The Last TOS Episode, Turnabout Intruder...Where Is Uhura?

I recall several TOS actors stated that towards the end of shooting the 3rd season that the morale of cast and crew was really low. Everyone was pretty sure that the show would be canceled. Nichelle made a comment that "We were just marking time." I wonder if she just said "The Hell with it. I'm calling in sick."

Looking at Star Trek: The Inside Story, Turnabout Intruder was the only episode shot in 1969, so if Nichols had been offered a gig to start the first week of January, then knowing that the series was cancelled it would make sense for her to take it, unless she was under contract to Paramount and they obliged to do the last week of Trek. Speculating, but...

It's almost certainly the case that they had simply satisfied her contract before that episode and so didn't call her in to save money. Perhaps someone will find a memo about it digging around in the UCLA archives someday.

Nichols was a day player by that point, and not under an exclusive contract.

Memory Alpha says she had a singing engagement. For those who have the script handy, is Uhura in it?

And "Savage Curtain" would be the "antepenultimate" episode if we're into vocab words this evening.

My memory is that the Communications Officer in 'Turnabout Intruder' had more than a few lines. More than Uhura often got. I think she was a blond and she was in another episode too.
So my guess is that they had intended Uhura to be in it.

Don't start...;)

It also depends whether we are talking production order or screening order which may be the same this late into the season.
So I'm poking my tongue out at the person who said Uhura wasn't in the last 3 episodes. If they said that. :p ;)

The Communications officer in "Turnabout Intruder" is the same actress Barbara Baldavin who played Angela Martine (the bride to be) in "Balance of Terror" and she was also in "Shore Leave"

She was also the wife of casting director Joe D'Agosta (atlhough I'd have to check to see if he got that credit for TI)

I loved the way this happened in TOS. It was nice to see familiar faces from time to time (although ISTR her screen name hopped around a few different alternatives, assuming she was in fact playing the same character each time).

Is there a list anywhere of the episodes of TOS which do, in fact, include all the 'main' characters? I guess there aren't many that include both Sulu and Chekov, and probably even less featuring both of them and Uhura as well. I wouldn't be surprised if Scotty was in a lot of episodes though, he was probably the most used of all the "second tier" regulars.

In "Shore Leave", Baldavin is also called "Angela" but is given the last name "Teller". Also as odd, in TI she is referred to as "Lieutenant Lisa". "Lisa" is an existing spanish surname, but is very rare, it is far more common as a first name.

Who Mourns for Adonais comes pretty close to using the entire extended cast. It had Scotty, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Leslie, Hadley, Lemli and Kyle. Only Nurse Chapel was missing.

I thought I said that!! :)

Same character. She remarried frequently.

The original script for Shore Leave listed the female crew member as Teller, but they changed it when Barbara Baldavin took the role but apparently Shatner forgot and the line was left in!

Not sure but I do know that she was the casting directors wife (Joe D'Agosta) so when they needed someone; she was available on short notice.

According to imdb, Barbara Baldavin went into casting herself after her acting career. That can't be a coincidence.

JANICE: Ohh! I've lost to the captain. I've lost to James Kirk! I want you dead! I want you dead! I want you dead! Oh, I'm never going to be the captain. Never. Kill him.

[... Batshit Crazy, she goes to Coleman's arms to weep]

COLEMAN: You are ... you are as I loved you.

That line always gets a laugh out of me - this episode is so bad, it's good!

If I'm not mistaken, she was also the wife of casting director Joe D'Agosta.
