The fleet is investigating a massive plot hole that threatens to engulf the Alpha quadrant.

That was my first thought, but then it seems only Uhura picked up that distress call.
Whatever it was, the writers didn't think it was significant enough to mention again: Nero just picked a good time to strike it seems.
The Laurentian System was simply the means of making the Enterprise the "only ship in range," as is the requirement of every Trek movie. A cliche that Abrams has apparentally decided to continue.
It was more so all the cadets had to go off on the rescue mission rather than because the Enterprise was "the only ship." Especially since it wasn't the only ship...there were 8.
