The least disliked episode of the franchise - Final Showdown

Though I can't believe that our final selection comes down to these two episodes. Of the two I prefer In the Pale Moonlight.
I can't think why In the Pale Moonlight being in the final 2 would be a surprise to anyone. It would have only been a surprise if it weren't.

United being there, however, is surprising.

Yeah, Pseudo, "In the Pale Moonlight" really isn't remotely surprising. It's one of the most highly-acclaimed episodes in the franchise.

Whether or not I happen to like it (granted, I love it) this doesn't surprise me in the least.

Of the two, yes, there's a pretty decent case to be made for In the pale Moonlight being in the top five or ten episodes. But, it doesn't spring to my mind when people talk about the best episode of the franchise.

The Best of Both Worlds (I) - 0
In The Pale Moonlight - 0
United - 2

United. It's an excellent episode, but it's just not in the same league as the other two. I'm actually amazed that it's stayed in so long as what I feel are superior episodes have fallen before it. Is United really better than Mirror, Mirror or City on the Edge of Forever? Really?

Not even close.

Moonlight - Hard choice, but I find the conflict that brings races together for the founding of the Federation a bit more interesting.

In The Pale Moonlight - 5
United - 3

I think united has benifited from not being seen as a threat so people haven't voted it off.

I voted for ITPM, I like the episode definitely one of the best of DS9, but it would make my bile rise to have an episode from Days of Our Lives in Space come out on top.

How can people vote for Green when Blue is obviouslly a better color. It should be between Blue and Red.

Just goes to show the power of the fourth season across fandom, eh, Shran? Sure, there are still a lot of folks out there who unabashadly despise the show but that fourth season really brought 'em back in droves.

I'm a bit surprised too though. I expected "United" to make it to the showdown; after all, didn't it win that 'Save My' contest toward the beginning of the year? I didn't quite expect it to win though.

Very impressive, especially since "In the Pale Moonlight" appeared nigh-untouchable for the majority of this battle.

 United definitely isn't my winner but then that's how these things have pretty much gone since I started voting in this thing! It's been a fun ride though, unexpected results all the way along.

Well, since this is officially not the Best Trek contest, but the contest of which episode upsets people the least, maybe it's not that surprising. Though I would have expected someone to take it down just because of the general ENT-hate.

It's the first one that springs to my mind when people talk about the best episode of the franchise. It's also the only one I've seen called "the best Star Trek episode" by anyone who isn't referring to just TOS by "Star Trek".

Man, this has got me all caught-up in wishing ENT had a fifth season again. Thinking about how cool it would have been to see Shran as a permanent character and all that.

Curse this contest! It's got me all misty-eyed!

Yes United winning is an artifact of the voting system. By my count a max of 14 people voted in one round, it would be interesting to see which would win United or In The Pale Moonlight on a straight vote of those 14 people.

Even though I think DS9 is easily the weakest series of the franchise I tried to compare each episode on individual merit. Given that I think both United and In the Pale Moonlight are fine episodes I used my general dislike of DS9 as a deciding point.

The Days of Our Lives in Space comment is meant to show that I think DS9 has stories that develop far too slowly.

DS9 is my favorite show... ever. But I can still understand how some might find its storylines too slow-moving. Obviously I disagree or I'd be hard-pressed to call it my favorite show but it is one element I can pretty easily grasp.

Me, I love the slow-moving storylines and I don't find them positively glacial in speed like, say, Stargate Universe.

I wouldn't use "slow-moving" as a stick to beat DS9. I'm sure general viewers find all Star Trek to be that compared to most TV right now. Shows are still that way when they need to be, but disguise it with jerky camera movements during mundane scenes, where two characters really have to talk about something dull and uninteresting. The only time that ever really happened on Trek, usually involved the ship/station/whatever being under attack. The latest gimick is just to throw lens-flares in there to disorientate.

I've seen the same thing said about Enterprise. TOS always wrapped a morality play into one episode. Some people prefer that. DS9 had some long arcs. Enterprise season 3 was one long arc and season 4 had a lot of 2 and part arcs. I enjoy them. Not everyone does.
