The least disliked episode of Star Trek - Final Part

Glad that someone else thinks City is overrated. I am into love stories, if they're convincing... None of Kirk's ever really were, except Carol Marcus. City does better than most of them since Edith is someone I could see him falling for (unlike, say, Rayna), but it happens far too quickly.

But it's the main time travel plot that really doesn't make too much sense. Like I said before, it's based on overestimation of individual's role in history, and an overestimation of USA's role in WW2.

While I think it's an okay episode (and I like the "Guardian Of Forever" concept) - I've honestly never understood what a lot of fans see as so outstanding in this episode. Plus - given what I've read and know of the period from family members who lived through it - after Pearl Harbor - I seriously doubt Edith Keeler and her movement could/wpuld of delayed the U.S. entry into WWII. Hell, Rosevelt wanted to enter the war earlier, but knew the idea was not popular with the U.S. electorate at the time.

City is the best Star Trek story ever, by miles, in any of the TV series or movies. Yeah, it's kind of funny that forty years of striving and they've never surpassed the first season of the original series for drama.

*Cough* Far Beyond The Stars.

Hmm... somehow City lost a point, so I've restored it. And I assume both Dennis and Captain M meant to vote for Errand of Mercy, so I've fixed that as well.

My vote - The City on the Edge of Forever, for reasons already stated. As a side note, even after Pearl Harbor, U.S. public opinion was still unsure about war with Germany. They didn't support it until after Hitler declared war on the U.S. Once that happened, I doubt Keeler would have been very successful.

Nope, nowhere near. That is my favorite episode of DS9, though.

You know - I know that stuff, but I actually don't give a fuck about it in this context. I'm watching a show about time-travelers in a spaceship.

I'll take out Errand of Mercy then. It's good but simply the weakest of the four left. It's difficult even to choose between the other three now...they're all on another level.

Mirror, Mirror - the weakest of the episodes left IMO. I never have been a fan of the mirror universe and I can't vote against the introduction of Sarek or the IMO best episode of Trek... so Mirror, Mirror it is.

What about the love story between Kirk and Carol Marcus was convincing? We never got to see their love story. I always thought Carol was just a plot device to make the situation with Genesis even more urgent and personal for Kirk - and of course, to introduce David and have someone to kill off that has some kind of impact in ST III (which they failed in IMO).

The City on the Edge of Forever - ditto.

Exactly that. It was convincing that he had a relationship with someone 20+ years ago, rather than falling madly in love in the space of a day or two. And for once his ex wasn't a 'woman scorned' still smitten with him and resentful at him for dumping her (so we'd seen how irresistible Kirk is), instead it was a case of them parting ways because they wanted different things. Which makes Carol a more believable independent woman of 23rd century, rather than the desperate-for-love 60s women of TOS.

"City" is great and all, but I prefer Star Trek when it's in the future and in space.

Stories that still work well when you don't know the people in them before the story's opening are simply better stories. City works better if you know Kirk and Spock and McCoy, but it would be almost as good as an episode of an anthology like The Outer Limits or The Twilight Zone.

The other two lean heavily on established fondness for the characters and setting - as, for that matter, does "Far Beyond The Stars." They're just not as well written, and not nearly as good.

To see a so-so bit of soap like "Journey" make it this far in the voting is demonstrative of how much Trek relies on familiarity and repetition for its hard-core appeal.

Aren't familiarity & repetition part of the idea of an episodic television series with recurring characters? I certainly get what you're saying and even tend to agree with it where theatrical films are concerned. In this type of TV show though, it seems like playing off of familiarity with previously well developed characters is a bonus. No? Just my humble opinion.

Anyway...

This was really tough as I love CotEoF. However, I am in agreement with other posters who pointed out their affinity for shows that take place on the ship/in space.

Dennis is probably right, but maybe it is the fondness for the characters that has kept interest in Trek going for all these years?

Then again, Mirror, Mirror is one of the most reliant on knowing the characters...

One could argue that 90% of the appeal of the Star Trek movies is the characters.

I prefer Mirror, Mirror to Journey to Babel (and even City). An outstandingly entertaining episode. Certainly likable enough to win this game, IMO.
