The Legend of Korra: Book 4

Oh if only they could have shown Korra and Asami kiss in the final scene.

I think it's to the show runners' immense credit they didn't even *need* to show it. In some ways I think it's even better they they did it this way, even if it was largely out of necessity. It felt a lot more like a real, grown-up relationship where so much usually goes unsaid (a challenge for any writer) because it's unnecessary, than the angsty clichéd teen drama that was the "Mako triangle".

I wish Zuko, Izumi, Desna, and Eska could have appeared at the wedding of Varrick and Zhu Li. Everyone else was in attendance for the heroes of Republic City.

That would be more for the fan's benefit than anything. Logically there's no reason for them to have been there, particularly when they have a nation and a tribe to run, respectively. More than likely they're busy organizing humanitarian aid for the Earth Kingdom/Empire/Republic.....whatever.

I'd be interested to go back and re-watch the last two seasons and see the moments I may have missed. I think the first time the possibility even occurred to me was during the 3rd season finale after Korra had been poisoned and their interaction seemed to shift into a more tender gear.

I had noticed prior to that that Assami part of the group dynamic had changed from being just "the other woman" to something more of a "Korra centric" friendship. I guess I just assumed that was an artefact of them (thankfully) ditching the love triangle drama and giving Asami some space to become more of a character in her own right.

I'm glad to see the creators officially confirm the relationship.

Although, as I'm seeing on other boards, it hasn't prevented some people from insisting that the relationship came out of nowhere and was tacked on as mere fanservice. :( Bryan & Mike took away their ability to claim the romance wasn't there at all, so they've moved on to rejecting its validity as a storytelling choice.

AvatarSpirit?

NeoGAF's and Reddit's Korra community have really been embracing the ending. I don't know of any other major places with a Korra community.

^I was thinking of the discussion on Tor.com, which I'd just come from before posting. I'm sure there are other places too. I did glance at Avatar Spirit's forum and saw a poll from a socially conservative poster asking if people thought the ending had gone too far, but I can't find it now -- maybe it got too heated?

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that the fan community has been mostly supportive, though I'm certainly not surprised.

Most of my friends are for Korrasami, but at least one of my friends refuses to accept it. Even after I sent her Vanity Fair's article on the creator confirmation yesterday.

I had no idea that Book 3 was already out on Blu-Ray! I just found it at Target while finishing up some Christmas shopping.

I am now going to watch it while I wrap things!

AvatarSpirit is just nuts. I don't know how, but it ended up the conservative community for Korra. The homophobes (not in a malicious way, but a "it makes me feel weird/is a sin" kind of way) outnumber the normal people and the mods are in on it.

I left the board rather abruptly about an hour after reviewing 4x07 but now I'm back. Since I wasn't posting, I saved up the last 6 episodes and binge-watched them in December. I thought it would be great to sit down to 2 hours of Korra but the experience wasn't anything special. Maybe it was my excitement or maybe it was the quality of the episodes or a combination of both. So anyway, here's what I thought…

  • I was disappointed to see that one of the episodes was going to be a clip show but as I watched, I actually liked it and months later, this one stands out the most. The phone conversation with the previous baddies was hilarious. The show runners did a great job at cobbling something together.

  • As with Book 3, this one had too much action. I wasn't impressed with the big mecha battle.

  • Poor Kuvira. She really ruined her life didn't she? She's a young woman barely 20 and now she'll spend the rest of her life in prison.

  • Does Korra have a last name? I never thought of that.

  • I've talked extensively about the end of the avatar cycle over the years and I thought that perhaps they'd go this route but they didn't. Instead we got a very anti-climactic ending where life just goes on. Yes, there's Korrasami, but I'll talk more about that in a bit. Back on point, one idea I had that would have been nice for Book 2 was that maybe Korra's spirit didn't want to be the avatar anymore after 10,000 years, so it used the harmonic convergeance as an exit. Korra could have lost Raava who would then merge with someone else, like Asami who would then become the next avatar. Korra would have been distraught and beyond angry and depressed over such a loss and it would be odd to have such a twist for the show's central character but it would have made for some good storytelling. A new avatar cycle and a new person continuing on as the avatar. Just an idea. What could they have done with the avatar cycle with the events in Book 4? I don't know. I'll have to leave it at that for now.

  • Korrasami. I liked it. I didn't think it was a big deal, then I went online and was surprised at how this one thing took over all talk of Korra for days and weeks afterward. It certainly hit a nerve with people.

  • With the show over, I finally purchased Avatar: The Last Airbender on DVD and Korra on blu-ray. Now I have everything including the extras and the webisodes. I did have trouble with the blu-rays though. Some of the discs wouldn't load but with enough fiddling around, I got them to work. Too much memory for my player perhaps? I don't know. One or two of the cases were poorly made as well but that's not a big deal.

  • I also got the big hardcover art books. They don't show anything new or overly interesting aside from concept to execution but they're good keepsakes if you're a dedicated fan. The Art of Book Four comes out in mid September.

Oh yeah, and for those who wanted to see a kiss...

And here's a YouTube clip.

I still say the relationship was tastefully done. I think that's what some people forget, that love generally starts as friendship.

The longer that Korra is off the air, the more I really want to see another Avatar series. This is such a unique world that has endless stories to be told.
