Finally, once she was out of the chair and had her wits back, she tired of those messages. "It's never going to be the same again. I was almost killed and I can't take being stuck like this down here in the South Pole or in Republic City as an object of pity. I'm disappearing for a while." She needs to solve what's happened on her own terms or she won't move forward.

^I think it's more that she's given up and lost faith in herself. She's always defined herself by her power and strength, and she's been stripped of that. She failed (she believes) to defeat Zaheer on her own and needed help from others to prevail and survive. Jinora and the airbenders have taken over her job for her, and Tenzin and others have been reassuring her that the world is in safe hands without her, which just makes her feel she isn't needed anymore. Her whole identity since she was four years old has been defined by being the Avatar, and if the Avatar is irrelevant, she feels she no longer has a purpose, a goal. So she's adrift emotionally.

I'm just not certain she's given up so much as she's had a lot of stuff thrown at her and she's having to sort through it. The Avatar isn't irrelevant, and I'm sure Katara has likely reminded her of that. It sounds like everyone has reminded her of that. But for a while, I'm sure she worried she'd never again be who she was. But she slowly regained her ability to walk and bend. It's hard to be at that point and everyone telling you platitudes that you've heard a thousand times. You struggle and watch other people take over things for you until you're well enough to come back. But you come to a standstill. You worry you'll never again be what you were, however you came to be that way. It's at that point that you have a crisis... of faith, as best I can say it. You ask, "what now?" And you ponder your next move and whether or not you want those same people around you.

I might be going to Comic Con in NYC on Thursday where there is a Korra panel.
