The Laurentian System: So...what's up there?

...Okay, we've no idea what had all those vessels engaged there while Nero committed his atrocities. What crisis would you see Fleet being called upon en masse to deal with there? And where would you put this region....?

In my head, this is where the Klingon ships were destroyed, and the fleet was offering aid.

It is where they gathered all the Star Trek fans of the 23rd century for execution.

It is said that there was a disturbance in the space time continuum, as if millions of voices whined about canon and were suddenly silenced.

That was my first thought, but then it seems only Uhura picked up that distress call.

Whatever it was, the writers didn't think it was significant enough to mention again: Nero just picked a good time to strike it seems.

Yeah, Pike nor Spock knew about the distress call. Seems like there would have been some scuttlebutt about the majority of the fleet deploying there.

The Laurentian System was simply the means of making the Enterprise the "only ship in range," as is the requirement of every Trek movie. A cliche that Abrams has apparentally decided to continue.

It was more so all the cadets had to go off on the rescue mission rather than because the Enterprise was "the only ship." Especially since it wasn't the only ship...there were 8.
