The Legend of Korra: Book 4

Then go ahead and dive in.. it's an awesome anime (and i'm not much of an Anime watcher but it's one of the few i've seen completely).

I gather the movies, at least the recent trilogy, aren't that well-regarded. Indeed, one thing that makes me hesitate about seeing Evangelion is the uncertainty about viewing order and what to include.

I've spent the past couple of days rewatching all my DVRed episodes of Book 3 (recorded from Nickelodeon initially and Nicktoons for the later ones), and I'll do the same with Book 4 tomorrow and Friday before the last four episodes air on Nicktoons Friday night. I noticed a couple of things about Book 3.

One, Korra really airbends a lot in that book. She seems to rely on airbending by default a lot of the time, even when other forms of bending would work -- for instance, when the airship crashes in the desert, she clears the sand out of the engine room with airbending rather than sandbending. I suppose maybe it's because her focus was on rebuilding the Air Nation, but I wouldn't have minded more variation in her bending styles.

And two, I hadn't realized that Kuvira showed up in two Zaofu episodes before she was named in episode 12. She was a nonspeaking background figure in "The Metal Clan," appearing as one of the dancers in the scene where Suyin was introduced, and her picture also appeared in a newspaper in that episode (at least according to the Avatar Wiki -- I didn't notice her there). And she was in several scenes of "The Terror Within," having a few lines of dialogue, though she wasn't named there.

Oh, and there was a bit in the finale where Korra was in the Avatar State, breaking free of her chains, where it looked like she used lavabending to direct Ghazan's lava back at him. But she may have just been airbending to force it toward him.

There's a part of me that wishes the Avatar universe was written by JRR Tolkein...just because I'd love to know every tiny little detail about the history of everything! We learned in Season 2 that the Avatar has been around for 10,000 years. That's a lot of time that we're missing! Who was the second Avatar? Did they even know what the Avatar was? How much direct influence did Raava have, and how did knowledge of her disappear from the Avatar world? You'd think that would be important.

We saw little snippets of the more recent past Avatars. We know Roku's role in starting the 100 Year War. We know a bit about Kyoshi.

The whole universe is so rich and complex. I'd love to see the mythology fleshed out.

^You mean the ones who preceded Yangchen, right? It was Earth Guy, Fire Guy, Yangchen, Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku, Aang, Korra.

I'd love to have names for the earth and fire Avatars who immediately preceded Yangchen. They've appeared multiple times in the background for us to get clear screenshots.

Anyone else think it interesting that only of the Avatars we see in these visions appear older (as they presumably were near the time of their death) while others like Aang (who lived to his mid 70's not counting the century in the iceberg), Kyoshi (who supposedly lived over 200 years) and Wan (whom we saw die as an older man) all appear as they did in their prime?

And yeah, I think I mentioned this back when the Wan flashback episodes aired, but I think the story of the second Avatar could be just as interesting as Wan's. This is the Avatar (probably an Air Nomad) that had no outside support, no one looking for them to be reincarnated, would have had to have discovered his/her true nature and abilities on their own. Probably even put in place the systems to find and train their subsequent incarnations.

I was thinking that it's showing them at the defining moments of their lives, but that doesn't work for Aang unless he has a more defining moment than ending the 100 years war later in life.

I suppose it could be fairly arbitrary. While we know Roku looked about that old when he died, most of the others are unknowns in that we have no idea how long they lived. For all we know the ones that look old could have lived to look *much* older than when we see them.

Satisfying finale. That Korra X Asami though. :D

Ranking the seasons in terms of enjoyment:

Season 2

Season 3

Season 1

Season 4

You know for a minute there, I didn't think they'd follow through with the KorrAsami thing, but I'm glad they actually went there...or at least as close to "there" as a cartoon on Nickelodeon could possibly get away with, even in this day and age. Still very proud of them for going for it. ;)

I'm not ashamed to admit that through that last scene I was saying to myself "And now hold hands...hold hands....come on ho-...THEY HELD HANDS!!!" :D

A little sad the show's over and it's a shame the creators had such a rough ride of it (I gather they were less than thrilled about having to do a clip show at the 11th hour) but here's hoping they can revisit this world and it's characters later on down the line...preferably as far from Nickelodeon as possible.

^Nick don't seem all that interested in the IP, I'm sure they'd sell if say the likes of Netflix, Disney or Dreamworks come a'knocking.

I really enjoyed the finale. Nothing was grievously wrong with it.

I'd rank the books as follows.

3
4
2
1

2 only beats 1 because of Wan.

I think Nick doesn't understand the franchise, but I also feel that they are smart enough to never let it go.
